My bike came to showroom yesterday
I did a PDI check even though no delivery till atleast Monday.
All was ok except for couple of things.
    1. The front and rear brake levers had very little play. Hardly some mm. Is this normal for 390?
    2. The coolant level was midway between max and min. Should it be nearer max?

Any owners can answer these for me?

Advance wishes on your new ride mate . 1) Yes its normal. Infact the clutch too will have no play. (2) If it is at max level, when the Engine temp goes up, the coolant expands. Thereby, you will have leakage. Same happened with me, they kept the level just above min and everything was fine

        Thanks

Forgot one more thing, when I turned On the key, the engine diagnosis warning lamp (top row second from left) was continuously glowing orange.
The light switched off when I started the bike. Is this fine?

Absolutely fine. Once the ROUTINE CHECK is done, you will be left with 'N'(if you are), ABS, Engine Check (as said by you its engine diagnosis) and Warning Sign (if applicable, like Side Stand, Low fuel etc...) Once you start and move there will be none

Got my beast today from lower parel outlet after waiting for almost 135days.
The buying experience ws not that great. Extremely frustrating.
But when I thumbed the starter, all my frustraion went away and I said to myself ' It was worth the wait'. .

LOL. It does help a lot during regular wash and chain clean. But it is not apt replacement for paddock stand. Paddock stand has its own advantages.

There is nothing to get surprised here or in fact a shock. I knew one day Bajaj's compromise on quality will come to light and here it is. In all my life I have heard of just one bike whose alloys managed to break at 60kmph and it was the Duke 200. Now the 390 is also going the same way. Here shyguy46 was riding alone and you all know what happened. What would have been the case if he was riding with a pillion? Bajaj is a manufacturer who knows Indian road conditions better than KTM/anyone and the only one manufacturer who never learn from their mistakes. And really how many here are willing to call this a 'niggle'? The issue happened earlier on so many Duke 200s and I haven't seen any improvement in the quality of the alloys so far, even on the 390. Now we have got a bike that can break its alloys on potholes. No manufacturer in the world compromises on the safety of their riders and here Bajaj is ready to go to any extent to make their bikes cheaper. After all , we can't complain them because we are getting a 44ps motorcycle with all the bells and whistles for just 2 lakhs! Now who cares if the bike has got wheels or not? In short when buying a KTM in India, one should be ready to the feel the tarmac or to get crushed by some bigger wheels.

I have heard about the initial batch of FZs having the same issue but they were rectified well in the followed batches by Yamaha. But here fitting the same alloys on the heavier 390 wasn't apt.
It is not wise to single out a incident and generalize it.

I have cases where FZ, R15, Karizma, 200 Duke and Pulsar braking/cracking their alloys.

In fact I am bit of a rash rider (not in literal sense) and have taken my 390 on loads of Monsoon hit roads filled with potholes in Hyderabad. Everyday, after coming back home I check for any bends or cracks. The bikes especially FZ, 200 and 390 have low profile tires and the chances are higher that they get cracked under heavy impact.

Though I am pretty much familiar with Bajaj's perspective towards quality, but yet to judge KTM on the same. 390 is a new bike and it will take time to settle. Every new bike has almost initial niggles and I am sure KTM is working on that. Its just that how religiously Bajaj will do it.

Considering the price 390 comes, I am not worried about the loose wires, tapes coming loose, improper finishing on hand guards and rough edges at headlight and footpeg areas. All these are not at least deal breakers for me. Engine and chassis has been performing well and that what matters.

Lets not jump on to conclusions so early and give it some time.

Ok. Finally got around to making the few changes i wanted to..So for folks (or as someone said, "uncles" ) out there like me who found the orange wheels and the white handguards a little loud here goes ...

Alloys repainted (~Rs2500 total) and handguards given black matte sticker treatment(Rs200). I doubt the stickers will last long, but i wasn't willing to shell out more for painting them.

Did a trip to Nandi Hills today with wife. Apart from being stopped by cops four times everything else went fine. Engine breaking is a real dampener. The riding position is good, ride quality is good, vibes are tolerable in higher gears but engine breaking-I HATE IT! It tired me out and I don't fancy riding long distances on this. Will stick to my car. I stuck to 3.5-6k rpm band for most of the ride. I didn't make too much of the 5000RPM shift indicator as the limit during running in is 7500RPM. I didn't come anywhere close to that as I was mostly cruising (or trying to) at 80-90kmph. I did touch 111kmph briefly in 6th gear. Seems to be a fuel guzzler. I did a tank full before the start of the trip and now there are only three bars left. My wife didn't find the pillion seat uncomfortable though she did say the seat is hard. You need to be active on this bike, accelerating, braking, changing gears, accelerating again. Not meant for people who want to slot in one gear build some decent speed and leave it at that. Demands too much attention! Hating the attention the bike is getting on the roads. Won't blame the people, bike does look like a whacko. Posting couple of pics, excuse the quality as it is taken from my mobile. Click image for larger version

I totally agree, you have to be super vigilant when riding this one, too much power at tap, also the best part is, it is super dooper fun, but not sure if you might get annoyed of having too much fun every day.. :-D

And yes, it is a attention magnet , a bit too much too, it gets too annoying, the orange rims and frame just shouts out to be looked and stared at.

Too many such incidents in the last few days.

BTW, a tankful to tankful method calculation returned me a figure of 36-37kmpl. 80% highway riding with almost negligent traffic. Still going to recheck once more to be sure.

There were still a few ppl staring, but i think that was more because i was all geared up.
