• Re: KTM 200 Duke

Hi guys,
I currently own a P220 and planning to go for the D200.
I had some questions before going for the kill, as KTM is sorta part of Bajaj :
*How is the after sale service? Is it at least a little better than Bajaj? (By better i mean, Service guys need to be knowledgeable, unlike the Bajaj guys who have no idea how a engine works)
*I am really concerned about the reliability of the engine, as i would be using it for a pretty long time. Is reliability of the engine at least a little better than Bajaj engines?
*Duke requires the 91Octane petrol, and usually duke'ees fill the petrol at Shell. But i have seen guys riding to Ladakh, where would they get Shell petrol there? Sorry i don't have much knowledge on the types of petrol, please advise.
*Fuel efficiency? heard it gives 30-35kmpl, how much do you guys get?
*The only pillion that would ride with me is my fiance, who is not on the heavier side. Non duke owners will always try to criticize about the duke's pillion seat calling it as non-existing, but what are your opinions regarding the pillion seat?
*Is the Onroad price in Bangalore 1.53 lakhs?

Unfortunately i don't have friends who own a Duke, hence asking all the questions here, please advise

It's a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider's nuts, the ride - bolts!

I am satisfied with the after sales service till now . It gets service in the pro-biking area with certified people . Atleast my service guy has shown me the certificate(expert level) for 390/220 duke .

*I am really concerned about the reliability of the engine, as i would be using it for a pretty long time. Is reliability of the engine at least a little better than Bajaj engines?

It is far superior than most of the bikes out there .It wants to get revved fast, very fast most of the times :P but has no vibrations at all . Very responsive. Light years ahead of p220 engine.

*Duke requires the 91Octane petrol, and usually duke'ees fill the petrol at Shell. But i have seen guys riding to Ladakh, where would they get Shell petrol there? Sorry i don't have much knowledge on the types of petrol, please advise.

It's good if you can get 91 . If you can't because of availability no worries at all that's what I have been told by the service guy and dealers. But do fill it with 91 if possible . Evern for my pulsar, I have always used speed by BP or Xtra premium by Indian Oil.
*Fuel efficiency?
heard it gives 30-35kmpl, how much do you guys get?

I get around 40-51 Kmpl with speeds in between 55-65-70 . If you move faster , obviously it will go down

No ide about that , Bangalore riders will confirm that . It costed me 1.51 L in delhi

Sal, dukist AFAIK, the normal petrol sold in most of the cities is 91 RON. Xtra Premium and HP's premium are both 91 RON with additives. Speed comes/used to come in 93 RON, Speed 97 is 97 RON. Both Shell and Shell Super are also 91 RON. People prefer Shell as it is usually cleaner and less adulterated than the Desi company bunks.

Well, I have asked few petrol pump managers about normal petrol's RON and they have told me that it's 89 RON and not 91. Even confirmed through KTM's dealers and their service techs, they have said the same thing about normal petrol's rating being 89 which was 87 earlier .

If more people can confirm, would be good .

The engine is robust and reliable. Fret not! about its quality. About the fuel efficiency, well it depends on your riding style, if you ride flat out..revving it to glory, then expect 20-25kmpl-ish. If you're the relaxed kinda guy then 35-40kmpl.

And the issue about pillion seat :P ....Most of the ladies i've taken never complained about the small (non existent) seat, they just enjoyed the manic nature of the bike
P.S. you'l be grabbed onto tightly

Q. Should I use regular fuel or premium fuel? Do I get premium fuel on highways?
A. Per the current BS3/4 standards, RON 91 is the fuel standard available in the entire country on all good fuel station where they're not adulterated. RON 91 is just fine with CBR, using Speed 97 from BPCL is negligibly better.
Also check this.

I agree to everything now . I downloaded from Indian Oil's website these PDF's for gasoline .

First image is of BS4. BS 2 is not available in the country according to their website, So focusing on BS 3/BS 4. RON is 91 and so on and it's written as we can see Xtra premium has MFA , I am guessing additives only , no different RON.
+1 to that.. I bought the entire chain sprocket kit of Duke200 and got a 39T rear sprocket from a Rolon dealer... The tyre setting goes a little back but the Duke200s chain fits well.. Would suggest entire replacement than just the sprocket... :thumbup:well...in that case I guess thats the best thing to do....only I dont have any idea about rolon dealers in mumbai....goolged it but got no results...anybody got any ideas ....also anywhere else that I can get a single 39T/40T rear sprocket that would fit the D200.....the only other option is to go for the full kit of karizma/ P180 which is a pricey option...so any guidance will be welcome from D200 owners in mumbai..thanx

Just thought of sharing this idea of using the rear tire hugger support as a makeshift center stand for the 200 Duke. I was thinking about adding a base to the frame, but couldn't do that at this point since I am not keeping well. By the way, I am new here, and got my Duke some six months back, and there is not a single bad word to say about the bike. Well, I got my chain and sprockets changed at 6K under warranty, it was making some grinding noise.Click image for larger version

Hello everyone,
my first post on the forum finally after following it for over a year now.
Learnt a lot about my bike from you guys.
however today i got my bike serviced (2nd Paid Service) and when the mechanic drained the old engine oil he asked me why there was a low quantity.
i was surprised since i got my last oil change at that very place and i saw them fill over one litre of oil ( one whole can and more from the second which i guess hould be aroound another 400ml). on being asked how much oil has come out he said its about 600ml which i cant guarantee since he was using just some random tub and not any measuring jar or anything but since he does this everyday i assume he must be right. first thought was of oil leakage but i never noticed any leakage at my home or my office where i travel everyday anyways he refilled new oil and all is fine but my concern is how and why was the engine oil so low and what possible damage could have happened to the engine during this period? (never noticed any drastic change in performance or overheating or noise as such). Any insight would be highly helpful.
thanks in advance.
P.S. will keep an eye out for leaking engine oil from now.

If adequate amount was not poured in during your last service then you sure have noticed harshness. Also your engine might have seized with such small quantity of oil doing duty. SO my guess is right amount of oil went in and your engine has been consuming it along with petrol. Frightening really. May be your piston rings are gone and lubricant had been entering the combustion chamber. You should ask the meach to check this. But this would mean opening up the engine, which in my experience may not be a good idea, given the awesome skill of most Bajaj mechs. So my suggestion would be to keep an eye on the oil level everyday and see if there is a drop. If the engine was malfunctioning so much to eat 1 L of oil, then surely it'll keep on doing that and you'll notice drop in level pretty soon.

I am no expert, so wait for some more suggestions

Possible but wouldn't damaged rings mean white smoke (due to the oil burning and should also smell funny i guess) or does Motul 7100 burn with no white smoke? i sure hope to not have damaged my piston rings. Anyways will keep an eye out for the engine oil level. Thanks.
P.S. what could be the possible reasons to damage the rings? would it be covered under warranty?

Lately my bike seems to be shutting down (engine cuts off) a lot while riding. Even from 4th gear. I keep observing my RPMs, they look normal, but bike shuts down randomly. Is t due to my riding style or could there be any other possible reason? I guess it started within past week with bike shutting down at least twice (can be more) on one way ride to home or office. Also, observing the same during pickups, I need to pull more throttle now in order to pick up else the bike shuts down. :S

Check Spark Plug condition. Check for blockage near the Suction port.
