I've been meaning to reply with a pic earlier but got stuck with routine.. Adios

----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

My 2009 FZ is over 40k mark & not a single engine component ever worked upon or replaced. Its still bone stock in every way & does absolutely fine on all fronts with routine maintenance. Performance is more or less at par with present gen FZ & going over 110 kmph isn't much of an uphill task. No engine overheating even after riding continuously for over 200 kms (at cruising speeds of 80).

Only things i remember replacing so far is Clutch plates, both tyres, con set, fork oil & seals, wheel bearings, chain & sprocket set.(apart from usual air/oil filters, disk pads, drum brakes sets. etc) Most of the above replacements were at 25k, done only as a safety check for my Mumbai - Leh ride even though the bike wasn't calling out for those replacements. My official yamaha mechanic says the bike in present situation is good to cross 50k kms without needing replacements.

The above info is just my experience on a well built bike by Yamaha which we all own. Coming to your question of engine overhauling, i inquired the same with my Mechanic after my leh ride & he assured there is no need up until atleast 1 lakh kms (bit too stretched IMHO) but i can assure the engine is good to go untouched for a minimum of 50k kms unless you miss out on regular maintenance.

Cheers..

• Chain Sprocket problem on Yamaha FZ 16

Hello,

I am seriously in-need of help regarding the chain sprocket problem on my FZ. The bike is one year and six months old and has run 13400 kms. From past few days the bike's chain was making some noise, it was loose and was hitting the chain guard. As i always prefer the authorized Yamaha service, I took it to Sprint Yamaha Bangalore, where my bike gets serviced every time. The bike was inspected and the service adviser told me that the Chain Sprocket needs to be replaced along with few bearings which would cost me around Rs 1500/- . I was shocked as the Sprocket on other bikes are replaced after 25k kilometers, and also one of my friend got it replaced after using the bike for 24k kms on his FZ-S. Is it a rip off? Can the part be damaged for such a short time as in my case?

A local mechanic told advised me not to replace them and he asked me to get the chain cleaned, lubricated and aligned properly and get it replaced only if the problem persists. I seriously don't know whom to trust. So should I get it done at the authorized workshop as suggested of shall i listen to the local mechanic?

And the last thing, Can i use kerosene to clean the chain and then use gear oil ( new or used one) to lubricate it weekly, as suggested by the local mechanic in order to keep the chain in healthy condition?

I am having a wonderful experience with the bike and i am in need of your valuable advice to keep going on so!

Thank you for your time

Both were not taken care like baby but were not abused much.

I searched on the internet and found few others had similar problems.

If periodic service and proper care is taken.. you don't have to open up modern engines at all until close to 1 lakh kms. Yammies have been well built this way. Besides the consumables no major overhauling is required.

Does fork oil need to be changed at 10000kms? Along with oil seals? And my friend changed his "ball racers" on his fz at 10k interval.well, what are those and do those need a change?

Today I felt like I had to press and hold the electric starter longer for ignition and once, the red self-check light also lit up though I hadnt touched the fuse on/off red switch. Need some help.

The rear brake pedal seems to be vibrating a bit when pressed. Need to replace or just clean? How do I find out if replacement is necessary or not?

Ok i got mine 7 months back for 2700 from this authorised Dunlop distributor in Andheri. I jus spoke with him and the current price is 2900 and he only has 2 tyres available. Other places, its retailing for 3200-3400, so i beleive this is the best price u can get. You can try other places as well and Pm me if you want to know more. Ride safe..!!

its not like you ride for 50k some kms and just take the bike to get overhauled..
its a continuous process of maintenance from day one till you ride the bike.. all the parts have their own life span.. some say at around 30k, the engine parts should be looked into and checked for any damage (like piston sings etc etc..) and so on..
Thaks for replying
I agree that the engine life depends on many factors but still quality and technology plays some role right.?
How can such reputed machine which is known for quality breakdown while 125cc ybx is holding strong while both of them were having almost same care and treatment.?

Hope my abused fz will keep rolling on even with those large tyres.
I fell yamaha engines consume more fuel but can take more abuse.
Ybx is currently providing 40 kmpl and fz around 30 with with 140/70 tyre on yhe rear.

No need to change the fork oil so quick.
You can change at 14k-15k kms. For Fz each fork carries 470ml of fork oil. However it is recommended to put 10-20 ml lesser. So 450ml will be fine in each fork.
And coming to Oil seals, Yes its safe to replace them when you change the fork oil because they might be worn around 19-20k kms (happened with me when i only changed the fork oil and did not replace the oil seals and they were messed in 700-800 kms after i changed the fork oil, and again i had to replace them which was quite heavy on my pocket, so its better to change the oil seals when you change the fork oil itself even if the oil seals are not worn, but the oil seal damage depends mostly on the way you ride, on the type of roads etc)
Coming to ball racers, those are part of Handle cone set and again their damage depends on the way we ride. Their damage is quick when one rides a lot through potholes/speed breakers much & their damage is extreme when one performs stunts (stoppies/wheelies) Generally with a decent rider, those last up to 18-20k kms.
Coming to the rear brake pedal, get it cleaned, it might be loosened.

Hi Speedy,
The ball racers are nothing but races for ball bearing which goes inside the steering column (cone). There are 2 of them, top & bottom.
There is no thumb rule. If you feel tightness or roughness in steering you will need to replace those. I replaced it twice. I had posted the photos of my old bearings with races somewhere in this thread.
No need t change the fork oil if you don't feel any issue, but refer the schedule. While changing the fork oil invariably the oil seals need to be replaced.
If the warning/error light is on continuously you can show it to SVC. I also experienced it once but nothing after that.
To check the wear on the rear drum, refer manual.

I would like to share my experience with Kamala Yamaha, Borivli. Before coming to Bangalore, I changed the clutch & accelerator cables, replaced fork oil, replaced oil seals. Even I told them that I would be riding to Bangalore next week.
After coming to Bangalore within 3 months the front fork oil seals burst, had to replace the oil as well. During this period I was feeling the front suspensions stiff, but thought it may be alright.
Replaced the clutch cable again.
If you are getting your motorcycle serviced there, make sure you know the quality of service. I have reported this to Yamaha as well.

I serviced my motorcycle at Monarch Yamaha, Pune, YFS Malad Mumbai, Kamala Yamaha Borivli Mumbai & Sprint Yamaha, Hosur Road, Bangalore, out of which Monarch & Sprint (Costly) I found to be more reliable.
I will not discourage people from getting their motorcycles serviced at Kamala Yamaha, Borivli but when you say Service, you should get what you pay for.

Hi, you can do one thing, get it laminated by any local mobile shop. The lamination will protect it from moisture and provide a clear view.
I had suggested the same to another guy few months back.

Thanks abhijitkn and touseef ahmed mohammed. Need to know about the starter issue. Sometimes there is simply no feedback from the thumb starter when it is pressed. It started happening since yesterday. But it starts after 3-4 seconds if i keep it pressed like that. Its kinda irritating in stop n go traffic. Help needed!

seems like moisture is present in the switch.. monsoon can be a ***** for electrical systems
spray with WD-40 and see if there is any improvement..
or your battery might be in its last stages..

sachin_v... To be honest, the condition of chain solely depends on your riding style and how well have you maintained it. Regular maintenance helps in long run. But, chain sets do go kaput after 12k or before that. Also, as per preventive measure, it is better to change the set once slackness increases. Do this, if you can maintain the slackness between 30-40 mm, it can be used. If the rear wheel is at the last setting and the slackness cannot be maintained, you need to change it. AFAIK, no chain set will last 25k kms. Look at both sprocket conditions, rusting on chain.

Regarding cleaning of chain, you can clean the chain with kerosene and lube it with EP90 Gear Oil. Why do you want to lube it with used oil? Gear Oil is easy on pocket. It is better to use fresh oil.

Cheerz!!
