Rattles are solvable if you have patience and enough duct tape.

Check for the condition of tyres, they tell a lot about how the bike was ridden.
A higher odo(10-15k km) run might be cheaper and seem like a good deal but you ll end up spending a lot at the svc, from expensive tyres to chain-sprocket set, brake pads, etc which easily will into a 15k bill. The bare minimum a paid service will cost a 3-4k. Keep these in mind when you budget.

-Check if the MID was changed as the odo resets on change.

-Check for proper papers and get B-extracts from bangalore one.

-There are a few scammers lurking in olx, be aware. Was warned about the same from crime branch officer Who are tracking their call logs.

PS- bought myself a may'14 bike recently.

Thanks very much s1d, vijeth and Akhilash.
      1. I'll certainly have a look at all of these when I get around to finally picking one.

      2. @be careful on OLX: as it turns out this guy was quite a scammer. He claimed that he'd bought it from the first owner for 185K but hadn't changed the registration yet. I happened to find this ex-owner on OLX itself, who told me that he'd sold it for 141K. Later, when I spoke to him again, it turned out that that ex-owner was also not the first owner and he also hadn't transferred it to his name. AND, as he claims, the ex-ex-owner is also the second owner (and a few other inconsistencies). There seemed to be a whole lot of fishy shit that stank, so I've decided to keep away from it. I don't remember the vehicle number although I happened to take a gander at this bike. Also, this same latest owner without registration under his name published the same bike for 165K from another OLX ID. He seems to be a classic middleman who buys for a lower price and then sells at a higher one, thus being a leech on the system, benefiting only himself at the expense of actual sellers and buyers.

      3. Now, my situation: I was only prepared to shell out 100K for a Pulsar 200NS, but I seriously dislike the colours they have on sale at the moment (loved the yellow). I happened to see this bike for some 50K more, and couldn't resist. So, would you guys please share your opinion on whether it is possible to get a good Duke 390 for 140K in Bangalore? (ads span 150K to 180k) For once I can be a bit irrational and let practically go out of the window for such a beast.

Even 140K it's quite out of my budget, but for a bike like this I'm willing to borrow a bit and get my hands on it.

Yes you can get a well maintained bike for 140-150k 2013 model bikes albeit higher than 10k km run. I myself let go of one such example as my finances weren't ready yet.
But the problem sets in after a few months into ownership where you might have to shell out another 15k to insurance, tyre upgrades and chain-sprocket replacement.
The is definitely more expensive to run aswell considering it gives around 22kmpl in city.

Will let you know if I come across any bike.

PS- if you're on tight budget, this is not the bike for you, a brand new 200ns will give you much more peace of mind.

My suggestion is to wait and save for a new bike. As mentioned by akhilesh it is a very expensive bike to run. I own a duke 390 2013 model. And the tyre change was @ 11 k km was for rs 17.5 k. The chain lasts for around 13 k and needs to be replaced. Costs 2200 to change. Service bill is around 2 k. Let's say u bought a bike that has run around 10 k km. You would be looking at a min bill of 21k on normal maintenance ++ for things might need changing. So my suggestion is to buy a new one as the difference in what you will end up spending will not be much. Hope this helps

I can call it a day.

Of the total 8 RCs and of the three naked motorcycles that arrived at the dealership, two black nakeds were sent to their owners, one white was sitting around.

              ================================================== ==============================================

The older indicators were rock hard, stubborn to any flex. The newer ones allows for a good flex, literally bent it to the max, almost touching the mask, absolutely perfect and retains position with no fuss.

And also gets a black covering (like in RC) outside the rims of the indicators (all four) nice add-on makes it exceptionally waterproof, and no fogging. +1

Fork protector shroud, still trying to discern as to why, perhaps to prevent crud from sticking to the fork tube which in turn reduces the seal life. +1

Grips are a welcome change. Unfortunately switch gear remains the same, perhaps could have incorporated the RC switchgear (just my suggestion)

Plus, the clutch play is revised, thanks to the new triple spring setup. When asked upon, was this just a change in the clutch spring setup that was being made such a fuss about, the chap reiterated, yes the clutch has been revised and the SLIPPER CLUTCH too is included. +1 nevertheless.

Coming to the seats, the rider seat has an additional crease atop and has become a wee softer, the pillion seat remains the same. Sorry girls.

The clutch actuator arm, too gets a new design.

Being owned a early 2014 Duke, I can attest to the fact that how flexible and soft those rear fenders were. Mind you, these are superbly rock solid. Not prone to the crazy flex the older version were prone to. I tried pressing my full 90+ kgs on them for a second, feels remarkably stiff, and allows for the right flex +100

Old story, gets a crud prevention plastic wrapround inside the shocker (notice the external plastic protector to prevent crud throw on the tightly spaced rings, which causes paint to chip rubbing against crud. Totally +100

Old story. Radiator fan shroud to reduce the amount of heat deflected towards the rider. +100

              ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A glimpse at the ladies waiting for their respective riders.

              The model for the day

              ======================

The 2015 January RC. Nothing has been touched on the RC, it's almost the same as it was introduced.

Phew! Apart from these changes, even more teeny-tiny corrections are incorporated plus a few mechanical changes to the clutch has been done, as reported by the senior mechanic. All these changes have been included in the Duke 390 naked series ONLY for now. RC series has been untouched, at least for now. Next lot "might" be getting all these slipper clutch upgrades.

Apparently a very senior chap from KTM is heading to Coimbatore, and my good friends have promised me more updates on the RC. Will report them once on hand, verified, of course.

              Cheers!

Any idea if the slipper clutch could be installed for the older dukes? Had a chance to check with your friend?

Your post makes me think why havent i received a single call for my KTM 390 ad in olx/quickr. So what are we suggesting, the Katoom 390 is only good until it has crossed 11k kms on the odo? My katoom has crossed 11k kms and i have changed the rear tyre to a Metz one and will change the front tyre and chain sprocket in the next 2k kms.

So what does that mean? the RC is more appealing than the 390? Feeling highly depressed these days , did i make a mistake by purchasing this bike? I understand spending 21k within 11k -13k km son the odo is a real expensive affair but it also has given us a lot of good memories on many rides.

I just tested it out, and while the acceleration is orgasmic, my friend and I noticed this weird rattling sound around 2-4000 rpm in the first gear. We didn't get much time to test it out properly, but this was noticeable.
The owner said that it's because of the heavy sports engine. We, on the other hand aren't quite sure.

Would you guys have any idea about this?

                      • 2015 Duke 390

I got my Duke 390 on last Thursday. (Will be writing my own version of the review soon ). The date of manufacture mentioned is 8th Jan 2015.

Funny thing is my bike has none of these upgrades save two -
                        1. the external plasitc protector for the rear shock.
Dont know if it has an internal crud protector for the same like B7ACKTHORN mentioned.

                        2. Clutch actuator arm seems like the update pic shared by him
There is no slipper clutch for sure. There is lots of engine braking even with 5K rpm while running in.

And yes, service intervals are 5K KMs.

Guess mine is an intermediate model !

That being said, the dealership needs to be more up to date about all the future changes I feel. While booking mine I had asked them if an upgraded model will be available in 2015, they certainily did not know about all this and advised me that there will be anew lot but will be in showrooms by March end.

Not sure if I really want the slipper clutch with my skill levels though. I use mine for the daily office commute - 20 km at a stretch and occasional weekend rides around Mumbai.

The new slipper clutch can supposedly be retrofit onto older models as well and would cost around 6000rs. The info is not from a credible source, so dont flame on me if it isn't true. I think the customers who bought the first lot of MY'15 bikes might feel cheated, but the that is how it is...

Come to think, is it really necessary on a duke, unless ofcourse you ride it like you stole it all the time. I do aggressive downshift whith throttle blipping and have no fishtailing whatsoever.

Its defiwith be of great help on the RC which might see track days where one rides at their limits.

Yours is the model that was updated sometime in Sept '14 - It had the protectors on rear monoshock. Ditto for the D200 too.. i bought my d200 mid october'14
The ones from late Jan 2015 or Feb onwards, come with plastic fork protectors at the FRONT and handle grips from the RC series. This is the model in question... does it have the slipper clutch or no!
No concrete answer from ktm, i had even emailed them and their showroom guys and the sales manager for AP/Telangana was clueless as well when i spoke to them last week.

I am wondering why KTM is mum on this, while other auto magazines are confirming this news. Can't say for sure unless someone has ridden it or ktm confirms it.

                                Update:

So called up my dealership today, regarding any updates on the RC, and to my surprise, the chap said, sir you can expect no updates on the RC for at least year, rest assured, the slipper clutch will only be installed on the naked Duke 390, and neither of the both, naked or the RC 200 would include a slipper clutch. But when asked upon can this slipper clutch be installed on the older lots of Duke 390 surprisingly I got a big "YES". I specifically, asked him twice, can this be fixed on older 390, the senior mechanic was like "YES sir, you can retrofit the clutch assembly of the newer to older models"

Now this chap was 95% of the time, spot on with the information he had to offer though still I am taking this notion of his with a pinch of salt.

But RC not getting upgraded for a year is a real pain in the posterior, considering the waiting the period the motorcycle is already undergoing.

I guess March will prove to be a good show-time, when the Feb-March produced motorcycles hit the dealership. I guess till then, the pain continues.

                                Cheers!
