  • Re: Yamaha R15 V2 Issues and fitting Free Flow Exhaust system.

how often should one lube R15's clutch cable on an average ? (assume the rider being the type that often gear-shifts hard at high revs). my bike is 8500 kms old and not once i lubed its clutch cable. seems like i need to revise the manual again.

Hey brother i just stumbled upon this post for yours ..
I dont own a r15 but i had similar experience with my 200ns in my case it was throttle cable.. even after taking proper care the cable head snaped from the carb side.. new cable was a alot thicker than the existing one and plus after replacement throttle inputs have become smooth and crisp which earlier was absent..
I guess they do background checks and improve quality of spare parts or make some or the other changes in future batch of bikes to avoid such issues ..

      Who needs a stereo when you've got a throttle ? :p

Not sure you can lube the clutch cable in the same way as the throttle cable, but adjustment is there, if the cable is too tight it will snap sooner than later, adjustment wise just ensure you have a little free play on the clutch lever.

          2. Can't see it, most probably it's a bung for an O2 sensor, useful if you set up on a dyno or road using wideband. Not much help on the stock ecu, unless you had access to the yamaha fid tool.
          3. No, unless you are running too lean, keep the db killer in, if it hesitates you'll need to enrich the afr.
          4. Up to you, many of us prefer Motul 300v 15w 50
          5. Oil change due most likely. Fully synth and it will be very slick for gear changes.

Engine oil is changed at either a time or distance interval, whichever comes first.
          ...

Thank you very much Sir for your valuable input.

Not "still" - it's because of it .

Your bike's clutch cable is of the friction-free type . These cables have some kind of anti-friction material coating or layer inside the cable casing . Usually this is PTFE or some other polymer . These cables are designed to run dry , and are never to be oiled . Once you oil them , the anti-friction material inside detaches and jams the cable operation . The cable becomes hard to move and soon breaks .
While installing , use black grease ( not any lithium based grease ) on the end nipples and end part where the inner cable is exposed . Never lube the cable in any way that lets any oil or grease etc inside the casing .
            Sorry for late reply .

@stefanm - yes mate, some free play should always be there in clutch, throttle and brake cables. @Pinaki - thanks for that important info sirjee, good to know clutch cable doesnt need any lubrication ever. finally there's some things that dont need lubrication to run properly. i wish that was true for the chain and sprockets as well in this high tech era of 21st century :P

Actually by lubing, I meant that I used to apply grease on the joint where the clutch cable connects to the clutch lever and also on the other end i.e at the clutch return spring! Ive seen people at the svc apply used engine oil at the lever and inside As i said earlier, I've been applying grease at both the ends and never ever at the cable! I actually thought that the reason why cable broke off at the place where it bends at the handlebar was due to lack of lubrication but reading your reply gave me a sort of relief But again how could this happen? And i also forgot to mention that the clutch return spring broke off too a few hundred kms ago. The mech's said that it is given just to bring back the clutch to its normal position after releasing and it wouldn't be much of a problem but it can only be replaced when changing the clutch! And here my bike is just at 11k kms!

I am trying to install a phone mount for the handle bar..
The problem is can I weld a steel plate to the handle, will the weld hold? The frame isn't steel.. Will it cause a problem? Has anyone tried? Need help..

It's ok to apply grease at the end nipples and exposed bits of inner cable at both ends . It's also good to take out the hand lever from time to time , clean it and grease the pivot points . Both ends of the cable has rubber part , so don't use white lithium based grease . Lithium grease destroys rubber .

I can't know for sure how it happened to your bike , but I am guessing that some duffer at the ASC oiled your cables during service while you were not watching . Your symptoms are typical of oiled friction-free cables . Breakage of return spring may be related to using extra force to move the jammed cable .

Earlier friction-free cables ( of hero-honda at least ) used to come with a warning on the package that they are not to be oiled / greased . Nowadays that warning has disappeared from the packages . Most service center guys are not aware of it either . From my personal experience ( of suffering jam & early breakage , similar to yours ) - Clutch cable - don't lube , Throttle cable - don't lube . Speedo cables - must lube (grease) fully once a year , front brake cable - not sure - so I leave that alone .

Clutch return spring can be replaced easily . The clutch side crankcase cover may be needed to open , in which case a paper gasket costing around Rs 30 is needed and you'll need to drain all oil . So better done during an oil change . Without return spring , the bike may get stuck at half-clutch and burn the plates soon .

Search through the DIY section. I think there is a DIY on this topic.
