  • hey guys..

A weird thing happened with my bike. I live in Pune and it was around a month ago when the winter was just setting in. On a particular day, I drove to office and everything was fine. That evening when I started towards home, I noticed that the horn is not working with every press... it was like after hitting a few pot holes it would start playing on the press of the button and then stop again. Then after a few days, it stopped working completely.

I asked in this forum if anyone had faced that problem and some said they had and that I should take the bike to a svc asap. I hadn't had the chance to make a visit to the showroom, so the horn wasnt working.

Then in the previous week (on Tuesday) when the cyclone warning was issued, my bike had been parked under the sky the whole day and got very wet. I started towards home in the evening and suddenly noticed that the horn is working fine now (although the handle lock seems a bit awkward now.. seems like it needs oiling or smth).

The horn is working fine currently (touchwood). What could be the reason? I'm just curious. Could it be that the rain washed away some dirt that was causing the circuit to stay incomplete? Coz I am pretty sure that the water on the horn switch didnt cause any change in its character.

    Any idea guys?

          • Hi Guys am facing a issue with my Fazer. When i ride the bike with a pillion whose weight is around 60-70kg the pickup of the bike is drastically low, it struggles to reach 70-80. But in single it reachs 70 - 80 jus like that......
Pls suggest is it a serious issue ?

And also let me know how to clean the chains in a proper way & the lubricant needs to be used. I see some rust on the chain as it is rainin heavily here in chennai.....

I think tis rust is the only rreason for the drop in the pickup but not sure how can tis happen only in 2x and not in single...
i too faced pickup problems wen i wash my bikes 2-3 times in a week and dont oil/lubricate the chain.. but after doing these its normal..
i guess tis shud be the reason..

and for how to do tis..
i dont no coz' everytime i need of tis i go to the svc and they do it for mee....
I wud prefer to drive on the road to hell.. rather than flying to heaven...

                • @pali - the saree guard is a homologation requirement, It can be removed. Though yes the RTO might not accept it.

@denzil - Get the chain washed with petrol , then remove the excess with a water blast, and pressurized air. Then either use normal engine oil to lubricate, or else use the chain lube spray that comes. The chain is made by ROLON, so no issues even if you lubricate with oil, it will work fine ( as advised by a svc engineer).

Avoid washing the bike more than once in a week. It will only encourage rusting. Appreciate and practice the art of wax/polish, wiping, cleaning. I get my bikes washed once a month. For me a dirty bike would anyday be better than a bike thats rusting in places.

Hey ...i had faced the same problem.... I went to the SVC guys....

It wasnt a big problem..... it was jsut tht the screw which connects the wiring on the HORN was a bit loose.....the SVC guy tightened it and the horn started working agian...

Maybe u are also facing the same problem....

Hey thanks for this info, I wash my bike every sunday , even if its not that dirty. From now on will just clean it and not wash if not that dirty.

Even saw quiet some vids on youtube about cleaning & lubing the chain. They say it should be done in every 500 odd kms.
Anyone knows if this kinda brush in available in India. (Mumbai to be specific)

DO NOT CLEAN THE CHAIN WITH PETROL. Petrol contains additives and may also contain ethyl alcohol to improve engine performance. Petrol will degrade the O-rings and reduce their life. FYI, all new bikes in India with exposed chains are fitted with O-ring chains.

India Yamaha has simply washed its hands off this issue and recommended the use of spray cleaners. But in fact, chain manufacturers recommend using kerosene to clean all types of chains.Failing this, Diesel may also be used but since it's a heavier oil, it will take much longer to evaporate and may leave behind a residue. See the websites of the various Indian and foreign manufacturers.

As for lubrication, my experience is that engine oil is too thin and attracts too much dust. Gear oil, the usually recommended 90 or 140 grade, is much better and attracts less dust. But in both cases, there will be a lot of fling-off from the chain. But from what I've read on the Web, regular (daily or several times weekly) chain oiling increases chain life as compared to the use of chain lube sprays. I think this is because oil both lubricates and cleans the chain whereas spray-on chain lube just lubricates.

There are advantages and disadvantages to all the methods so it's for you to choose.

Also see my previous post on how to clean the chain.

Thanks Ranjith, was going to do the same but just wanted to know if that brush is available easily or not. Looks pretty convenient to clean the chain with that.

BTW guys, i'll be finishing 3000 kms in a couple of days and the bike will go in for 2nd service. Just wanted to say that this thread has helped me a lot as a newbie. I've been reading every post and its followups regularly. Even if the problem is not relevent to me its been adding up to my knowledge base

Fazer owners, do you get minor vibrations when you reach 58-60 5th gear.
The vibes are minor but noticable as even if i dont look at the odo I do come to know that i am nearing 60 because i get those on my footrest and handlebar. But after 62 things seem to be normal. I thought this would be normal and didn't say anything to the SVC guy on the first service.

                                Cheers...
