Re: KTM 200 Duke
Hi Arvind95 ,
Turned out my engine gasket was blown and oil was leaking from the head. The mechanic said that this was due to incorrect clutch setting (which he himself had set during the last service!). Now,the acceleration has improved somewhat(Either it is still not up to the mark or I have gotten used to it). Also, turns out the clatter is there in every bike... listened to two other brand new dukes, same clatter from the engine.
Unfortunately, the exhaust still does not sound right. The exhaust has lost its deep hollow burble and now it is a shallower, harsh noise.

They will only need to open the cam coverOriginally posted by wallpapers123 View PostOut of curiosity, for replacing the shims, would they have to open the 2nd half of the engine head or is it possible to do the task just by opening the top most part of the engine head..??

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Yep I did observe that sound change a day back when I had been to a Bajaj-KTM svc to get my 200ns serviced. There were a bunch of brand new 200 dukes and ns's waiting for delivery. My friend's 2 yr old d200 sounds pretty deep. Same case with the 200ns, newer ones sound like theyve been mellowed down. My friend rode the new duke and said it feels neutered but more refined. Same was observed with a new 200ns as well. Maybe Bajaj-KTM are detuning their products a wee bit intending to improve running life and fuel efficiency.Originally posted by PzZulqar View PostUnfortunately, the exhaust still does not sound right. the exhaust note just mellows down with time. Was the case with my bike. I font think the newer ones would have a lesser note than a 2 year old bike. The deep throaty signature vanishes with time. Any new duke would have that 'metallic' tone in the note. The old ones would be pretty mutedThe hero always RIDES into the sunset!

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Well, actually we are sailing in the same boat...my bike was 2700 on the odo and sounded fine...after doing a 1100Km trip, the sound and performance to some extent has changed dramatically.Originally posted by Arvind95 View PostMy duke 200 ran around 2500kms. My engine sound has changed so much. That refined stock sound is not there anymore...I'm taking it to the SVC anyways, I just want to know if anyone else experienced the same issue when the bike is not even 3 months old.And what might be the problem. I'm pretty sure it's not the volume settings..It sounds like something's loose in the engine or somewhere under the tank. I'm so worried...Please reply ASAP.

Bro, I'm facing the exact same problem as yours.I'm taking it to the SVC tomo.was your problem rectified?why is there a clatter sound in the engine? I'm experiencing a slight lag in the performance too..Any help from your side will be greatly appreciated.
There is a tinge of metallic sound in the exhaust note, which is irritating me....and I feel the pickup in initial rmps has decreased a lot. For instance, if I hold the throtle at 35kmph in 3rd gear there is a ghrrr type sound and it seems to be coming from the exhaust....this is the closest I can get in explaining it....and I am very surprized that sound has appeared immediately after doing a long ride and I am seriously fearing that with each long ride, bike will loose on its performance.Last edited by AkshayA; 07-19-2014, 03:06 AM.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Thankyou so much bro.Originally posted by Pizzaboi View PostThe shims help keep the valve clearance within the tolerances. Sometimes to prevent the valves from burning off, they use a slightly smaller shim, as the engine wear continues the clearance increases, the clattering sound is of the valve not seating properly. Replacing the shims is done for free in the SVC and should not take more than 30 min.
I'll get back to you after I get my problem rectified at the SVC

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Yeahh, the same fear haunts me every time I take my bike past 100.. If they want me to ride in the 60's and 70's, seriously why would I go for duke? I would've went for some other bike. I was in love with the old metallic sound and the aggressiveness...After the first service I noticed my bike lack that aggressiveness but the ride was smooth...Originally posted by AkshayA View PostWell, actually we are sailing in the same boat...my bike was 2700 on the odo and sounded fine...after doing a 1100Km trip, the sound and performance to some extent has changed dramatically.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Brand new duke with the clatter sound? That's really bad.. That sound is what makes KTM differ from the others. If it vanishes completely. That's more like the ktm's loosing their uniqueness...Today, I checked my exhaust note with that of a new 2 weeks old duke. There was so much difference. It sounded like my 2 months old duke wasn't healthy at all..Originally posted by PzZulqar View PostHi Arvind95 ,

That is how my bike sounds after 2 years of trashing it to bits. It no longer even sounds anything close to a KTM but it still runs trouble free

Re: KTM 200 Duke
Check the way your clutch is setup , I have noticed that to keep people from complaining about a heavy clutch they keep it relatively loose.Originally posted by Arvind95 View PostYeahh, the same fear haunts me every time I take my bike past 100.. and as far as the run in is concerned, I'm a firm believer of do what ever you want with the bike as long as it is nicely warmed up. I never stuck to their recommended RPMs. I did however use mineral oil (Bajaj DTSi oil) for the run in and drained it twice, as soon as I hit 1500kms I switched to a fully synthetic. 300v worked brilliantly for me.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
I'll take it to the SVC on Monday.. And now it sounds like a share auto.. Even strangers around me started enquiring about the sound :/ which embarrasses me a lot... My tank and the footpegs are literally vibrating which never happened before even in the top notch (130+).Originally posted by Pizzaboi View PostCheck the way your clutch is setup , I have noticed that to keep people from complaining about a heavy clutch they keep it relatively loose.

Re: KTM 200 Duke
With so many people complaining about the exhaust note of Duke mellowing down over time.. Am Just wondering when would be the ideal time for changing to custom exhaust? I personally liked the sound ofOriginally posted by Pizzaboi View Post
1. Remus roxx
2. Leovince cobra
3. Apkrapovic
In that order.. They sound like choppers hanging in air with that sound..
What are your thoughts?

Re: KTM 200 Duke
No one I know replaced.. But GPR deeptone seems pretty reasonable price.. Here's the link that I came across for all the exhaust options..Originally posted by Arvind95 View PostI'd love to replace the exhaust too.. But they are so much expensive..Anybody you know, replaced it? How is the feedback?
