• Re: Radiator Guard.

I am facing a strange problem with my bike. The coolant in the reservoir is disappearing without a trace. There are no visible residues from leaks in, around or outside the engine. Nothing to suggest a leak from any pipes. The svc guys are stumped, and I don't know whether they would be able to find a cause. Its been standing in the svc for three days. If anyone could throw some light on this problem, would be very grateful.

Also, had my first fork seal change (right one of course). The svc guys told that they had made some small changes in the way the fork seal is put and till now there has been no recurrence in all the bikes in which this change has been done. When I asked for particulars about the change, I got a vague reply, and, to top it all off, came to know that the forks only have a warranty of 10K kms. I mean there are obvious design issues with the forks, but they KTM/BAJAJ are only providing a cover for 10K kms. I find that really hard to digest. sigh... seems like every day some small problem pops up.

UV dyes are helpful, but not sure where in India we may get one. Check the radiator for blockages as well as (minute) leaks.

Guys,

Since so many of you here are facing problems, I'm assuming that the Pbk & the KTM email has not been able to rectify your problem.

I want to note down all the problems that Duke 390 owners here, are presently facing in their bikes. Then, I'll approach a senior mechanic at the Pbk, who has serviced my bike so far & kept it running smooth.

There has to be a reason why my coolant is not leaking, and yours is. There has to be a reason why some bikes have more vibrations than others.

This mechanic is the same person, who rectified my dad's Bajaj XCD exhaust problem in seconds, just by hearing the sound & hearing its symptoms from us. His experience shows in my Duke's ride quality.

Meanwhile, many problems mentioned in this thread are solved too. So, I'm confused what all to select, plus its a 200+pages thread.

I request all owners currently facing a problem to send me a PM, copy pasting their own post, describing their problem. Mention your bike model year, your phone number, date of purchase, etc. too. Obviously, nothing can be guaranteed, but I will try my best to get correct info from this senior mechanic....
If deemed necessary by me, I'll approach higher sources too (in BAL).

Please send me PM's now. AmitRavi07: I have noted your problem.

Are they absolutely sure the coolant is not getting mixed with engine oil? Can you see any green residue in the window of engine oil level indicator? Because if this is the case, it is a pretty serious one. Hope that its not this!

Very nice gesture Samarth! Thanks

If I remember correctly, all the issues reported in this thread were solved by SVC, even though they took considerable amount of time (Like the speedo issue someone posted). Amit's issue is the one not yet solved I guess. But everyone is complaining because it shouldn't have happened in the first place!

Btw my bike is in SVC now the throttle action wasnt smooth and once you let go of throttle, it goes to zero position and kind of gets stuck there. Pretty irritating in traffic but once you are moving there is no problem. SVC pin pointed the problem to the butterfly valve in throttle body having some issue and they are investigating it now. Throttle body will be replaced once the KTM engineer gives the go ahead.

Even though this is a minor issue, it still irritates me by having to spend time in SVC visits, commuting on bus etc

Yes, all checks seem to point to no leak at all, but, the the coolant in reservoir drains in about 150kms of riding.

Yes, was aware of this issue and the svc guys did know about this too. It was one of the first checks they performed.

Thanks Samarth 619 for this nice gesture.

Can you please get some more details on "WHAT IS THAT SMALL CHANGE" in the way the seal is assembled?
I have had 3 leaks on the same fork so far and have only 1300kms of warranty left.

I want to note down all the problems that Duke 390 owners here, are presently facing in their bikes. Then, I'll approach a senior mechanic at the Pbk, who has serviced my bike so far & kept it running smooth.
Thanks, Here is my list:

* Fork seal busting as mentioned above. (right side - 3 times)
* bike stalling in gear when the clutch is pulled. This happens on and off. sometime does not happen for months and when it starts, it happens 2 3 times in a day. I think i have learnt to control it.
* fogging/ water droplets in the indicator, display console and headlamp.

Some not really problems but some solution to these would be a boon.
* excessive vibes- switching on and off from various areas, which i guess is inevitable cos of large single pot with high rev. I do routine check on the tightness of various fasteners etc, still some tips would be helpful.
* the KHAT sound from the chain while going over bad roads. Does get irritating, and whatever i do with the chain adjustment, the noise is there.
* the seat is hard like a stone. any tips to improve that? Can i order a separate seat, to do all my experiments on? want to keep the stock, just in case the experiments are not successful.

Otherwise the bike is nice.

Got the bike today itself! They told it will be ready only tomorrow but luckily they managed to do it today.

They replaced the entire throttle body and boy oh boy, the bike is simply lurching forward now! The older one didnt have smooth throttle movement at all which resulted in slow rotation of throttle but now its very easy. Have to get used to the bike again!

I hadn't ridden any other 390 in city earlier or I wouldve known something was wrong with throttle from day 1. I thought all 390s were like that. But the past few days it was very irritating and only then I realized mine is different from other 390s.

Very good job from Kasturba road SVC. They had to create a new report for this as this was the first time they encountered this issue. In earlier batch of D200, they had found a similar issue once. He showed me the faulty one and it looked like the machining of butterfly valve was not upto the mark. They will be sending it to Pune for analysis.

Anyways, glad that they were able to resolve it without any hassle

People who own the D390, its like a 26year old hottie done with a menopause...

Pics of the recent gateway... Loving this bike to the core, travelled with a pillion on wet roads and those metzelers have fevikwik or something on the road. Tested the ABS (Not purposely), near Kamshet there was an intersection and a trucker decided to barge in my lane, I was doing around 90 kmph speeds, ABS kicked in immediately as I braked, I remember reading in one of the forums that you need to stay put with the lever. Trust me the bike came to halt without skidding, forget the surface being wet, it was pouring bad and the Metz are 8,700kms old on my ride. We stopped and ensured everything was fine...

I had to pee...
How far did you travel with pillion? Neither me nor my wife enjoy longer rides on D390. The problem is engine braking - wife would slowly slide forward putting a lot of pressure on my back and wrists.

To tackle this, ask the pillion to grip his/her knees onto your lower back, like we grip the tank with ours. This would reduce their forward sliding. Might take a little bit of getting used-to for them.

Ride safe and have fun.

For khat sound (chain slapping)it can not be rectified..I tried a lot but still on potholes it comes and for seat I added some 3 inch of foam and it worked really well. Got it done from seat makers tell them to add 3 inch of soft foam on existing seat and then cover it from leather cloth which yhey use to make covers for seats..

Oh no, we travel a lot. Till date we have been to multiple 300-400kms ride without any problem, mostly in rains since I got my ride on 22Feb, 8700kms on the odo. My previous ride was an R15 V2, so the D390 is actually much easier and comfy for the pillion. Yes, during braking the pillion does move forward and puts a strain on your wrists, the solution to this problem is that you sit upright in a comfortable manner, somewhere between a touring and a cruiser bike posture. Let me know if this works out, if it does then expect some pressure on your shoulder which is fine for a powerful bike like ours.

Also, look for braking percentage. Since you have a pillion you can switch to 60% rear and 40% front. With ABS its like a cherry on top, so dont worry about skidding or losing control. Trust me braking will solve 80% of your back/neck/wrist/shoulder pains.
