  • How would I know if my chain / sprocket needs a change? What should I look out for? I have clocked 17K on stock as of now.

Look for chain slackness i.e. if your chain below the swing arm is hanging losely and the adjustment level of your bike rear tire has hit the end point, it is time to replace both chain & sprockets. Never replace just the chain alone!! Another way to know is also that your chain would be making weird sounds (indian iteration "Khat Khat" noise!! ).

May be this video will help: Motorcycle Rear Wheel - Installation and Chain Adjustment - YouTube

Always buy genuine Yamaha chain & sprockets. Genuine parts from Yamaha usually have a Yamaha hologram as a sticker which will get torn the moment you open the seal pack.

      Hope this info was useful,

      Cheers

Thanks for the reply! I hear a "ghaarrrr" kind of noise when its running. I suspect the chain is loose and touching the rubber portion above the swingarm. I'll tighten the chain and see if it persists and will keep using until I hear "khat khat"

Another issue, whenever I try to upshift before 4.5K rpm i find it to be very rough .. however things get smooth at 5K and above. Its been only 1K kms since my last oil change with a total running in 17K kms. I'm on SS. Is this normal or an issue with my clutch plate/setting?

            Hi,

Life of chain purely depends on your usage, maintenance and weather conditions. My stock one had to be replaced at 13, 990 kms as the chain started slacking too much for my comfort. Plus Mumbai being close to sea also affects the open chain quite a lot.. May be you just need to get the chain adjusted and that's all. Lubrication and adjustment. will help a lot.

            Cheers,

            • Logging here after many months. Feels at home.

To know if your chain has gone kaput there is one way. Place your bike on center stand and check the chain slackness. Now rotate the wheel and check the slackness again. If your chain and sprockets are gone then the slackness will differ at different points.

If this happends then its time to replace the chain and sprockets.

for checking chain and sproket wear.. Do the following thing:
press the chain as hard as you can from the middle point between the two sprokets and try to pull the chain from the sproket with your other hand. If it comes 1/4th of an inch or more out its worn out.. Otherwise just tighten the chain..

There was an interesting discission sometime back on the forum.. Even visual of the above procedure is pasted by me.. Post 13343

regarding duration for chain set change.. If you keeplubricating the chain every 10-15 days.. You can extend its life. 20,000 kms is normally the end of road for an fz chain. I have munched 7000 kms and chain was tightened only at 550 kms.. I can see the chain wet everytime I glance it. Mine should last long really long.. :-)
the reason for lubricating so much - as the chain pulls the rear sprokets the joints stretches when lubricated, if lubrication is absent the joints start loosening and result is non reversible chain lengthening.. And if continues the chain breaks from the loosest joint.

My bike is 1100 kms old. Changed oil from SVC few weeks back. Which SS is the best for my Fazer and how much does it cost and when to change? Do I need to buy two cans of it? I am getting 42 kmpl, but i want more.
Whenever I rev the engine in the morning or after driving 1-2 kilometers, a few "phut phut" sounds coming from the exhaust..should I be worried?

                    • Is there any way we can install the Apache-type petal disc on our fazer? Looks so cool. Do we have to change the disc pads also? What are the costs involved?

shell ax7 is my favorite in ss.. Though motul ss is superior(sourceing problems for me)
If your oil was changed few weeks back.. The next oil change after 1st service is 2000 kms on the fresh oil.. Thats why its better to go for ss until 3ks. As dropping an fs for 2000 kms is neither cost efficient nor good for the envt. Shear wastage.

My fazer is giving 38-40 no matter how i ride.. If the engine hasnt been tuned by yamaha post 2011 dont expect more than 42.. That magical 45 may be achievable on fzs. Fuel efficienct oils are not available for bikes. Phat phat sound can be due to unburnt fuel from faulty carb setting or sparkplug carbon, I think.

Regarding your disc query.. I am Blank.

                        • Guys , A 7th puncture with three already leaking ones have just shut the door on my bike's rear tyre , I guess it's had enough . 22177 on the ODO and it died on me ...

So now it's time to change , Planning to stick to stock . What is the best price I could give for a new one ? the SVC quoted 3700 INR , the MRF guys quoted 3500 INR and the J.C Road guys quoted 3100 INR ... Same tyre , 3 different quotes , whom to trust ?

                          • hello everyone, back here after a long time.. feels nice..

I have shifted to a place closer to work now and dont get to ride for long distances much .. earlier it was >60kms per day .. now its less than 15kms..

anyway, the bike has done almost 22000 kms and I some how feel that the engine isn't as smooth as it used to be earlier. I have been getting the services done on time and got the engine oil changed at regular intervals too. The last service with oil change was less than 10 days ago..

due the short commute on a busy road, I didnt get a a chance to go beyond 50-60kmph during last few months. Last weekend, when I went to Vashi, i felt the engine vibrations beyond 60-70kmph.. although i could reach 110 without much fuss, but vibrations were felt throughout the 5k-7k rpm range..

The other thing which changed over the last few months is the rear tyre, I got a Contigo, due to the non-availablity of other brands in my area.. I know its not the best in the market, but it was cheap and i felt like giving it a try. The tyre itself has been doing well.. and i dont have any stability or grip issues..

So, for the engine vibrations, what are the few things that I should be checking for?.. the oil has always been Yamaha-lube 15w50 semi-synthetic .. the air filter was changed almost 10 months back..

In Mumbai, western suburbs area, the lowest I know is 3K .. but availablility is an issue.. most times its out of stock and one has to wait at least a month or so.
