  • Check the idle RPM of the bike when the engine is sufficientoy hot.... the idle rpm should be around 1200....

    1. I will check the idle RPM.

seems like an issue with the clutch wire..... when you are in a gear and stationery and have the clutch engaged does the bike tries to move forward by small amounts and you need to apply brakes to stop? if yes you need to change your clutch wire...

    2. You are spot on with the issue. The bike does try to move by small amounts when the bike is in gear and clutch is applied. Will change clutch wire.

change both the oil seals at the same time....

    3. Yes, I will change both oil seals at the same time. Don't know if it's you but someone mentioned changing only the leaking oil seal as a rookie mistake and I came to know about this from his post.

yes 26000km is a very low figure for a new bore.... did you ask teh mechanic why you want a new bore?

    4. Local mechanic was telling that bikes of these days are not built like the old times and they wear very fast when not maintained, I am not able to buy this. The SVC guy was telling me to go for an engine overhaul and when I gave a puzzled look he dropped the suggestion. What exactly do they do when they say engine overhaul.

Will contact argee. Thank you for your answers.

    Will be contacting Mr. Anand

your mechanic is totally bullshitting when he is saying that now a days engines dont last..... my advice for you is too do the following:

        get it thoroughly serviced including:
removal of fork bend if any and changing of handle bar if its bent
        changing clutch cable
        change air filter
change your engine oil to either of the motuls also change the oil filter
changing both fork oil seals and fork oil use proper grade
        clean carb
clean brake pads and rear liner

do this run the bike for a couple of hundred kms on shell unleaded fuel in splendour mode....
and then observe if you find any change or not in the bike....
then i think you will be able to say properly if you want a proper engine overhaul or bore change this early.....

Also check if you need to change the clutch plates by the method posted before by mad mik.....

P.S: my bike is 3 years old and has cjust completed 28000 kms giving a milleage of 40kmpl with shell.....

        • I'd first see if there is any adjustment left in the clutch cable before looking to get a replacement.
Adjusting a clutch cable is only a few spins of the round dial located at the clutch lever and possibly at the other end if needed.

            • The cable broke?
Where abouts? at the ends where the stops are or the actual wire?
How old was the bike when the cable snapped? I see you wrote it broke the 3rd day, Was that from new or from when you adjusted it?

                  • Took the bike to a mechanic nearby (this is not the guy who was asking me to change bore) and he told me to change clutch cable and fork oil and seal. I asked him if it will suffice if I just replace oil and seal in the fork that is leaking just to see his answer and he was insisting on replacing both! (Knowledgeable guy I figured. It looks like he just completed a fork oil change in another fz16.)

After this episode the clutch cable broke! and with much difficulty took it to the nearest repair shop and had the cable replaced. The difficult gear shift problem is now no more. Now took the bike to Anand, a mechanic recommended by a bhp member and he adjusted the idling (I think he adjusted a screw in the carb and engine stalling reduced by 95%) . But this guy told me it will be enough to replace oil and seal in one fork.

                    Tomorrow will do the following.

                    1. Change fork oil and seals. (Both)

                    2. Change clutch cable. (Will change it to Yamaha one. The nearest repair shop used a unknown brand)

                    3. Change air filter.

                    4. Will check for fork bend and handle bar.

                    5. Clean carb. Is it necessary to clean silencer too?

                    6. Clean break pad's and rear liner.

                    7. Check the health of spark plug and replace if necessary. How often do you guys replace spark plug's?

Anything else, please let me know.

Will check clutch plate using Mad Mik's method, Hi Mik!

The front break pad's were replaced recently and brake oil also was changed recently.

Engine oil (Castrol 20w40)was changed around 600 kms's ago and will do it once I do another 2000. If you think other wise do let me know.

Shell pump is close by and will try using it for the next few fillings. Splendour mode, very difficult!! but will do.

Look's like our bikes are very similar in age and Km's but mine give 354-37 with BP. I use this bike for commuting and many times I start, ride for 1 km and stop.

My only advice to you is ensure that you follow the basic servicing of your bike or later the bills go sky high with your ride. Gears hardening are usually the sign or engine oil going bad. Be careful with Castrol as there are a lot of fakes floating around in the market. If you feel the ride getting vibey or the gears hardening then you that you have been sold a lemon, replace the oil asap.

She deserves a basic care if you make her run around so much..

                      Cheers,

No the castrol should hold good for another 1500kms..... no use of changing it now..... by splendour mode i meant ride at less than 4000rpm or 60kmph in fifthe gear.... change gears as follows up shifts 4k downshifts 2k....

Silencer will clean itself if the fuel going in is good and there is no unwanted particles in the carb, dont worry about it.....

                          • Guys a small question... Can r15's speedometer be fitted in our fz? I've never much liked the console of fz so can it be replaced with that of r15's? I actually like the analog-digi combi rather than all digi one. Will it be plug and play or the connecting socket would be different? I think the speed sensor should be the same in both. Has anyone tried this mod? Thanks.

Will do the necessary services regularly. Do you guys stick to 70 day service interval even if you don't cross 2500 KM's?

It's very unlikely that the Castrol is lemon as I buy it from a very reputed petrol pump. (I mostly fill fuel here) . Will go for motul oils as recommended by you in previous pages.

I planned to get Motul Fork oil but in the hurry forgot and bought this yamaha oil. Does these brands have significant different in quality, if yes I will go and return it. Or is the oil just repackaged motul as in the case of yamlube?

Due to heavy rains here Local mechanics were not available for the whole day. Only water wash and Clutch cable change was done.

                              Deciding between mechanics:
I plan to use a single mechanic hereafter and I am confused between two.

                              Mechanic no1 :
                              1. 6-7 kms from my place.
                              2. More experienced but
he suggested to go for changing oil in only one fork (Does this show ignorance or is it it won't matter attitude)

                              3. Recommended by XBHP member.

                              Mechanic No2:
                              1. 1 km from my place.
                              2. 2 1/2 years experience.
                              3. He was right in recommending to for oil change in both forks.
                              4. Tends to delay and was very hesitant when I said I want to see everything thats being done.
                              5. Also this guy was mentioning that FZ forks are similar in construction to IND-SUZUKI bikes and they require special tools whereas it's easier to fill fork oil and seal for other bikes. He said he has to take the forks to another place to seal them, he was mentioning some kind of hydraulic equipments.
                              Is this true?

Help me choose between these 2 guys.

                              • Hi,
Few days back I replaced the engine oil with ELF Moto 4 Gold along with a oil filter change and after that I hardly ride around 500 km. But I feel that my bike’s NVH level is getting high afterwards. It runs smooth when cold, but getting harsh after around 5 kms. Gear shifting is also not that smooth. I checked all the area myself and found nothing to pin point the problem. Should I replace the oil again?
My bike is 12000km old and I never clean the carb, though once tried System G with the fuel few weeks ago and drain the carb after that. Should I clean the carb now?
                                Any pointer guys..
