To be really honest (but how can we be really honest about our much loved bikes!), the difference - if any! - between the previous drum brake and this one is....minimal! It's just that I liked it, and where is there a superbike with aft drum brake???
However, this feeling may change in favor of the disc as we plan, with some friends, a tour that will take us along some very windy mountain road, and we are not shy of speeding up and braking late. This is where the better ventilation of the disc brakes will surely come handy. I already feel them quite hot after some riding in suburds, where I have to brake often, I think they will smoke on this trip

PS: TO ALL: the way I like to post pictures (link to photobucket) has the "advantage" for viewers of making them appear in full size immediately, but in order to makes pages open faster for those who may have a not-so-fast connection, one should erase the [IMG] etc... when quoting a post that has images attached this way instead of repeating them sometimes uselessly. At minimum: just need to delete one single letter of the string to have the pictures not appearing anymore.

Hey buddy...completely looking forward to the parts list n drawings
Yes i agree the difference between the drum n disc will be minimal but in the long distance run a disc is always better....have ridden a R15 on 300km journey n its Rear Disc was a bliss

There are 2 reasons why i wanna go for rear disc brake.

      1. I have observed that 1c the drum brake gets hot after use its performance drops by almost 30%.....and i like to do long distance highway journeys when at times u gotta slow down from 80 and the drum feels a bit soggy and mushy after it heats up almost like stepping on a sponge

      2. I personally like the feel of the disc brake as compared to Drum....u know disc feels like a digital with immediate response where as drum feels analogue, lag in response.

I had an incident today as well, after getting my fazer's service done. Previously at first service I had the mechanic set the headlights turn on both lights simultaneously in high as well as low beam, I was returning home and had my high beam on. Far away there was a truck coming towards me. That guy had only his low beam on. He did not signal me in any way, so i kept my high beam on and was going ahead. After a while it seemed like he was overtaking some vehicle but he was not and I realized that he was deliberately coming on to me when I tried to signal him that he was blocking the path. That guy was coming so fast for a moment I was worried. Since there was no vehicle he was overtaking and he was doing it deliberately, I stopped the bike in the side of the road with the lights onquickly. When the guy came to a halt and seemed confused. He noticed me and was about to say something and I stopped him and asked why he was coming so dangerously, his reply was that he was irritated by the high beam so he did that. I argued with him a while and asked if he had a problem with the beam he could always signal and why he did not do that. He was saying that his high beam was not working. Then I asked why not he switch off and the light for the signal, then he became confused. Meanwhile a traffic police came and he took care of the situation as this guy was dumb as hell. Though I was afraid of losing my ride for a moment, I had a fun time with this guy. I realized both lights on at a time are more than enough for me because i was thinking of HID's previously and now I have dropped the thought of it.
Not a good decision on your part.
There was a Kerala RTC Super Deluxe air bus that I used to travel on from my home town to my work place. There used to be a driver who goes on to wrong side to scare drivers who don't dim their headlights. It worked most of the time. Most truckers and RTC drivers know about road manners. Its private vehicles that cause nuisance.

Completely alright , I guess it does happen to all of us ... Yes the words could mean either of the setups .

The decoration on my bike is a "copy" of the "Midnight Special" of Yamaha, with a few variations. These are actually stickers that were made by looking at pictures downloaded of original "Midnight Special" series. Since I have also been playing a bit with the gloss/ matte finish, I did not want anything on the two side pieces of the fairing that carry the Yamaha logo, which are now matte black, but only the "flames" looking like coming from behind the fairing. Another divergence is the matte/ glossy finish on the tank....but I am afraid the matte paint there may get damaged pretty quickly. W'll see!

Wow! That is very nice. A very neat job.....!!
How is the braking for the rear disc.
Does the wheel lock when you hit a sudden brake?

                  Thanks!
No, the brake does not lock unless I apply a real hard pressure. What is nice is that it starts breaking instantly the moment I touch the pedal and the braking power is very progressive depending on the pressure applied. Nice to get the same "touch" from both front and rear!
Does not mean the original drum brake was bad, but I effectively like it better...and it looks much better too!
I will soon know what the whole braking is capable to withstand riding on a winding mountain road (unless it rains... !)

                      • Bid farewell to the FZ!

Guys, it has been like 2yrs and 4 months from the day when I got my 1st ride the Yamaha FZ-S ! I have learnt a lot with it, came to know the up's and down's of riding a bike. Also started to love riding in it, started doing long trips with it. Started to love the word PERFORMANCE! Had some upgrades like the Daytona exhaust and all! I have completed around 35K + kms on the ODO and here I am really sad to inform you that I have sold it to one of a buddy in my college for a price of 43K INR! Main reason being that I have bought a Ninja 250R 2 months back and I couldn't use that to it max ( only did 2k kms in 2 months ) and saw it getting dusted often, so came to the decision of selling my FZ! Had lots of offer as mine was a very well maintained bike, so gave it off to a fellow guy who wasn't the highest bidder but still someone whom I trust that will take care of my ride! I haven't been an active member here! But have been an active spectator really loved the way you guys have taken care of your rides ! Enjoy every bit of it guys. Cheers! RIDE SAFE!

Firstly , Congrats on the N250R , I Hope to join you there someday ... , but I'm curious , if 2k kms in 2 months is low , then what do you do on an average ?

                          • Lots of people are seeming to be against my decision of using my high beam on the road, but most of the time when you are traveling on highways or narrow roads, I would have agreed with you all.

Let me justify my decision of using my high beam on at that time

                            1. It being an empty road and with traffic next to none.
                            2. There are cyclists and pedestrians of the villages at that time whom we cannot spot early when traveling at 50+kmph speed and also dogs that will be crossing the road.
                            3. The truck drivers on highways as you say are considerate alright, but you dont know other type of truck drivers, those mainly who carry paddy and fishes, especially those that are not loaded, the truck drivers tend to overspeed and mostly here they use HIDs or even some have 4 lights on. The only way I could counter the glare is with my high beam. And the guy whom you all are thinking I am criticizing had HIDs as well(its not your fault that you dont know that).

                            4. Motorcyclists dont prefer the roads I travel on just because of these inconsiderate trucker. I have seen many a biker die on these roads.

I have been in situations where some of these idiots scare bikers by coming right on to them when we have to get off the road and that too in broad daylight.

I have seen many trucks and so called RTC drivers overtake other vehicles at blind turns. You would know how much use the high beam is to signal such idiots atleast to let them know there is a vehicle whom they might be hitting.

If I am being considered for an idiot because of the above conditions, may be I am and, am glad that I am because on these roads with such morons, I am better off being an IDIOT.

I am not defending myself of using the high beam, but I am explaining the situations where I have to use such.

In a traffic with considerate fellow drivers and riders I might prefer my low beam as you say, but I have to disagree with you for now.

Let me also quote an instance. A few months back, I was returning home. It was rainy and it was daytime. A truck overtook me and that guy went ahead and overtook a bus on a curve. There was a biker coming he had no choice but to get off the road, but due to the mud and road also being slippery, he fell under that truck. The truck driver never stopped. That guy was just a roadkill. Most regular truckers on these roads, those especially who carry loads of fishes are aggressive and inconsiderate. Even the Express bus drivers are like that. They just get away with their mischiefs or so called skills, but such moves are dangerous.

If using high beam on stock bulbs made me an idiot, what about those who use HIDs, or projectors on their bikes and use high beam all the time. Tell me you have never seen such idiots.

I have been riding for atleast 8 years now and that on highways mostly, and I know my manners, and I also know how to counter situations that demand moves that might seem not so responsible, but tend to keep me alive and keep others getting hurt.

dude no body is saying that using high beam is good.... but in your case what you did was wrong... just imagine a reverse situation with a truck coming from the opposite direction with full on high beam.... wouldnt you have cursed the truckie??? you definitely would have, and you would have thought of him as an arrogant SOB... he thought the same about you and decided to teach you a lesson....

and now whether his high beam was working or not it is a minimum decency that you should have shown by switching to your low beams...

since you are mentioning that the road is one with traffic and pedestrians you should have slowed down your vehicle anyways, switched to low beam, passed the truck and then carried on again as normal....
