  • Re: Honda CBR 250R

My CBR has been drinking a lot of oil lately. On last oil+filter change I poured 1.7l Shell 10W40FS. In first 2k km usage engine oil level went down so I poured it with 300ml oil to bring it to mid level seen from the window. In next 2k km usage again oil level gone down quite low. I mostly ride it gently(under 6k rpm) so this much oil consumption is a concern for me.
There is no apparent leakage of oil from engine, slight dust gathers nearby oil filter opening but there is no leakage as such.
ODO reading is 41500. Do I need to replace piston rings?

Yes I did. The after sales service was a head ache and becoming a trauma as days passed. Still waiting for some replies from Kawasaki that I send some years ago. I am done with kawasaki . Another one is, For example, a silencer shield costs ₹10,600. Yes, just the outer small aluminium/steel shield. I wouldnt mind paying it for an sbk, but another headache is you have to wait months to get hold if it. Talk about customer service. The Bangalore service centre is like any other local service centre as far as I dealt with them. Enough was enough . CBR now does 50km/day without breaking a sweat, and we have Karthik at Tansi Honda(BLR) to take care of her as well. Also I dont mind someone hitting my exhaust shield at office parking. Haha.
Ride, ride and ride.. But always do it responsibly..

Any smoke coming out of exhaust? Is it happening from last oil change or going on for last few oil changes? Also, check the outermost part of muffler for any soot deposit and let's know.

There is no smoke. it's been happening since last few oil changes and gradually worsening. Muffler part I will check tomorrow and let you know.

Why is there no smoke when the oil burns? Is the cat con absorbing it? I have the same oil consumption problem. Bike burns through oil at 400 ml per 6000 kms now.

              No soot on exhaust tip.

                I got my pre-owned cbr on 01/01/2018, odo 23k, 2015 model, C-ABS for 1.25l.

                I had completed 200 KM's so far....

Below points are noted while riding..

                1. Engine feels quite rough in 1st - 3rd gears i.e., below 50 kmph...

                2. In the 50 kmph range feels some vibrations from handle bar and riders footpeg... After that 50 kmph I don't feel any vibrations... Is that my mindset because I had no experience with 125cc+ motorcycles....

                3. That black plastic thing inside the fairing near handlebar was missing... Only a small section missing ... Is that problem to find....

                4. Gears shifting was not that smooth in my bike only no offence please, it's also my mindset because I read all here say that cbr250 gear shifting is butter smooth....

Unable to take my bike above 70 kmph because that 200 km was fully inside the city limits...

                5. Suspension make some thud noise with pillion on some rough patches, I have to check it with SVC...

I have to consult the above issues with Didar Honda Egmore....

Experienced cbr250 riders kindly help in these regards...

                Thanks

Can I ask you which bike you were using earlier, CBR is not smooth as a refined 150-180cc bike. I had many issues when I bought used one like you because I was upgrading from a unicorn.

I believe your bike need a good service first, instead of giving just at a Honda service center, identify a specialist mechanic. We have a similar guy in Bangalore.

About the roughness and gear issues. I had all these issues in my bike too. The main culprit was faulty clucth cable. My bike was in among mint condition with 8 km in odo, I never thought clutch cable had issues. That's why I was saying a specialist CBR mechanic required.

Next is chain condition, you need to clean it neatly and lube it. A rough chain will make a lot of issues.

Next point is, engine oil condition. In my bike, even though previous owner changed the oil on time, he never replaced oil filter or he was not advised to change. Honda synthetic engine oil is not so great in long life, people are saying shell synthetic do much better performance. But I won't recommend if your bike is under 5 year warranty.

So my humble request to you is identify a specialist mechanic and do a service. Later, there are many experts are here who will be able to guide you on particular issues.

                    Thanks for your response yathi...

I have a discover125 for 13 years and had an Enfield 350 for over 6 months...

Btw, previous owner changed the engine oil before one thousand KMS, he also used shell FS and I cleaned and lubed the Chain after I got my bike...

I suspect I am unable to follow the rpm vs kmph table... I.e., specific gear in specific rpm for specific kmph....

Ok sir, as per your advice I will search and contact a cbr specialist ASAP...

Please do a engine flush for every oil change or 3000kms between interval. Do it 3 times in that 10000 km mark interval and see oil consumption is reduced or not. The reason could be oil return holes in the piston could be smaller due to carbon accumulation hence can go past rings and burn. 40K for cbr is nothing with a water cooled and unstressed engine. Dont be in a hurry to open the engine. I had the same issue with my R15S i did the same thing but with a different technique. This will make a controversy here so i wont discuss. If you willing to do that PM me.

hey mates, recently after oil change I'm feeling the gear shifting are not smooth as earlier. It's thug-thug most of the times at least 1-2nd gears. Prior oil change it was butter smooth, even on my last 1800kms trip it was quite good along with a cleaned and lubed chain. Now the chain is cleaned and lubed but still the thug-thug sound is there. I'm suspecting below few points for this:

                        1. Changed engine oil just 100kms ago. Shell FS 10w40.
                        2. ODO has touched 25k+ kms in 4.5years and Honda ASVC guy told me to change the chain-sprocket, though the local mechanic didn't.
                        3. This time I cleaned the chain using WD-40. Earlier using kerosene to do the same.

Any pointers from above which could lead to a non-smooth gear shift?

Hello. Sharing my experience with you hoping it would help you having your CBR in a better way too.

                          1) shell oil needs time to warm up for a smoother gear ups and down. Keep the bike running idle until you get 1 bar on the heat display. And then slowly rev the bike till 3-5k rpm for a few seconds, then rev it till 8k rpm and then go. But if you want smooth shifts, and you rush bike too, then only use the Motul 7100 10W-40. I personally love this engine oil.
                          2) Get the chain- sprockets changed for the betterment of your bike.
                          3) DO NOT use WD-40 to clean chain, try using Motul C1 chain cleaner and later use Motul C2 chain Lube. Its really good.

                          Ride Safe,
                          Cheers✌

Hi everyone. Had been reading many of posts here about riders complaining about the thud sound the bike makes while downshifting the gears. I am no expert in the biking world but it is just a part of my experience that i would like to share.
When you are downshifting gears, make a quick rev between 4.5k - 5.5k rpm and drop the gear before the needle starts to descend. And VOILA!!!
But then it is just my experience with my CBR 250 using Motul 7100 10W-40 engine oil.
Hope you find yours sweet spot for downshifting near about the same rev range.

I noted this as well when I changed to Shell but it should get better as the engine warms up and the oil gets older. Also, do check on the chain/sprocket life left as per the manual/instructions here. Go for a replacement if the chain/sprockets are never replaced so far in 25k+ kms.

I guess you are talking about revv matching/throttle blipping technique. I've been practicing this for quite some time and notice its effects on higher gears but I dont feel it helps much with the thud sound while downshifting from 2 to 1. Nevertheless, this is a good practice to follow.

I've ridden my pre-used CBR for 5k+ kms now & no matter what, there is some thud noise (low or high) between gear 1-2 (Downshifting or Upshifting) and I'm learning to live with it.

Honda ASVC guy insisted me to change the same at 18K and even at 23K but I completed a 1800kms trip recently without any hiccups. While tightening the chain from a local mechanic he said it has more life. I was not convinced by the SVC guy as he always go for early replacement. Just because of my poor knowledge I changed both brake pads at 18K while after posting here I came to know it had 4-5k life left easily. Even that mechanic told me change spark plug while as per manual it should be changed at 48K. And somebody has reported here that they have opted for a chain replacement only after 40k.

IMO once your machine covered a good amount of distance or older than 3-4years Honda SVC guy always try to empty your pocket.
