I heard that when different metals are in contact, due to moisture rusting can happen. Maybe this is what they are trying to fix by replacing with new front sprocket.
Even i heard about the replacement of the front sprocket but i opened my front sprocket for cleaning just 2 days back.. everything seems to be fine, no rust. My bike is from September lot and have done more than 6k kms.

We need to know the reason why they are replacing the front sprocket.

      Thanks, free stickers.
They are for KTM 200 BTW.

Awesome shot! It looks like it was clicked in a studio, with a spotlight only on the bike

It was clicked in office basement under a tubelight :P

And yes aside the fact that KTM Powerparts are priced to the moon, you can get good quality aftermarket adjustable levers in eBay and Snapdeal, they are equally good.

Check out this video, happen to see this a week back and even before getting delivery of my bike, thinking to invest in adjustable levers, after riding the 390 for a while now.

Secondly X Z or any other ZY ring, offer very slightly improved performance. O and X are practical and best, unless otherwise you want to drop your cash into KTM Powerparts' coffer.

Had a small 200 KM today to see my Duke, the newer Duke 200 comes with silver anodized chain, whereas the Duke 390 still has the good old black touch, the reason when asked was a "I don't know sir" from the Chief Mechanic there.

And I don' know if anyone has noticed this in any other newer Duke 390s or not. The front fender in my new baby, slightly extended from the prior lots, the fender is slightly lengthier at the rearward to reduce the splash on the intake scoops. I think it's a sweet design revision from Katoom.

        Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
        The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

        THE END

Btw KTM is replacing front sprocket of all 390s for free, apparently its a new design. Not sure if the number of teeth has changed or anything, if so it will make significant difference.
One guy who has April 2014 model didnt need replacement as he already had the newer one.
Got my front sprocket changed from the Goregaon svc center just now. They have been updated abt the advisory and changing the sprocket for free.

The manufacturing date on the replacement box is may 2014. The person there said it was to reduce knocking and vibration. Post installation the bike is more rideable in the 1st and 2nd gears. The initial jerkiness/violent engine braking of these gears is no more.

Overall I have mixed feelings as the bike behaves much better in traffic but I was kinda used to the way it was before.

Was your bike 2013 or 2014 model? One of my friend checked with SVC today and they told him its only for 2013 models. And going by your feedback, they have changed the number of teeth in the sprocket. (Most likely reduced by 1 teeth as you said city rideability is better).

They are always a bit funny with the updates to SVCs/Dealers regd service advisorys and prices. The sprocket itself costs around 250/- as per the box.

Mine is 2013 model, so i guess I can try my luck, but another thing, mine is a KL registered bike, wonder if they will entertain this replacement it here in KA

I dont think it should matter at all. Its a company initiated replacement, they take down your bike details (serial number etc.) on the job card for the replacement

There were some cases of the front sprocket losing alignment, coming loose, and the chain getting stuck. It was due to an alignment issue along the sprocket axis in the earlier lots. That too only in some of them. In these the sprocket would go off its fit, chain would go off the front sprocket in high speeds, and get stuck. AFAIK, this was mostly restricted to the second batch of 390s delivered in India circa early October 2013. My bike delivered mid Oct 2013 didn't have it.

I saw one of the owners in Bangalore OG reporting a reduction in the topspeed, after installing the new front replacement sprocket. Any similar observations here?

If the sprocket teeth count is same it wont cause a reduction.
but the logical explanation for that is, mot of the bikes would have already run over 5k kms with the machine , that is like almost half the life of the chain considering the amount of torque the chain has to transfer, now changing the front sprocket alone to a new one on a half dead chain and rear sprocket causes slippages or uneven distribution of power and the ride quality goes down, so does the top speed and acceleration.
The true difference of the new sprocket design can be only accelerated when anyone changes to the new sprocket set (chain, front and rear sprockets)

                                Cheers
