  • engine harshness!

Hello guys, i am having some trouble with my bike. I got my bike in March, this year and have completed only around 1300 kms since. I did a proper run-in and have changed my engine oil in all the three free services. When i start the bike in the morning, it feels smooth for hardly a kilometer. As the engine gets hotter (normal running temperature), it starts becoming harsh. The harshness is felt around 4k in the first two gears, and around 5k in the 3rd and 4th gears. This harshness is only related to the engine sound. There isn't any major vibration anywhere. The sound changes above 6k RPM and it feels extremely stressed, even in 4th gear. A 'krrrr' like sound comes. While engine braking, a buzzing noise comes. I rode few other R15-s and they don't show any behaviour like mine. My college route includes moderate to heavy traffic and is around 10 kms. After coming back home, I have tried to revv it in neutral and found that at times a 'phat' 'phat' sound comes from the exhaust. The sound of the engine, while accelerating doesn't sound very healthy. When i had completed around 700 kms, i had to change my spark plug cap, because it had cracked (this has happened to many R15 bikes, bought in Q-1). The ASC didn't find any problem with my bike, as the mechanic rode it for a very short time, and moreover, when the engine was pretty cool. They were not ready to listen only. Found them to be the most dumb persons on Earth! Asked, if my bike had tappet noise, they said that tappet settings are fine. Happened to meet a local mechanic. Told him about my problem and he suggested to change the spark plug.

Has anybody faced anything like this? Please help guys. Not being able to enjoy my ride!

probably a silly question after a long time -

those of you who rev your bike once in a while, how often do you refill your engine oil ? i know the manual says it should be done every 3000 kms or so, but i assume that's for normal riding..2500 kms sounds more like it ?

i know i know, by checking the oil level once every few days i can keep track of my oil, but am just trying to get a number for some other reason.

second service has not yet been done...supposed to be done around 3000 kms but i think i will get it done at 2500-2600 or so..right now the odo shows about 1950 kms.

it was about 900 kms on the odo when my bike had its oil refilled and oil filter changed (it was the first service)..since then, i have had several speedy rides, but only 3 times i gave it some full throttle (or nearly full throttle) action including high RPMs in the low gears (but not riding at high RPMs in low gears, just getting there and then shifting up) to maximize the top end pull at higher gears...what i mean is only 3 times i revved it hard riding at/nearly full throttle at 6th gear for several minutes (but not too long a time that any of you should worry about)

other times i was in speed (of course ) but attaining them in a more chilled out manner and never took the RPMs above 9-9.5k for a prolonged time (maybe a few times for a few seconds at 5th or 6th gear) and no high RPMs in low gears..

so considering the description above, is it alright to have the oil refilled at 2500-600 kms (or earlier if the oil level goes checks out nearly minimum before that), or should i get it done now ? after all it's only been about 1000kms since the first service when the oil was last refilled.

so far the oil level is fine, as of latest check up that i did today..lubed the chain today, just confused about the oil (despite what the manual says).

oil level stays normal unless there is a problem..
its good that you keep a check on oil level from time to time, but there isn't much to worry about.. our Yamaha engines are very much reliable in this manner..
and also red-lining once in a while would be good for the engine..
as for the change interval, change the oil in 2500-3000 kms range.. as yamalube doesn't stay good for long.. or if your riding in low, change it every 60-70 days (that's what the manual says and also i do follow that)

          Ride safe and have fun.
          Regards
          Nadeem

I own a R15 V2.0. I bought the bike when it was released, up until last 4 months i have not faced any problems in a serious manner, but now i am facing a problem with my bike, while shifting between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears i hear a very loud noise while shifting, this situation arises randomly and it settles down all by itself, i can not say when exactly this comes up, i have the clutch engaged properly still the noise comes, it comes while i am at speed and shifting very fast, but it comes at random instances.

The noise is only between these 3 gears, i use only YAMAHA preferred ENGINE OIL, which BTW if anybody can suggest me anything else which is better than that it would be good, and i have tried to reset the gear lever, not working at all.

So now i have had it, if any one is facing same kind of problem with their R15 lemme know..

And oh yes.. pls do give suggestions regarding this problem..

              Happy Riding

Believe it or not, because of hard braking I hd to change my front disc pads at 5.3k and now my odo has clocked 7.4k and the new pads have worn out like completely (my mechanic claimed it can run for more 500kms).

Make sure you reach full rpm's i.e. till 10500 in all the gears and also bend to such an extent that your chin touches the tank. I guess this is all I did and I could touch 150kmph which was constant like for merely few seconds. Although there is a gps error i can assure you it does 145kmph without a pillion rider!

Bro revving is not a big deal for this machine at all. Changing of oil interval depends on which oil you use and how you ride, I mean city rides or highway long rides. Because as per my knowledge different oils behave in a different manner like few of them take high temperature well while some fail to. Make sure you take the same care for tappets adjustment/valve clearance which produces tik tik/cluck cluck sound from the engine when its warm or everytime you decelerate.

The bike can reach 150 km/hr a lot quicker if you could just go a little beyond 10500 rpm, I don't own a R15 but managed to touch 147 on the speedo just by leaning forward.
as a pulsar 220 owner I should say this bike has got a lot of potential.. thumbs up for R15

how could you go beyond RPM=10500 ? :-O there's an electronic rev limiter that cuts off the power from the engine at 10500 (actually just before 10500, just as it touches 10400. at least in my bike).

Yupp mate, like Adithya claims the engine is electronically controlled which does not let you to revv beyond 10500.

Maybe the one you tried out had ECU remapped or replaced with a custom one.

Bro if not for the initial gears I manage to push da vehicle for high rpm's(10.5k) in 4th and 5th at least.
