  • @yamracing Can you elaborate more on the WD-40 solution. I am using Motul Chain Clean and Chain Lube on R15. Is it something different .

@yamracing: I agree with you every bike needs proper oiling of the chain, but with fz16 its open chain needs more attention. i am no auto expert just my two cents. FZ has quite a silent engine. As per the mech, due to cranky chain the engine became noisy, is this true with other bikes???

      • raiden : its not the engine that becomes noisy, but the sound of the chain running
driftking : no, more or less the same. infact, ur solution is better

        • WD-40 is actually a solution that prevents corrosion and its application is can be used for lubrication but I am scared whether it will really suite the chain lubrication because it may damage the O ring ( i am not sure whether it suites the O ring )

We should always never use normal oil or any other grease

Motul Clean chain is good, I have heard a lot about it

The manual clearly suggests a Lithium based grease. Kindly make sure before its application

          • When I went to the yamaha dealer to check out the FZ, I saw all the new bikes outside waiting to be picked up by the owners, what I noticed was that the chain had no oil at all! I even touched it and it was dry as a bone ! Is this the way its meant to be? A customer came and picked up the very same bike and rode off, the dealer didn't mention anything to him... Is is supposed to be that way when new ?

How can the drive chain be "supposed" to be dry, whether its a new bike or a used and abused one!! This is simply a blunder on the dealer's (service center) part. Period.

              • If i'm not wrong does'nt the FZ come with a O-Ring chain?

If so, the it is not necessary for the chain to be visually wet to be actually lubed. There's lube trapped in the O-Rings which is enough.

                • That's what I was wondering ! The dealer seemed to know quite a lot about their bikes and all but I was surprised to see this! What are the consequenses of running a bike chain dry?

And also since the FZ has an open chain, what about muck and grime during the rains? Won't that pose a problem ?

                  • @mzone If you use the chain dry there will be more friction in the chain. If it is kept without lubrication for many days the it will rust and break someday. Some amoung of lube is present in the O-rings which will help in reducing the friction but it wont prevent the chain from rusting. FZ has got the chain open so you will have to take special care of the chain. Get is cleaned and lubed from the Service center once in 2-3 weeks and more often in Rains.

Only use lubricant which is made to for chains with O-rings. Other lubricants may damage the O-rings. Service center uses Motul which is the best I have seen.

                    • Ok so maintaining the chain is going to be a regular affair...

Ok so owners please mention the mileage you guys are getting from your steeds....

I'm confused between the RTR FI and FZ 16 the RTR gives awesome mileage but I don't like TVS so I want to see the difference in mileage between these two...

                      • me is getting 45+ Kmpl.. I feel it is decent !!

Hmm...what about the vibrations...I have run 850Kms. When I touch somewhat around 5K+ RPM, I feel the engine is vibrating a lot more.. is it expected ??? Will it reduce over time ??

Any other special care to be taken ??

                          • Could anyone talk about the touring capabilities of this bike? How is it for long rides, and cruising at 90-100 for long stretches?

Oh and what about corner carving ?

yeap! Headlight is directly connected to the battery... You can switch on the head-lights when engine is switched off.
