Installing a 9 amp battery means you are just installing a bigger storage of charge, like for example, u have a 1000 liter water tank in your house and if you upgrade the tank to 2000 liters, then its not necessary to upgrade your water source too to fill the tank. The source can be the same. Its just that you are increasing your carrying capacity. So even if you install a 9 amp battery inplace of the 5 amp one, the stator will give the same charging to the battery as it was giving to the previous one. As even the previous 5 amp batt was working fine with that amount of charging, there's no need to rewind the coil for the 9 amp batt as its just the storage capacity and nothing else. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • guys noticed it today......... there is this humming sound (not very loud but annoying enough) coming from the front portion. i thnk its from the tyre side coz it goes when bike is still.......and increases its frequency as the speed increases. is it due to the disc brake or smthng else?.... anybdy faced this problem?

      • Put bike on center stand and rotate the front wheel and check from where the sound is coming and then if its from the disks, remove pads and scrubs together.
And most probably the sound will vanish

        Cheers

                  • Yamaha FZ Motorcycle Charging Socket Mod & other goodies

                    Hi All,

I have been contemplating about having a charging socket on my ride for nearly 2 years because of my touring requirements where at times one is in the middle of no where and then realises that the phone battery is at the last bar or else the electric motorcycle air compressor/pump that i have been wanting to carry with me for 500+ kms rides is completely useless in those circumstances which is indeed quite scary should the tire deflate in the middle of nowhere and i am stuck for good many many hours, ruining the fun, ruining the trip, ruining everything.

EDIT: I am not a big fan of a foot pump after doing a hard day of riding so rather laze out and let the electric pump do the hard work for me.

As mentioned before, i have always been apprehensive about doing any kind of electrical mods/ wire cuts from the stock wiring of the bike regardless how simple DIY it is coz the coastal weather of Mumbai gets the better half of ruining anything and everything it finds exposed!!.

So after doing a lot of research, i decided it was safe for installing a cheap desi jugaad DIY on my bike to do the deed.

FOR NOOBS; pay attention as this may be interesting!

Now Yamaha FZ/Fazer has a DC/DIRECT CURRENT electrical wiring set up. A lot of bikes like Honda Unicorn and others have AC/ALTERNATE CURRENT wiring setup. What does this electrical mumbo jumbo mean? Simple. When you turn the ignition keys to ON position on your respective FZ/Fazer and try and switch ON the headlights, you will see that your ride's high beam and low beam and all other lights can turn on without the engine being cranked. If you try the same thing on your friend's Honda unicorn, Honda shine, you will notice that the head light doesnot turn on unless the engine is running. Now why is that? Our rides have DC circuitary or in short the lighting system runs independently from the battery directly whereas in Honda Unicorn/ Shine the lighting circuitary is dependant on the alternator or the RR unit. So it is pretty evident that when a Honda unicorn the engine is idling, the headlight dims quite a lot whereas the same doesn't happen on our respective rides.

Why am I blabbering all this? simple if one intends to do this easy & cheap mod mentioned here, it is imperative that the wires of the charging socket are connected to the battery terminals directly regardless of whether the bike has AC/DC circuit wiring. So it provides steady 12V DC current to the socket which is required by all such motors/pumps or chargers. Plus it also lets one avoid cutting any stock wiring minimising any chances of current leak/short circuit and damaging vital electrical units or worse fire hazards. Plus since, the socket is directly connected to the battery, it will not hamper/put any extra load on the electrical system of the bike nor the fuse connected to the circuitery.

Now coming to my mod, i had searched everywhere looking for a car charging socket only and without any lighter connected to it. But as it turns out, it is extremely difficult rather Nyon IMPOSSIBLE to find one. So i had to settle for a car cigarette lighter+socket for doing all my deeds.

I did my research hunting for cigarette lighter+charging socket right from the cheapest to the most expensive ones available in the local car accessories shops here as I am still not in Mumbai. The lowest quote i got was Rs. 90 and the highest was Rs 500!! I decided that it is wise to go for a some what branded one and also managed to convince the dealer to provide me replacement warranty for 6 months should the kit decide to go KAPUT in this duration.

                    Company: XENOS
Type: Cigarette Lightter with Socket for charging and others.
Extra Goodies: 6 months replacement warranty and extra 2-3 meters of good quality wiring
                    Total Price: INR 250/-

below are some of the pictures of the same:

pic 1: Car Cigarette lighter kit+ Charging Socket & extra wiring

Pic 2: Cigarette Lighter removed and the socket

Pic 3: Wiring: Red wire is for +ve Terminal & Black wiring is for the -ve terminal of the battery

Noobs please do bear in mind that the red wire connecting to the center of the kit is +ve and the black wire connecting to the side or the edge of the kit is -ve. So the respective wiring has to be connected to the battery accordingly. This set up is more or less similar across all the charging ports+cig lighters irrespective of the brand.

My only concern so far has been with the cigarette lighter as if for any reason it gets accidently activated while riding and gets ejected out of the charging socket, it can be a major fire hazard. So to avoid it, i will later either connect a switch system or else simple fill in inert/ non reactive stopper inside the socket when not in use to avoid the lighter getting engaged.

For a mobile charger, i decided to go with Callmate Phone Charger bought from Online Shopping India - Buy Books, Mobile Phones, Digital Cameras, Laptops, Watches & Other Products @ FlipKart .It costed me just 230 bucks INR and 30 bucks extra for shipping along with 30 day replacement policy. I believe the same product may be available a bit cheaper in the local shops however the lightning fast delivery and quality assurance from flipkart sounded more convincing, so i decided to purchase it from there. For Noobs, flipkart also provides cash on delivery option across major cities and some limited B cities. For the rest of India, one can use internet banking and other methods.

This particular charger can be used to charge most of the different types of phones available in the market likes of: Blackberry,Samsung, Nokia, Sony. For Blackberry & Samsung; both mini USB and Micro USB charging ports and Nokia both thick and thin pins are available. Being cheap, even if it dies in say after 6 months to a year, one can simply purchase another one from flipkart or somewhere else they are comfortable with. There are other brands as well for the same.

Below is the image of the same:

                    Pic 4: Callmate Phone Charger

Now it is very important to keep in mind that. When someone wants to charge his phone via this set up, ensure that the charger is disconnected from the socket if the bike is not in operation or the engine is not running. Or else slowly and steadily it will drain the battery. Secondly, if someone wants to use this set up while riding, remove the charger from the socket first, start the bike and then connect it to the socket and then resume charging. Or else it may blow the fuse/fry the circuitery inside the charger.

The same applies for the air compressor as well.

For noobs, electric air compressor/tyre inflator looks like these:

                    Pic 5: Air Compressor

Pic 6: Air Compressor with the PSI gauge

                    Pic 7: Slime Tire Inflator/Compressor

Pic 8: Another type of Slime air compressor

There are different brands and variants of the same but more or less they work on the same principle of compressing the air and shoving it inside the tire!! I would always recommend going for a branded one as cheap chinese ones either give out wrong readings/die out soon/ just don't give out enough pressure to fill air/ take forever!!

UPDATE: For riders based in Pune, Maharashtra do keep a lookout for this electric tire inflator/air compressor from a local company LIMI Digital Tyre Inflator:

Website: Link Image Makers (India) Pvt. Ltd.

Pic 9: LIMI digital tyre inflator/air compressor

This one weighs just under 500 gms+torchlight and is extremely reliable as per my research and guys from t-bhp. Has a digital gauge and stops the pump the moment the set pressure has been filled in the tire. Comes with a 1 year warranty but people have been using it for over 2+ years without any problem. And being an Indian company when compared to cheaper chinese brands, servicing and repairing should not be a problem at all.

Costs around INR 2.8k - 3k. But riders in Pune, Maharashtra can get it for cheaper by sweet talking.

Slime is being officially imported by scan solutions India and their electric tyre inflators are definitely better designed and robust however pricing wise may be more expensive and at the moment may be selling the whole kit along with the slime tire sealant only.

I bought one from dealextreme. They have DIY sockets, it comes with fuse. I'm using it with a switch. Also try foot pump as well. Won't take much time to fill up the air & it's smaller in size but little heavy. You can stuff it in the tail bag.

I am indeed not a big fan of hard labour after a long ride so decided to let an electric compressor do the work for me.

I decided to do a bit of tinkering myself so either a switch or a fuse system, will take a call once i do the deed.

Hi Christo the answer is YES you can connect the mobile charger directly to the battery. However the better route is to go for the above mentioned method as it allows you to disconnect the system should you decide to take it out from your bike or else just intend to replace a faulty one plus it will also allow you to connect any future devices which support the 12V socket like say a GPS navigator or anything else. A true plug and play option. Cost wise also the socket is not that expensive.

Mate as long as it has been made to use specifically in a motorcycle engine then there is no problem. Ester is no alien thing that will damage your bike rather designed to get stuck to the cylinder walls to give better lubrication to the engine.

Do you mean re-coiling the stator bobbins in order to increase the alternator's power/ output??? May I add that this would also mean replacing the regulator....and not sure that there is room for bigger bobbins...! Sorry, I do not understand how and why ???!?!?!

Can you please guide us a little more precisely into this massive "lighting" thread you are referring to (which page)?

                                Thanks
