I will recommend the refitting of toe shifter for now.
It is butter-smooth just after servicing and remains smooth for most of the time and a bit (just a bit) stiffer towards the end of period before next service. - My case (bike).

This is exactly what he says. Smooth for 3days after servicing and back to pavilion it seems. Poor fellow. Let us see how this turns out.

One of my friend has completed 3 services so far on his new FZ-s. I happened to borrow his bike for a while. Somehow I felt that the gear shift is a bit stiff. Though it need not be butter smooth, it certainly does not feel comfy. I had to give that extra on my toe to engage the lever to next gear. The downshifting also happens the same way. I can attribute many reasons from clutch cable to engine oil. But he firmly says he has been serving the bike only at Yamaha showroom.

My questions are-
1. Is the gear shift hard on FZ-s? Do you hear that hard 'click' or 'tak' kinda feel on the toe while shifting gears?
2. Can we change to other engine oils like shell, motul, gulf, etc., in this period? Shell 20w 50 apt?

All responses appreciated !

i personally experienced gear stiffness and roughness in engine when i use Yamalube..... now using Motul 5100 SS 15W50... problem solved....

but we have seen cases where ppl still have gear shifting issues.....the main culprit then is gear spring going kaput.......need to replace it then...

Thank you Vimal. Another point consolidated. The bike in discussion has just clocked 1965kms on odo with 3 free services completed and all on Yamalube.

I'd like to add. Has the bike suffered a fall or a hit somewhere near the gear shifter?
Recently my friends Fazer got stuck in 3rd gear. It wouldn't shift up or down. He had to ride in 3rd for about 9km to reach his home.
When he gave it for service to fix, they found the shifter rod bent and therefore stuck. In addition the shifter spring had gone kaput.

Just a suggestion. Maybe your friends bike has a slightly bent shifter rod in which case shifting becomes hard.

Cheers!!

Thank you Arjith! That is a valid pointer. He gives his bike to a lot of his friends. In fact the bike is like a prost****e. How else he could clock such kilometers with a daily travel of just 6kms to and fro to office. So chances are somebody could have put the bike down (maybe). I guess he could start off with this.

But as now the bike is washed properly, the heating still presists and getting worse.. Got my slegs baked yesterday and today.. A couple of times, it got so uncomfortable that had to stop and let it cool.. don't know what might be the reason..
Do one thing.... When the engine is cold (say in the morning), start it, but dont ride it! (i.e keep it on main stand & start it). Then place your hand near the engine & try to feel the heat. Gradually warm up the engine & then rev it slightly. continue the process & twist the throttle more till you find the engine hot.
Now if you feel the heat more than normal. then definately its the issue with engine oil. Report back & I will guide you for engine oil solutions.
But if the engine doesn't heat up unusually, then chances are more that the problem is with the cluth plate. Then I need to know how old is your bike?
See...if this helps

To be frank, I have never liked Yamalube. The engine heat produced is more, gear shifts go cranky after covering some kms, gear slippages. Is the clutch lever play more? If so, he needs to get it corrected.

Cheerz!!
The real beauty lies in throttle's twist!!

Now, a lot of people would be a Yamaha fan and pretty happy with the ownership. However, learn from my mistake. I have owned bikes like Karizma, Pulsar, Splendor, CBZ, RX100 and Passion.

I own a Yamaha Fz-S, bought in 2010. I have owned this bike to close to 3 years now and listing below the failures of the bike.

Probably, all the buyers may add this to their maintenance costs.

Within 3 years (32000 KMS) I had to replace the following parts.
1. Disc pads (3 times)
2. Rear break shows (N number of times)
3. Chain+Sprocket.
4. Air Filter.
5. Footrest (Bike fell from the stand and footrest broke - poor quality).
6. Battery.
7. Clutch Plate.
8. Headlight dome (Poor quality hinges, broke while mechanic was tightening it)
9. Rear+Front Tyre.
10. Handle bar (bends even at the slightest touch of ground).

These are the parts which I can remember as of now.
Some parts still are faulty and need replacement, I am planning not to after being fed-up.

Please make a note, within the 3 years, I have never met with an accident or even the slightest crash **touch wood**. The items which have been replaces are purely based on ware-n-tear.

Apart from the regular replacement ceremony, it is a task to get the bike serviced. Either the service centers dont take the bike because of heavy load, or if they take the bike, they do not really "Service" your bike.
I have faced issues where the Engine oil was not refilled after getting my bike from service, over-charge, rip-off, attitude from mechanics etc..

Speaking of over-charge and rip-off, will write about my previous experience.

In the month of August, I got my bike services when the mechanic told me the chain and sprocket needs replacement. I asked him to replace it, but they did not have it in stock (the usual answer when they dont want to do something), so he asked me to get it done after a month.
After a month, I took the bike back to Orion motors and they were ready to replace. I told him this is not for service, only repair.
While taking the bike, the service supervisor told me it would take 1500/- to replace the parts, I was fine with it.
- He checked the engine oil and it was almost dry. Surprising, after a month of service, engine oil is almost dry.
- No Problem, I asked him to refill the oil - Synthetic oil - 900/-
- My front tyre was not running free so I asked him to check that as well.
- I asked him to get the rear break shoe replaced as it was due.

Since this was a minor repair and I had already taken an appointment a day before, the service supervisor said it would take 2 hours to get the job done. I sat at the customer lounge to take my bike after the work was done.
I was there in the service center at 9:30am and most of the mechanics arrived after 11:00am, so obviously, the work started after waiting for 2 hours and me showing a little disappointment.
After 4 hours I get my bike with a bill of 4000/-.
I could see my bike getting repaired and they charged me for servicing, labor and what not. I was very frustrated seeing the bill but on the other hand, wanted my bike to be troublefree and did not want to see the service center people faces anymore. I moved out.
Later I noticed that the front wheel was still not free + the meter light stopped working after getting the bike from the service center.

I called to lodged a complaint with Yamaha India to which they said a complaint will be lodged and they will let me know.
After 2 days I started facing issues in my bike again, so I called Yes.Yamaha to know the status of my complaint, and surprised to know that no such complaint existed.
After a lot of argument, a complaint was lodged.
I got a call form the Orion Motors and "Sethuraam" the Store manager called me to the service center and promised he will address the issues. After reaching the service center, the whole story changed. The manager started thrash talking asking me why did I raise a complaint with Yamaha.

I asked him that the bike was not serviced, howcome you charge me 425/- for service?
He asked a mechanic to take the bike inside and check if it was serviced or not, without allowing me to see. Now what kind of inspection is this? However, I peeped and saw that they are busy cleaning the spark plug and after a couple of minutes bring the spark plug to me and show that it is clean, so service is done.
I was like this is cheating from most trusted people. I did not want to get down to their level of argument so not wasting my time, I left the service center. Sethuram asked me to sign somewhere agreeing that my issue was resolved, but I denied. I told him I will talk to Yes.Yamaha about this and get it resolved as Orion motors had worst people than that in Gujri.

Irony is, after returning I called Yes.Yamaha and explained them the issue, they closed the case and disconnected my call. I am unable to call them anymore, just got a confirmation through email that my issue is resolved so complaint has been closed.

well the parts you have mentioned are to be replaced when the time comes..
air-filter, chain etc.. these have to be replaced after every 112-15k kms.. the chain on FZ has more life than on many bikes out there..
brakes pads.. they would not be able to give optimal performance all the time.. they have to be replaced and the time period mostly depends on the rider.. i changed mine even when the mech told me they would be ok for more.. why take chance man.. and all others are to be changed accordingly..

regarding the complaint.. the Yamaha is at fault.. doing such behavior with their customers.. its the same everywhere..

Pop-Up Blocker - personally, my experience with the FZ has been hassle-free if not for minor glitches, nothing major. Things were replaced mostly after 30K except for the battery, which was changed at around 15K. Well, coming to the SVC part, I have always been dissatisfied - then I learnt, never to keep one's expectations high, no matter what. After all, we do not own premium bikes. Resort to local/trusted mechs if you have - same $h!t (sometimes better) but for a much reasonable price.

Regarding your exp. at the SVC, register a complain in consumer forum. That worked for a few I know here in Bangalore - compensation & free service! If only their service was a kind that one could skip, they would've fallen at your feet but unfortunately that's not the case. They know that customers are gonna come no matter how they behave.

I am unable to call them anymore, just got a confirmation through email that my issue is resolved so complaint has been closed.
well i will agree to Nadz......these are parts which needs to be replaced over the period of time....

Regarding how you were treated in SVC its not Yamaha's fault completely..!!.....Yamaha will only come to know when people like us will complaint against them or abandon their service.

I would suggest that u just go for any other SVC who would pay heed to your problems than looting you.

Every where SVC like this exists not just Yamaha.... be it Hero, Honda, Bajaj.....its the SVC which spoils the reputation of the company..... In Mumbai itself i have been to an SVC nearby to my house due to some noise from front forks when i move over a speed breaker or any pothole. i was being forced so much to change the front cone. then i went to another SVC bit far with same problem. All they did was lube the joint and tightened some screw. there it is.... problem solved.....!!!... i even suggested them abt front cone thing...the main mechanic laughed off saying your bikes front cone is perfectly fine.... they even did free oiling at all the joints and lubed the chain....free of cost...!!! now what shld we conclude from this???!!!

There are some Yamaha SVC which loots people but there are handful of good SVC where you can let your bike and peacefully wait at the customer lounge till they do their job....

Good thing that you complained to Yamaha India regarding the SVC. i suggest you to shoot few more complaints to them so that they r forced to shut down dat SVC...

OK guys!, here I come again with few more problems:

1. Recently, I changed my lock assy, as many of you must be knowing by now! The bike doesn't start in clutch. Due to shortage of time, I called up the mech (not SVC) for resolving it and he said that there is another wire somewhere near the clutch cable which needs to be connected. Now, where exactly is it???

2. Yesterday, I was riding in reserve on my way to office. In one of the signals as I took off, the bike stalled, loosing power and the acceleration/throttle stalled (no power at all) - took it to the side, shifted to neutral and started and went off. Now, what might be the reason?? I was shit scared as you know how painful it is when your bike refuses to start especially when there is horde honking behind you.

3. Yesterday, I filled petrol for 200 bucks ([email protected]/- HP) in the evening. But by evening, while ripping during our small Bangalore G2G, bike was loosing power, something similar to the indication of putting it on reserve and the self had to be pressed for a longer duration. Today morning while coming, again the same problem, but after I switched to reserve it's OK. Now, ideally for 200 bucks I commute for 2 days (34 kms to & fro everyday). Why the heck did it shift to reserve??? Problem with the bike or foulplay by HP??

4. Meanwhile, my electricals seem to be going crazy at times - while riding, suddenly I see the engine kill indicator light on and thus power looses. Sometimes in signals I turn-off the engine and when I switch it on, indicator light doesn't blink which means it is not on then I repeat it a couple of time panicking! My battery is intact. So what might be the reason?? Electricals?? What needs to be changed?

All this is scaring the shit outta me,,, help guys, help!!! pleaseeeee.... I do not want to go against the Yamaha reliability and I have been loyal to my bike. 'can't afford to loose her as of now!!

My 2 cents - Once the tank is dry, try filling up the tank for 300/- and see if this repeats again. Drain the carb to release 'possible' air lock. Do you think negligible water might be there in the fuel tank. Maybe you could check the fuel pet cock to see water is present. A good way to check.

As a first step, check the battery and get it re-charged if necessary. Since it is monsoon, moisture might be collected at the connectors and might cause trouble. Tighten all connectors. You can spray them with WD-40 if need be.

Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.
A good mechanic will let you watch even without charging you for it. |
It is funny to know that we've been imitated and copied so well
and surprising when we notice our mistakes are copied as well.

I know that bro, took a close look and couldn't find any loose wirings or switch (is there a switch). Everything seemed to be in place!

Tank lid has water deposits due to heavy rain - chances of water drops in fuel is high I am planning to fill from SHELL today, as fellow xBhpian said that their readings are perfect irrespective of their quality (my exp.). Do you suggest I should drain the remaining fuel out completely?

I will do that ASAP. Can there be any other reason as to why the engine kill switch turns on automatically - it behave like those loose connections in houses wherein just a touch can bring back the light. BTW, my backlight went kaput recently.

Do you think, all this is connected?? I am getting this eerie feeling!!

thanks for the help!!
