  • Impressions: After the first 1000kms

Been following the thread silently, and here are my thoughts after the run-in period:

    Pros:
Excellent acceleration (this bike is not meant for smooth acceleration, rather maxing out at every gear), and good high speed stability at cruising speeds (120kph).
The suspension is generally hard, but handling is top notch and provides extra confidence. I am easily riding 20-30% faster in everyday conditions over my old bike (Apache 180)
Excellent tires and good braking (though rear seems to engage fully at even the slightest touch)

    Cons:
The gear box is clunky at best. The first three gears are really clunky (and engages with a scary thud), 4th and above is generally smooth. The Apache had much better shifts (and I wonder how a Honda must feel considering that it has the best gearboxes... generally speaking). Have heard that it will get smoother with time, but as of now...
Unreliable fuel gauge. Goes from half to low fuel suddenly (I generally reset a trip meter at every fill and keep an eye out for the 200km mark.) I get about 220 kms from about 9l of fuel.

    Issues:
The engine shuts off randomly while shifting especially at lower gears. I am yet to figure out the reason (and a way to reproduce it. Happens randomly). I have spoken to the ASS but they are not aware of any such problems. This might be a huge problem if it happens at higher speeds (it did happen to be once when I shifted down from 5th to 4th while riding at 70kph. Thankfully the clutch was engaged and pressing the starter immediately brought the engine back to life and I escaped. It was especially scary since I was in an expressway with heavy traffic.)

There is a minor oil leakage from one of the engine seals, and the head gasket needs replacement. But the spares are not available (wtf!). The ASS assured me that it is not a huge problem since the leakage is little, and there is nothing to worry about. It will be replaced later.

Many wires are exposed and only covered by tapes. Unlikely they will last long. Guess will have to be on constant lookout, since if the electricals fail the bike will not go anywhere.

About the ASS, I was at one of the more recommended ASS (Bagga Link, Kirti Nagar, Delhi). At best the service is decent, but as usual the mechanic simply refuses to listen to your problems and will only try and escape with the regular oil change, chain tightening and air filter cleaning. They try to put every problem under the carpet. However, the manager is quite nice and attends to issues.

The side stand has a censor that turns the engine off if a gear is applied. It could be this sensor causing the problem. I have read on other Duke forums, where owners have bypassed this sensor, because it was causing problems like you have mentioned.

The same goes with my 390 also... mine gives out creaky noises like some plastics are getting scratched (the sound is like of when chain gets scratched against chain guard ,although i have tightened my chain tension) from somewhere below the radiator on minor ups n downs on road , i took it to ASS and he said has no idea where it is coming from ! The ASS guy suggested me to observe and narrow it down myself if possible which was quite unexpected reply from him :|
If anyone has this kind of problem please let me know ! I contacted Kothrud, Pune's service center for support !

        ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

thanks for info i ll check it OUT !

Those are your in-house made ones right ? Very good quality by the looks of them. Hows the Radiator grill going?

I had this engine shutdown thing when the fuel was scarily low on my 390. Happened thrice when I had to hard brake. But when braked normally it went fine. I guess it might be because of fuel level.

                Never happened again.

For those who are having stalling issues during gear changes, please try tightening the throttle cable play. I have had a stall at low speed and the wheel did lock up on the second day. I later realized that this was because of too much play in the throttle cable where I thought I was giving gas but the throttle was actually at idle and hence the gear change stalling at idle. Please be careful not to tighten it too much because then you will still have throttle open even when braking which is disaster.

It is nice to roll your eyes on pros and cons of this great machine. Could you owners please share how effective the braking ability of this bike is, especially the ABS thing! If any of you owners rode CBR250r-ABS before, his comment will really help.

Honda swung into action almost immediately and replaced the affected parts without any hassles. Honda even sued their vendors for supplying them defective parts. CBR 250R even have a five year warranty as an option for a nominal amount . The Duke's warranty is just 30000 kms or 2 years. Bajaj knows their products well and are not ready to go beyond that. The Duke is by no means a new product to the market. The duke 200 faced an alarming number of issues but still Bajaj haven't improved anything on the bike, but opted for quick fixes or some 'jugaad'. Now the 390 is also going the same way.
There is no need for a debate here. You have two options for two lakh rupees. One is a well built and engineered 250cc 25 bhp motorcycle and the other is a well engineered but pathetically built 375cc 44 bhp motorcycle. Its just like making a Bugatti Veyron in a farmhouse. Quality always comes at a price.
What jugaad are you talking about?

Well built and engineered...? Well, I've seen its engine open. On Facebook. And still that doesn't say a thing, if you know how to maintain a bike.
And, if you're so sure, then why didn't you get a Honda?

And I am pretty sure that 2 years later, a 2013 CBR250R would easily overtake a 2013 Duke 390 because CBR still makes 25 bhp while the duke makes a humble 22. I don't know when will Bajaj learn we need well made proper motorcycles. Service centers are not the best holiday destinations we would like to visit often.
2 years later? Are you kidding me? CBR still easily overtakes even today, (Condition: a calm Duke rider V/s a jealous insecure CBR rider.)
In fact, it happened right here in my city. A CBR 250 guy just got insecure and starting revving the hell off behind me... I was wondering what all this noise behind me is. But, I just wasn't in the mood. And he won!! Victory for the CBR! So why wait 2 years, why don't these guys win right now?

Jokes apart, you believe Duke will make 22 bhp? They're just fictional assumptions. Duke 200 owners will confirm this anyways I guess.

By the way buddy, I also own a 6 years old Pulsar 180 UG3. It was made to be a commuter... Then why did it survive the long rides and 10 krpm blasts I put it through?! (If Bajaj is as bad as you say it is). 10,000 rpm for a 2007 Bajaj engine is not a joke. And it still performs well, except for certain issues with the exhaust which is not a big deal. They never screwed the engine.

My review is coming up guys.... I'll focus on the Duke 390's weak points too, and why they happen...

I got all the three rides,a 2002 pulsar180, a 2012 duke200( sold for duke390),a2013 duke390. My pulsar still cross triple digit without any fuss.10k rpm is so sweet without any sweat.
Duke200 rode it for 14k kms, loved that machine it's awesome. Still loving the pop of wheelies and stoppies.
Duke390, crossing 1k kms, first service done, fantastic machine. Small niggles in the 200 had been rectified. Giving more review soooooon.now enjoying withmy 390..
