  • Re: Shims/tappet sound - adjustment?

Hey guys. If you remember a few posts back, I was cribbing about the R15 and wanting to go in for a Duke.
Well, after riding the R15 for a good 2 months I gave her away (to a friends friend). It was a sad day for me.

I am getting my D390 delivered today. Any last minute suggestions/advise prior to the delivery?

Hoping that the bike will take away the gloom in my life considering that I am nearly bankrupt now!!
There is no better therapy than riding a bike down a straight road at full throttle with the sound of the engine for company.

Well dude.. Am really not in love with fairing bikes and delivery starts in October mid (a good two months or so from now).
I would want to see the RC390 settle down in India (in a year or so) and then have other options like R25, CB300R also to look at while making the purchase decision.

Till then am all set for the D390.

Thats sounds good but the the specs of these 2 bikes u have mentioned no where match RC 390 specs and more over CBR300R is still a single cylinder which doesn't even make sense to compare with RC390 except the comfort while riding on long tours. And we are still not sure if R25 will come to india in single or twin cynlinder.

The R25 is not gonna come in two cylinders and be priced in the RC390 range because
              1. Yamaha does not have a 2 cylinder assembly plant here
              2. Yamaha continues to focus on scooters and FZ series in India
So the R25 will either be a 300cc single or will be priced closer to Ninja 300 and have dual cylinders and be a completely imported unit.
              Dunno about CBR though.

              Are you booking the RC390?

Nothing running in my mind except the D390!!
RC390 came into my mind earlier (Along with the Yam and Honda) but went out primarily because faired bikes are not my thing and am not very confident in buying new launched bikes. Have researched the R25 quite a lot so wanted to share something on that.

Any post delivery suggestions for the D390?

U seem to be from Hyderabad only.. so when are from where are you planning to bike the bike from. If its from Banjara hills then let me know i can talk to Phani/Srikant who can take care of the PDI in your presence.

And post delivery i will tell you one thing.. none of the bikes are perfect so when you face some niggles in your bike instead of bragging them have patience and let the mechanic solve it. Srikant is very good mechanic for 390 and we hyderabadis have direct contact to Kishore, the cheif service engineer for KTM for AP/Telangana. One thing is for sure is that almost all problems in 1st lot bikes are solved in this 2014 model so i can say the new 2014 model bike is trouble free for sure.

Biggest thing i want to mention you here is that I dont know your riding background so what my advice is that this is really powerfull bike.. with power come the responsibility. Just ride safe as you know how safe the hyderabad roads are.

                      Thanks for the info dude.
I took my bike's delivery from KTM Madhapur. A guy called Ashfaq is there who is very helpful. Did all PDI checks in my presence.
Will get the bike serviced from Srikant then. Is he at Banjara Hills KTM?

Rode the bike for 70 odd kms in less than a day and in love. Few niggles I came across
                      1. The legendary 'khat' sound from the chain. It is not an issue for me, but is their a solution?
                      2. I stalled the bike multiple times while moving from stand still in 1st gear. Is their a specific way to release the clutch (without using accelerator)?
The fact that the D390 can start moving in 1st gear without using the accelerator is one of the many things I love about the bike. But should we not use the accelerator to move from 1st gear at all?
Feel really bad trying to use half clutch to move from stand still..

I really have no problems with the niggles. This bike reminds me of the cast iron bullets and the old mustangs. They are fast, furious and always have some niggles somewhere. But once you are astride and you have an open road ahead, nothing else matters.

Riding safe.mingling in the crowd and watching 150/200/250 cc rev their hearts out while I am comfortably cruising.

I've been using regular 91 octane fuel on my 390. Never used the higher octane fuel yet.

No need. I use normal petrol. Try to get Shell if you can - the engine runs noticeably smoother with Shell.

@The Duke, can you give more info about the exhaust?

Congratulations for your bike and I know Ashfaq too, he is fellow 200 rider and good guy.

The Khat sound is KTM/bajaj patent sound no fix for that get used to it and about the clutch dont worry you will get used to it and stop using half clutch you can normally release the clutch in 1st gear. You need some time to tame the 44 horses under the tank.

One thing is for sure to follow is never ever do engine lugging and dont cross 7.5k rpm before 1000 kms, and the traditional moto man's engine breaking is really not working very well for 390 (I know ppl gonna blast on me for this statement), we have only one thumb rule dont cross 7.5 rpm still 1000kms and change your engine oil after 1000 kms, preferably to 300v which are usually not available at showroom but you can get it outside and get it changed at showroom without any issues atleast in Hyderabad.

And PM me your watsapp number will add you to the our 390 watsapp group

                                CONFUSED!!! PLEASE HELP!!

I'm about to take delivery of my Duke 390 this Saturday. What is the method of running-in I should follow. Many tell me to blast the bike (but not redline it) or should I restrict myself to certain rpm (7500) until my bike clocks 1000kms??

I have quite a bit experience in riding but when it comes to my own bike im super confused with the running in procedure for Duke 390 :P

Thanks in advance for the help
