After completing 1000+ Kms, 70 kmph is good for shifting to 6th, bike will start pulling from standstill in 2nd...

Its a KTM engine, so dont worry much about the run in as stated by lot of stupid articles on the net, keep it below 7500 RPM, use lot of engine braking in 2nd gear, Dont ride at constant speed, keep varying the throttle...

No need to change the oil before the first service, you can if you have lot of money to waste...

I generally don't engage 6th below 110. Agree that around 80 on 6th will give you maximum mileage, but, who wants maximum mileage on a performance bike? For mileage I would just use my old bike.

Somehow i feel the 390 engine feels stressed at 80km/h in 6th gear. Is this correct or is it just my paranoia??
As you do a couple thousand more km, you will be able to engage the 6th at 55-60, but seriously, where is the Dukeism in that? It loves to revv so I revv it all the way to redline now (except 6th).

I kept changing the speeds/rpms as it is better for run in, was changing between 70-100+ throughout and what a pleasure this bike is on highways! I envy all you guys who completed run in!! Must be so much fun for you all!

My friend @plasmabhai test rode for few kms on highways & I shouldve recorded the video of what he had to say after he stopped!! Wouldve gone viral atleast amongst 390 owners

Btw, need help with few things here,
      1. There was little coolant sprayed around coolant cap near fuel tank, was it due to loose cap? I did tighten it a little later. Also the coolant level is close to max, maybe a little more. Did this happen because coolant was too much?
      2. Fuel indicator was showing two bars and in span of 10kms it started showing low fuel, I guess it is unreliable as many of you reported. The bike ran 220kms for 8 litres in which 70+kms was city and rest was highways, I guess this is expected figure right?
      3. I think the chain is already loose , the slack is around 1 cm when kept on side stand which is too much according to manual, have to get it adjusted soon.
I think the coolant level should be closer to minimum level than max as the coolant expands, a lot. Check the level once the engine has cooled down, if it is above max or near that level, then probably the excess will flow out some more.
Fuel indicator is a bit unreliable especially on a long run. It only shows correctly if you slow down for considerable amount of time or switch off the engine and then on again.
220 for 8 is a lot better than mine. Mine gives around 180 for 8 litres in city. So, I guess you can rest assured on that front. By the way don't worry about mileage on this bike unless it drops near about 10kmpl. Just enjoy the ride.

        1. The cold coolant level should be at around halfway mark between min and middle point of min-max. The coolant expands a lot on heating and it will leak.
        2. The mileage figures are around the same I get.
        3. Imo the chain is the only troublesome part of the bike. Needs oiling and adjustment quite frequently.

While 6th at 70 is also doable, the bike lacks that bit of punch which you have at 5th at 70 and get at 6th at 90 and above. I generally cruise at 6th only above 90.

6th @80 kmph should be fine but still lugs the engine so not recommended during run-in AFAIK. Lugging is the last thing you should do during run-in.

What exactly is the use of half chain cover? Do you guys think there would be any adverse effects if I get rid of it?

One use is to stop you accidently putting your leg on the chain.

It protects oil from spreading all over bike and your leg, because of it you only see oil(after lubing chain) on alloy and tyres and not all over bike

As mentioned it protects your legs from oil sludge and also protects the clothes from accidentally getting caught up in the chain. The particular areas that are likely to cause trouble are covered by the cover. You can take it out, but, it is not recommended and wont provide much benefit.

Thank You gentlemen for the education. I really didn't know that. I was planning to remove it because its quite flimsy and I suspect it rubs against the rod that runs around the tyre hugger.

@AmitRavi07 & @timuseravan, thanks guys. Will be taking it to SVC tomo to get the numbering done (reg not yet complete )and will also get the coolant and chain checked. And I am not worried about mileage and not expecting high figures either, just wanted to know if it was normal

Filled Speed97 petrol from BP today evening and that almost solves the engine knocking problem completely! Was really surprised at the improvement but it costs 104bucks/litre

Btw, few pics from today's ride, sorry for posting so many

At home, waiting to go for the ride..

                      Near Kolar..

                      At Kendatti lake..

On RTR I used to ride on these off roads without any worry, now I ride at 1st gear in less than 10kmph speeds

Cant wait for the run-in to finish now
                      Ride hard.. Ride safe.. Always!
