  • Oil Change

As the top being discussed is Engine Oil i would like to ask

What are the parameters that need to be considered for changing to fresh Engine Oil apart from the Odometer KM reading.

          • Hey Guys , Just got my bike back from the 11th service ... Total damages 3546 INR ...

Had a small spill and that caused the fork bend and handlebar bend and also broke the brake lever .

What are the parameters that need to be considered for changing to fresh Engine Oil apart from the Odometer KM reading.
the manufacturer recommends the oil changing intervals by testing his vehicle under ambient and 'normal riding' conditions.. So by logic you just need to check
              1. oil levels
              2. duration its inside the bike (minerals may be stretched upto every 3 months/3000 kms)
              3. Color - very dark black oils contain very large amount of burnt carbon which may stick to components if a long break (1 - 2 or more months) is taken between rides.
              4. Comfort - some ppl just change oil on comfort parameter. The bikes appearing rough, all else is fine, change the oil.

But if the riding is not 'normal' i.e it is severe. Types of severe riding-
              1) very short rides - riding before the by products can be thrown out.
              2) consistent riding at high rpms, redlineing
              3) riding in hills all the time
              4) riding with high loads most of the time
              5) riding in high traffic, stop and go situations, long red lights idling.
              6) participating in drag and other races

in these severe situations the oil intervals and durations are completely non-applicable. One has to change oil much before the normal ones. I cant give a duration or odo readings here. It depends on the rider to decide how early.. If I ride a fz at 100km/h for 500 kms in a day without a break.. The mineral is out. A similar ride on a fluid cooled R15 is not so detrimental.
And one more thing whether you are on synthetic or mineral.. Redlining is not allowed.. If one is consistently doing it he is on the wrong bike..
Synthetics can prolong oil change intervals only when ridden normally with some occassional high speeds.. If one is doing it consistently, he may have to change the synthetic even before 3000 kms of the mineral.

I know 90% guys here knew all whats written. Its for the remaining 10.

              • ThanQ very much muztariq for comprehensive reply. It was very useful

I inspected the oil and it has become dark in color, but no particulate impurities found.
Its just 2000km since i added the oil. So should i continue with it or get it changed.
On an average i use it 30- 40 Km in a day with mixture of highway and internal roads.
The bike feels smooth @ 80 with no issue but lately i have observed it take 4 -5 press of starter button to start it up in the morning (as opposed to just once normally)

Beacause you havnt mentioned it here, i am assuming you are using mineral oil and its ONLY dark and NOT black...

In that case you can stretch the oil use to more 500-700 km, again assuming you ride it 'normally'....
If its a case of synthetics then you can go until 1000-1500 km or even more depending on your preference and comfort...

30-40km per day use is okay...So ther is no immediate NEED for you to change the oil....

The method i use to check oil, is to place some oil from the dipstick in between my thumb and ring finger(fourth finger) and see if it feels very rough...then its definitely time to change the oil.

                      cheers....

                      Hey nand15 and shv18 and deville...how u guys doing???

                      • FZ-X XBHP Ride Video REVISED!!

                        Hi Guys,

sorry had to delete the old video link.. hopefully this new video will provide you some clarity on Joel's work which i guess i have been harping about all this while . Due to traffic and road conditions, i really couldn't push beyond 108 kmph.. my bike engine was not at all stressed and both Abhimanyu31 & Iceman331 were there to witness the same. Sorry tried all i could but this the best resolution i could manage..

                        Youtube, Go Pro Link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2m5Fbt9JoY

I have currently done 4000 kms on Motul 300V 15W 50 and my bike is still butter smooth... ODO Currently reading 17,990kms since last service. The engine oil colour is still golden brown a little bit darker and that's about it. I had to do a small top up of only 30 ml and nothing more. She is still revving like crazy and after the GIR xbhp 250 km ride, my FZ-X's mileage even after constantly keeping the speed of 85 - 100 kmph throughout returned 42.7 kmpl!! so Race Concepts FFE does work!! .

                        Cheers,

there is no need to change this oil of yours until you complete a full 3000(mineral or ss). I think you are using a 20w40 or 20w50 grade mineral. Try 10w40 grade next time for superior cold starting abilities. Until then use 'choke' for cold starting.

You may be interested to read this informative article on cold starting.

Afterall its not always the oil thats the culprit..
