  • Fazer disk break issue!!

    First of all greetings to all ! I am a new member here .. a new rider aswell .. Hence I may be oblivious to many common things in this arena.

    Pardon my ignorance !

    I own a Fazer 150 , bought this Diwali (Mid OCT 09), the bike is smooth as silk , except a couple of glitches.

    1. The major problem is the front disk brake . I have test ridden many pulsars r15's and other front disk brake bikes.. there when you squeeze the brake .. the bike stops .. Period!

    In my bike .. it drags like a cycle .. and takes quite a distance to stop , during my first service I reported the problem and I was told that the hydraulic brake oil was not sufficient , the mechanic topped it up but the stupid mechanic spilled some lubricating oil on the disk , hence the braking was utterly spoiled , he cleaned the spilled oil but yet the braking is not what it was supposed to be, It is still dragging but a little less , now I am also hearing screeching noise from the calipers like the brake shoe is constantly rubbing against the disk. I am also getting strange marks on the disk which I can not take off even with a detergent. Photo attached!

    One more thing I want to know about is the soft rubbery knob attached to the calipers .. does turning the knob really do anything ? I saw the svc guy rotating it .. I want to know more about that .. anyone can help me ?

    HELP !!!!!

    2. I have been reading the forum .. people have said that the proper idling RPM should be 1500Rpms , mine idles @ 1000RPM , photo attached .. Should I really increase the idling rpm to 1500 , also tell me why should anyone increase or decrease the idling RPM?

    3.Mileage .. O boy - O boy ..I haven't really calculated but the thing is giving me around 33Kpl in city .. while I hear that guys are getting around 42 KPL in city conditions ! any suggestions?

      1. First of all, the brake "oil" isn't actually an oil. It's a liquid that actually mixes well with water. If it spills on the brake pads or disc, it can be easily cleaned with water. Note that it is corrosive to paint and any spills on paint must be immediately rinsed with plenty of water.

      The FZ front brake has less initial braking action compared to some other bikes but once applied is just as good as other bikes'. All disc brakes have a light contact at all times so a very slight drag is normal.

      The rubber part in the photo is just a cover for a pin inside that must remain clean. So the mechanic was either cleaning the outside or he's ignorant.

      From the photo, the brake disc looks normal and there doesn't seem to be anything to worry about. The brake pads are cleaned automatically everytime the brakes are applied. Very light use of the brake will cause the pads to become shiny and thereby reducing the braking effect. So you should use them harder.

      2. The tachometer isn't accurate enough to show small changes in engine speed. If the idle speed is sufficient to prevent stalling when the engine is cold, I advice you to leave it alone.

      3. Measure the fuel consumption from reserve to reserve. Report the mileage to the service centre and ask them to tune the carburettor properly.

      Good luck!

        1>Initial lag is there in all the bikes as urs is new it takes some time to wear out and brake efficiently..
        The liquid is not so dangerous afterall just rub it off with some cotton cloth ..

        2> i too have a fz about same kms as urs and my rpm meter idles at 1K rpm
        as long as it does not stall while changing gears or idling its fine..
        The changing if color of disk it happened to me ..
        its because the brake pads need to wear a little.. after 600 km its working fine

        3> check once again and keep the rpm 3K-4K while riding and dont exceed 55 kmph and check mileage if its too low then check it with the svc.check the tire pressure also mileage varies arout 5-6km/lt if its low on air pressure..

        • The idling should be set to the specified rpm as given in the owners handbook. get it fixed at the SVC. Idling at too high a rpm would cause wastage of fuel, and also run the engine hotter while standing or in slow traffic.

          Idling at too low a rpm would put a lot of strain on the internals of the engine, causing a higher rate of wear, and chances of things loosening up and loosing their tolerances goes up. ( experienced it with my R15 , the tappets went loose after about 100 kms of idling at 1100-1200 rpm ).

          So the idle should be set in the right specified zone.

          • wow ! such a nice forum .. Looks like I have come to the correct place after all !

            THANKS TO ALL THE GUYS FOR ALL THE TIPS!

            @ r@m : I read the manual it says to keep the bike under 4.5K rpm for the first 500KMS and to keep it under 6K rpm till 1000Kms.

            I used to keep the constant running RPM under 4.5K but rarely but surely I have touched touched 5K line some 5 ~ 7 times.

            That idiot svc guy revved it to 6KRPM for 3 ~ 4 seconds .. dunno what happened..

            but I do touch to 60K/hr almost every day but the rev stays less than 4.5 is that ok ?.. or should I limit to 55K/hr .. if that is so .. then the initial breaking in (the most important time) is screwed up ! The bike has done 500Kms like this and first service is done!!!

            More over .. what is the most economical gear shifting possible ??

            I use : 1 -> 18 - 1st Gear
            18 -> 29 - Second Gear
            30- > 40 - Third Gear
            40-> 50 - Fourth Gear
            50 + - Fifth Gear

            The reason is .. if I try to stay in the same gear longer the revs go up to more than 4.5k Rpm

            SO in essence I am short shifting to keep the revs low .. For a bike like FZ with a huge torque.. I don't hear any knocking when I am doing 50Km/hr @ fifth gear ! ..

            I am all ears .. PLEASE Advise.

                The primary reason might be Fuel adulteration. Did you get your bike refilled immediately after service and this problem started?

                  dude...u are doin fine...shift up at 4.5k rpm... down at 2.5krpm for the run in period....
                  u havnt mentioned whether u have completed the run in...so thats da advice....keep it cool till like 1000kms ..after the first service rip it..if u wanna....the thing that the mech did will not affect dont worry..

                        well these motoxtypes are pretty useless for highways,the "cap" doesn't help aerodynamically,you dont get a visor with it too,which means,you have to take the rains,dust etc!
                        i almost bought it!,then realized all this..better get a full face...unless you are going to use it ONLY in the city!..but yeah these helmets match the FZ terrifically!
