will update here once i visit the tyre shops

Didn't knew M-Siracs are tube tyres.. Confirmed it from a dealer who has Sirac & he assured 120-17 shall fit well with FZ, they've done it.

Superking looks good, will have to dig in the details & reviews if any. Co-incidentally just met a FZ owner yesterday who had a different looking tyre then stock. I inquired & got to know it is King's tyre. I presume this must be the same brand. Though the thread pattern was no way Off-road pattern, the owner assured me the rear tyre had excellent grip in Rajmachi last season. He had used that tyre for over a year now & still the tyre looked sturdy enough with deep threads. (It definitely was a hard compound tyre)
The owner was in rush so didn't enquire where in mumbai to buy/ what it costs, but i have his contact no. so will get back to him.

Meanwhile i found three other tyres too.
      1) Duro BMX tyres. True offroading. Excellent performance as per the review of owner 'Aryan' who too it to Leh last year on his Fazer. Check the tyre pics in SachinNair's leh thread.
      2) Ceat (forgot the name)
      3) Continental Go (hard compound, cheaper, though no good reviews for the same.)

So now a potentially wider manufacturer base to choose from for any Yamaha FZ16/FZ-s/Fazer owners out there i.e

      1) MRF stocks
      2) Michelin sirac
      3) Pirelli SD
      4) Dunlop TG
      5) TVS EG Pancer
      6) CEAT
      7) Superking
      8) Duro bmx tyres
      9) Contigo

(No assumptions/guesses - All the above can be used/are being used with FZ, although current availability may be an issue)

PS: I wish i knew one more to make a list of 10 options

Duro BMX.. looks quite nice and i have gone through Sachin Nair's thread as well.

However, i am leaning more towards Michelin Sirac as it is tried and tested by hard core riders on xbhp, bcm and other sites as well. Being hard compound, it should last more than 20-25k kms. Please do get it confirmed about whether it is a tubeless or a tubed tyre. Though by default since, FZ has Alloy wheel rims supporting Tubeless, i don't think it will be a problem installing it without a tube. I guess the tire seller will be your best friend in this regard. You don't have to change the front ones unless they don't have any more grip left.

I would highly recommend either putting tire Slime (Available at Kamla Yamaha SVC, Lower Parel) or Ride On TPS (Available at Churchgate, Mumbai) which will provide add on protection against puncture.

      Cheers

        Bro,

i suggest a simple search on justdial will give a list of vendors all across Mumbai and around. That is the easiest way to connect to these vendors by phone and figure out if they have it in stock or not.

I suggest a visit to an SVC center should help... Get the Carburetor AFR checked, spark plug cleaned, Air Filter cleaned and the Engine idling speed checked.

        Cheers

To ensure that the break-in happens properly, when you are decelerating towards say a signal or want to do a stop, shift from say 5th gear to 4th and so on, your engine will act as a brake, slowing down the bike and also in the process will help breaking in the engine better.

When you are riding also shift gears constantly putting various load on the bike's engine. You may not get good mileage during this first run-in period and also the gear box may feel a bit clunky/ neutral would be hard to come by. But post 1st service your bike will become smoother and by that time brakes, engine & tires would have had done a decent amount of kms to provide you optimum performance.

If you learn the art of gear braking to decelerate, your bike's stock brakes will last you quite a lot of kms. I am closing 18k and both the front and rear are still in good shape and will easily cross 20k+ till they need any replacement.

            Cheers,
Thanks brother for helping me out. I use to usually brake and lower the gears thinking that if i lower and brake it might affect the engine. But it is opposite Will do the other way now

My first service has been done on 3rd March only. Till date it has done 820KMS only

I have so far completed 3400 kms with it. The oil level has not gone down yet, i have been checking it regularly. The Colour of the oil is still golden and slightly brownish. No Engine vibes or gear slippage or hardening. The Engine revs freely. I do mostly mix thrash and moderate city riding. So i am pretty satisfied with Motul FS 300V double ester 15W 50 engine oil. I believe Iceman331 can vouch for it as he has tested my bike.

One thing i have observed during start up, it takes lesser time for the engine to heat up to its optimum temperature on FS Oil when compared to the mineral oil.

I intend to run it close to 4500-5000 kms and see the results. I would highly recommend though, don't keep the engine on the redline for a long time, it will surely reduce the life of the engine regardless of whichever oil you use.

              • shv18, I just completed 1050 kms on my Fazer. When is the right time to change to Motul FS 300v oil? I have a strange problem..my on/reserve fuel knob's screw is quite a bit rusted since the day of delivery. Would they change it if I show it at the service centre? Also do I need to empty my tank for changing that?
Completed my first service, getting FE of 42 kmpl by sticking under 4500 rpm. Shouldn't it be more?

Whoa...FS on fazer? that too just 1000kms old? not a good idea i guess. some trusted long time owners advised me to stick with Mineral until 8000kms then use SS(not FS).

                  • okay...when is the best time to start using SS? I want to use some good engine oil which will keep my Fazer in best condition and performance and also reduce the frequency of changing the oil.
Any idea of the best way of cleaning the chain? I used kerosene-soaked cloth to wipe off the dirt on the outer region of the chain. Can't I simply put grease on chain as I did on my pulsar 135? Is it compulsory to use chain lube?

I have a prob with my FZ-S, its fuel indicator blinks (indicating low fuel) even if there is enough fuel in the tank.
Some times it starts displaying correct quantity but starts blinking again randomly.

                      Is this a serious issue?

i suggest you to stick to mineral for at least 7 or 8k kms then switch to ss or fs it will help in better setting of the engine
use kerosene or diesel to clean the chain use a brush instead of cloth
its better to use chain lube either go for motul or cheaper options like tvs chain spray is there

the fz indicator will stop blinking if there is around 2l of fuel in the main tank plus 1.4 in the reserve

                        • Guys, i have a peculiar problem with my FZ-S which is just a month old. When i had taken the bike from the showroom, the gears were pretty hard to shift and i use to find it difficult to shift it. I understand that the bike was new and this was bound to happen. On my first service, i told the service guy to look into the gear box for the hardness in it while shifting. Once the service was done, the gears were butter smooth. The oil was changed on the 1st service YAMALUBE 15W-50 API SL grade, it is recommended by Yamaha.

But, off lately, again the shifting problem has resurfaced, and i find it difficult to shift the gears UP. While downshifting, i don't find any problem. Sometimes the gears change like butter smooth and suddenly it becomes really hard to shift. The bike has done only 880 KMS till date.

Can you please share your views on the same please.

Agree to what christo says, FS have more friction busters in their chemistry and with just 1050 KMS on the ODO, it is not advisable to go in for FS Oil. The gears will start pitting and you might end up in having a very serious problem.

No FS for atleast 6000-7000 odd kms.

Why so rush? Let the engine get settled a bit. I moved to FS oil at around 8K.

                                Hi,

i don't think there should be any problem with shifting to FS oil right after finishing your run in period as one of the senior riders LuckyLuke has pointed out. However, i would suggest finish your first 5 free services using Motul mineral/ semi synth oil (mineral grade: 20W 40, Semi Synth: 15W 50 single ester) and once you hit the paid service slips then shift to FS oil. That way during your paid service trips, your service interval will also increase to 4,500 - 5,000 kms (based on your riding style) besides the regular check ups like, chain tension, air filter replacement as mentioned on your ride's manual, fork oil replacement if needed etc.

Your bike's FE is pretty decent. it will increase/ remain constant based on your riding style and regular maintenance.

                                Cheers,
