Overdrive did a touring test of Duke390, Inazuma and Continental GT and this is one of the point they had to say, We discovered that 105-115kmph is a good cruising speed because the 390 also returns between 30 and 33kmpl which, astonishingly enough, gives it the best tank range of the trio despite its tiny 10.5litre tank"

So who just complained here about tank range now?

My bike had this issue when it was pretty new. Probably 1000-1500kms old.
SVC changed the oil filter Cap with new one and there has been no oil leakage since then. My bike has now clocked 14200kms.

I too confirm with this view, as D390s tank range of 240kms is amongst the best when comparing high performance bikes(mid-size bikes).

In mixed terrain (multiple pass climbing/150km gravel/stony roads, awesome tarmac and plain bad roads on the Karu - Pangong - Hanle - Tsomoriri - Chumar circuit my 390 gave me 370 km on tankful to empty basis

Surprising enough, but I can confirm that...
Apart from getting the worst of 17kmpl in Bangalore traffic I have also managed to get 33 kmpl on the NH7 to Madurai.
On my way, I even managed to pull up to 18 kms when the display actually showed me 0 kms on fuel left. :P ( which btw, was scary since the kms kept dropping from 30,29,28,27... till it went on to 0) - couldn't resist from cruising at 120kmph for an hour or so, hence kept going till I found the next petrol station. :P
I guess there was more fuel left since I filled around 10 ltrs then.
The average values that I am talking about is from an android app called Mileage which calculates approximate values from every fill up I have done so far.

Did I read it right! So that was 37kmpl in that terrain? Brilliant!

You can get 17kmpl on highways as well if you ride at 140+kmph non stop And I guess that tank range indicator is reliable only on highways, in city it is very random.

                Yup
The key element is that the Duke found the terrain easy. No first/second gear slogs. Just gentle and smooth throttle inputs was good for all kinds of water crossings/gravel/sand. Also, due to slower co-riders I never exceeded 75 on the best of roads. The mileage readings were crazy. From a worst of 27kmpl while climbing Chang La to an astonishing 58 kmpl on a gentle downhill section

                  Lol.. true that...
Yep, I never rely on that indicator, it just scares the hell out of you when the kms left on the indicator starts going wild!
I usually do a full tank every 160 to 180 kms and reset the 2nd odometer when I do that, which is 6 -7 ltrs.

It may be good enough for highways only but for mixed city-highway commute, I get about 200-220 km between refills. It barely lasts a week

Getting excessively high mileage from a high revving, large cylinder (relatively) engine may not necessarily be a good thing. It Could mean that the bike is running excessively lean and could hamper the engine sooner than desired.

for me, i always fill 'full tank on side stand to full tank at side stand' and average calculation based on that (always note the odo on my phone while doing full tank). I have been constantly getting average between 26-28kmpl in city outskirts type riding (which is home to office), and between 30-32 on the highway. This is with moderately spirited riding, not too slow, not too fast. Satisfied with mileage.
Just for the sake of comparison, my C5 with 535cc engine, flat slide 32mm carb and spirited riding returns a healthy 32-33kmpl in city outskirts type riding.

I get exactly similar figures on my D390

In my city I get similar figures- maybe a tad less. My daily commute is only 11km a day. On a Delhi - Bengal run the KTM returned around 22 (I covered 1400+ km in around 20 hours)
But, the bike did behave radically different at high altitude . Was surprised very pleasantly when on a refill it turned out to be more efficient than a 200NS.
This behavior is also consistent with what I have got on my previous machines on the same terrain. On the 220 fi I generally got 33/34 while in ladakh it returned 42. Similarly the CBR gave around 30 in the city and I got 39 in Ladakh.

Not necessarily its lean, it could be efficient as well. Moreover at higher rpms they have surely made the mixture rich which is the reason for a big drop in FE in that range

At higher altitudes, FI always gives much better FE than carb since FI compensates for change in air pressure. But it also means the bike runs leaner than usual, if i am not wrong.
