  • Idle RPM & Warm up Questions

Guys I read in the manual that the idle RPM should be between 1350-1400rpm
Mine on cold starting is between 1100-1200RPM i.e it keeps fluttering between the twon while I warm up the bike till the temperature bar reaches the 4th Bar.
Thereafter I haven't paid attention to the RPM.
Just wanted to know if anyone here was experiencing something different and if there is anyway to actually change the RPM setting?

Also do we need to warm up the engine to the 4th bar of the temperature bar everytime? Or is it alright to do just one warm up at the start of the day.
Speed, it seems to me, provides the one genuinely modern pleasure.

Warm up till one bar is enough .. ride calmly till the temp reaches 4 bars ( below 4000rpm ) , from then on you can ride it normally ..
      Mine idles between 1500 - 2000 rpm .
Rpm setting can be done only with diagnostic tool at svc ...

same is with my bike. Idles at 1100-1200 rpms.
        no worries.

Oh Thank God! So I take it you get the crisp two stroke rorty exhaust note just like me.

So even though the manual mentions 1350-1450rpm as idle speed? Aren't we running lean if it stays at 1100-1200rpm? I haven't checked what the rpm idle speed sits at when the engine is heated up properly, what about you? Any change in idle speed when the engine is warm or hot?

well what are the odds!!...Sunday today and i got back from 80+km short all mountain trip.
Radiator fan kicked in twice. But the rpms even at that temp was the same. 1100-1200rpm.

I was pulling myself back but did 60kmph @5500 rpms(still in run-in). 15 days now duked and 730kms done now....service up now at 750mark. Everythng is fine. Not a single thing out of track. Chain started to sound today. Will get d slack fixed tomorrow on return from office.

Buddy, duke has a FI engine. So there is nothing like running lean or rich. I don't knoe if Duke has a Idle RPM Screw. If it's there, then you can adjust the same.

@Others, I am facing a strange problem in my NS, and some of the NS-ians suggested that the issue is there in Duke as well. So please, can all you guys confirm??

Issue - The throttle response behaves weird at the 2k RPM level on my NS.
On slight twist of the throttle, the response seems to be stuck at 2k level for about 2seconds (as if not getting adequate fuel) and then suddenly it pulls, and pulls REALLY FAST (kindda sudden acceleration) upto 3-4k and after that the response becomes linear and smooth.

I notice this while riding, and also while throttling while the bike is in neutral.
              sigpic
Relationships change, evolve, and it goes deep.
Only thing I can say - "The storm is coming"

I have never experience that in my bike and have not heard about this issue from other Duke owners either.
Do check the air filter , if it is clogged and/or whether your bike is running lean or too rich.

                • Hello all,
Yesterday I got delivery of my Duke. I feel its awesome bike. In 2 days of driving my bike went from some muddy patches and I could see lot of mud splashed on radiator... it felt like radiator could be easily blocked by that mud. Is this issue of any concern?
Also my bike is not registered yet, so for how many kilometers I can drive on temperory no.?

That is very important info on first page. Almost everything a newbee like me wants to know. Thank you very much Debashish.

I had the same concern. The answer I got from Bajaj was - upto 70% of radiator covered in mud is still fine. You can buy the spray used by barbers & use a brush to clean it in monsoons. else no issues.

I heard different figures from cops in Pune. Ranging from 30 to 150 . No definitive answer. How come KTM gave you the bike without registration?

depends on city to city bro. Here the policemen are not too strict and also RTO is going through a strike regarding reservation etc. So what the heck... ive done 700kms now. Without Plate No and RC.
I guess you have the full leverage to roam around untill the paper work etc gets completed by RTO.

                      question ppl
while riding long engine heats up and then downhill in neutral i let the engine idle in order to let the coolant flow through radiator and allow engine to cool. I cant simply turn engine off downhill at high temperatures. Coz the coolant needa to flow in order to cool.
So at what rate does coolant flow?
While driving at 4-5k rpms or even higher does the rate flow of cooling increases?
or it flows at same rate...and if rate flow(and thus cooling) changes with engine speed?
Or the pump speed changes with engine speed.?

Unless the vehicle in question has an electric coolant pump, the pump speed is controlled by the engine speed (pump is engine-driven). As long as the temp gauge doesn't rise into that separate three-bar section, you're ok, and the fan will start automatically to increase cooling if needed.

The manual does suggest 1350-1450 rpm but does not say when i.e. hot engine or cold engine, but we guess its hot engine.

My cold start rpm is actually around 1400-1500, but after the engine is hot it settles around 1000-1100.

Ok. SO I will not worry about the radiator for time being. I asked them to give me bike immediately after payment because my dad was coming to Pune and I wanted to show him the bike.
