      • Got Duke'd today..

Sorry for long post, but cant stop myself posting these.

I am 25 and this is my first bike ever, in-fact this is first bike in my family. I don't have much experience in riding bikes. Till date have not driven more than 200km in my life on a geared vehicle, although i own a Kinetic Nova which I have driven extensively. Few months back i.e. around December, i came across this bike on internet and I immediately fell in love with the bike. Soon found that it was going to be released on 3 Jan 2012. Got excited and started talks at home regarding bike purchase. Got lot of resistance from home. There were arguments like "U haven't driven much,What will u do with such a high power bike", "After all its a 2 wheeler, why you want to go for such a expensive bike". Upon seeing the pics of bike my parents said that "its a racing bike as there is too much clearance between pillion seat and rear Tyre.":S and etc etc. The postponement of bike release and the discussion threads of this bike on xbhp and other forums really helped me a lot in gaining the information required for buttering and informing my parents. Finally after (2)months of persistence i got my parents agreement and they were happy too upon finding that this bike is really gr8 and offers so much compared to other bikes. After getting nod from parents i was double excited.

Now finally the wait is over. I went to chennai KTM showroom to collect the bike today evening. One guy was taking the delivery when i reached there and left as soon as i entered. Went inside the showroom and on talking the showroom person, he leaded me to the basement where the delivery process was being done. The person there did some paperwork, handed over the owner's manual and bike papers to me. He also gave a small talk on the regular stuffs like servicing, smart-card, bike details, RPM limiter, console etc. The odo was showing 43kms. On asking the person, he told it was taken to RTO for registeration. I got little suspicious, but didn't investigate it further. They had filled the bike with 5 litres of petrol and advised me to keep atleast 3 litres in the tank. Upon asking how would i know that 3 litres of petrol is left? , he said dont let the fuel indicator fall in the last square. Triangle was for reserve. Currently the fuel indicator was in third square. After all formalities were done, the bike keys were handed over to me, my friend took some snaps and we were ready to go.

I was accompanied by my friend, who also had a close look at the bike and gave the green signal. When i tried to sit on the bike i noticed that I was having a difficulty in reaching the ground (my hieght is around 5'10"). On the Test drive bike i was able to reach the ground comfortably. Thought it's ok for now and if there is any major problem will change the setting of rear suspension in the coming days. We soon took off, but even before crossing approx 300m and my friend(who was on his bike) stopped me and told that the chain was lose. We immediately went back to showroom. The mechanic saw the chain and he also agreed that the chain was lose. He immediately took the bike inside and removed the slackness in chain. In the meantime i told him to change the preload of the rear suspension. It was previously in 3 setting and i got it changed to 4. Then i tried to sit again on the bike and now it was perfect, as i was able to reach the ground comfortably. BTW I am around 70kgs. Now it looked like as if the bike was designed for me.

We again took off. But it was one of those days in chennai when the traffic on roads was at peak. My house is in Anna Nagar and showroom is in Adyar. Decided to go via marina beach and Poonamalle High road as they are quite wide roads and i expected them to be empty. But due to peak traffic time and also due to lot of one-way re-routes(thanks to metro construction) the distance to home became 28km(checked on odo and google maps at home) and it took around more than 1 and half hour to reach home. But the real surprise was that i didn't feel any back-pain or butt ache. The only thing that was paining were the palms as there was lot of neck to neck traffic and lot of start-stops of the bike. The hard thing was to control bike in the low gears. Lot of times (around 7-8) engine stalled due to fast release of the clutch lever. The clutch lever is really too sensitive, will soon get used to it, or may be it was the traffic and wont be much of a issue on free roads. About neutral gear, It is really tricky to find the neutral gear. So many times i wanted to give my left palm rest at signals by getting into neutral but by time i used to find neutral gear it was time to take off. Just before reaching home the console told me that bike has come to reserve and i was like WTF , the showroom people had just put 5L of petrol in it. May be 3 litres is when the fuel indicator starts showing indication for filling the tank. Finally after a long time i reached home. My friends were waiting for me at home as they knew i was bringing the bike. Had some discussions with them. They tried to fiddle with console after restarting the bike. To my surprise, the console now showed one bar of fuel i.e the bike was not in reserve. Anyways will be filling tank soon.

As i was riding the 3-4 gears most of the time, the engine did get heated up. The radiator fan started many times throwing hot air on my legs. After reaching home i looked at console. The trip meter was showing 28km and it also showed me a reading of 18 kmpl, which was expected as i driving in low gears and lot of stoppages at signals. On the way home lot of people were curious about the bike. Many were asking the price, mileage etc. One guy even asked me the showroom address for booking the bike.

Will try a better drive tomorrow in daytime and on free roads. Will paint chennai city in Orange Colour... HAPPY HOLI in advance.. Overall, felt really good upon reaching home as i was still feeling fresh and not at all tired.

Do any Bangalore Duke owners remember the Odometer reading on the bike when they took delivery?

            • They could've been testing the bike for their own learning at the customer's expense. No way to tell.

When i got my Ninja, all Ninjas came with a 30 +- a few kms reading. The bikes were tested before being crated out of the company, this was verified by others and no other person would ride the bike after it reaches the dealer. Even the crate was opened in front of me.

              • Good news

This is gonna be good news for every KTM Owner in MUMBAI staying Between Bandra and Dadar...I spoke to a Sai Service Rep and he confirmed to Me that in a month and a half they would be moving their operations to Bandra West and under the KTM moniker!!! And would ONLY SPECIALIZE in the Service and Repair of KTM Motorcycles!!! So it is true the Bajaj's and Kwackers get serviced separately from the KTM's, I like that, it shows some co-ordination :-)
Speed, it seems to me, provides the one genuinely modern pleasure.

I got mine with 28kms on it...But I have no complaints from the Engine it's really a tight vibe free powerhouse!!! I have never felt so confident on a bike like I do with the KTM it's really hard to put the cover on the bike before I sleep at night :-D I always wanna take one last ride...

Thanks for replying & Any specific things to check during the delivery of the duke at the showroom ?

Anyone know how many liters are in the tank when the bike goes into reserve?

                      • Got mine delivered yesterday. Straight to auto-service after the formalities & prayers to get the paint protection film on the tank & front fender also got the chain adjusted.

It has been fun filled 50+ km so far, riding in the city traffic doesnt seem to be a problem now (may be for a few days till the new bike feel withers off). The engine does gets heated up in the bumper to bumper Bangalore traffic, will have to wait till weekend to see how it feel on the highway.

It's a fuel injected bike, it doesn't have a fuel knob.

5xx INR for the tank protection & its nothing like teflon coating.
It is a protection layer a thin but strong sheet of transparent sticker covering the area where the tank pad goes only difference being it covers more surface than a tank-pad will. Didn't like how a tank pad will reduce the orange on the tank so went for 3M PPF

Edit: IIRC there is CBR owner who has put a pic of the same in the ownership thread.
