            • Hello All!

Another Sunday & another ride, Here's my experience regarding the same.

After last week's misadventure, I was determined to do a lot more research for this week's ride and finally decided on 3 places. Here's the route I planned.

              1. Karla Caves: I had heard a lot about these caves and since it was relatively close by, so decided to visit. I started from home around 8 AM, took the NH4 towards Mumbai and soon was out on the open highway. The road was superb as usual, low traffic and I was happy maintaining speeds around 70~75 kmph. As the bike is still running in, I decided not to push it, and just cruised on the highway. Soon enough, I reached karla, took the deviation and after a steep climb, reached the parking spot. After paying my respects at the ekvira temple (had read about this too!) I started the climb up towards the caves. A lot of shops were littered alongside the route as there was some temple on the top. A majority of the crowd had come to see the temple instead of the caves! Finally, after a 15 minute climb, I reached the top, bought the entry ticket (5 bucks) and went inside. The cave is just fantastic, the sculptures are very well maintained and there is no information regarding the history of the place. I had expected that something would be there but no. To think that these caves were made over 2000 years ago, and with the level of intricacy and architecture that too with the simplistic tools available during that age, is just astounding. These caves are a true testament to what man can achieve if required and came away mightily impressed. After going around the place, I made my descent towards the parking and started my journey towards my next destination.

              2. Lion's point: I wanted to have some riding in the twisties and came to know about this point. Started my journey from Karla, took the NH4 again towards mumbai and after reaching lonavala, I took the dattawadi road towards aamby valley city. The roads around lonavala were not very good and after a couple of turns the road became just magnificent. It was a really amazing feeling to open up the bike on such good roads and that too around twisties!! Found a lot of high end cars going the other way and a few of the drivers even pointed at me to their passengers I'm sure they must've been thinking this guy must be having a lot of fun. And trust me, I was. The duke is just perfect in these conditions and I enjoyed it to no end. I finally reached the point fairly quickly and found a few tourists there. Also met a couple of bullet riders who came over to ask me if I had painted the bike black they did not know that the bike came in this color now and I told them regarding the same. they left and I took a couple of pictures of the vistas offered. The view was breathtaking and I can only imagine how the place would look during the monsoon. Made a mental note that I should come back here during the rains just for the views. And so, I started towards my last destination before going back home.

              3. Mulshi (Outskirts): I continued on the road and soon found myself at a junction of sorts where the road split two ways. Asked a person who was sitting nearby and he asked me to take the right one, I thanked him and continued along. After just a km or so, The road started deteriorating and soon, it was just a single lane, not even enough to accomodate a car! the road condition was bad and I could not go beyond even 30 kmph. Also, it was completely deserted, no vilages, no buildings around. Found a few bikers coming the opposite way after a while and asked them regarding the direction. THey said I had taken the wrong road and that I missed the earlier junction around 15 kms ago!! I was so frustrated, turned around immediately to find the correct route and also, mentally I was a bit relaxed because quite frankly, that road was just scary!. Finally, I reached the proper junction and took the road towards mulshi. Again, after a few kms, to my horror, the road just became a pile of rocks strewn across the path!!! reconfirmed the route with some locals and they told me it would take atleast 1.5 hrs to reach mulshi and that the road was pretty bad. I cursed my luck and continued on the path which was getting worse by the minute. I was literally doing 15kmph and to top it all, i was really afraid of all the sharp stones as to not get a puncture! Tip toed my way along and finally the road was better again, but this time, it was strewn with ash!! I knew the bike was going to have a tough time stopping on this surface and I did not get carried away. After a couple of turns, all of a sudden, a truck was just standing on the middle of the road! and I applied the rear brake, but the tyre just did not grip!!! Somehow, instinctively, I took to the other side of the truck and managed to get the bike under control. I was so relieved I did not have a fall, cos it was very very easy to do so! After a few more kms of careful riding on the ash road, it got worse again!! the stones were back and again, speed reduced. I was getting very worried about the bike as it was really hot and the engine was running from a long time and also, the suspension was taking a big big beating. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, I reached the outskirts of mulshi, and stopped the bike for a few mins and took a break. All the people around were curious as usual and before they could come and ask uncomfortable questions (price, mileage) I sped off towards pune. The road was in a good shape, moderate traffic and finally I was at the outskirts of the city in no time.

Found my way home, parked the bike, made a quick inspection, and thankfully, nothing was wrong or out of place. I was just really lucky that I came away with no problems!! I am delighted with the bike and now, after filling the tank, my calculated average is 45 kmpl!! (manual calculation) I'm just really amazed and yes even though, I'm more like a sedate rider, this mileage figure is just astounding for me.

              Regards!

                          • Facing some problem with my Dukie. I can notice some scrapping sound from the rear part of my 200km old bike while riding it (May be from brakes or from the chain). Does any one know about this? Suggest me.

According to me, one from these three things might create a sound.
                              1. Rear Disc pads might be Faulty.
                              2. A Faulty Wheel bearing.
                              3. Dry or loose & unlubed drive chain.

Thanks, but I am worried now. What will you suggest me, whether to go to the service center and fix it by now or else wait till my 1st service period comes?
