Re: KTM Duke 390 - Owners Reviews and Experiences
Yep it does feel rattly and unrefined after riding a parallel twin. That is until you twist the throttle and everything else pales in comparison to the exhilaration you get. Even after 28k kms, never fails to put a smile on my face everytime I twist the throttle!Originally posted by sandeip View Post

What's the difference between the two colors.. Both looks identical to me.. Is the difference is of decals?Originally posted by akshaygopan View PostDuke looks absolutely stunning in black.

The differences are tank color, headlight cowl color and the decals. Remove the decals and you can see the difference more clearly!!Originally posted by drive_angry View PostWhat's the difference between the two colors.. Both looks identical to me.. Is the difference is of decals?

Ok, then you'd need 1.4 litres of 5100. You can store the excess, nothing will happen to the oil provided the can is shut tightly. But, if I may ask, why did you buy 5100 in the first place? You could have bought two cans of 7100, and use the remaining oil later for top ups.. 7100 is equally good for running - in of the engine as 5100.Originally posted by Gunslingin_Ridr View PostI'm changing it at 221 km. Will be using 300v come first service.

I actually wanted Motul 3000 as it was a mineral one. Went around asking many shops, nobody had it. Settled for 5100. Didn't want to go full synth before first service.Originally posted by ags1773 View PostOk, then you'd need 1.4 litres of 5100. Service guys use Motul 7100.Originally posted by Gunslingin_Ridr View PostI actually wanted Motul 3000 as it was a mineral one. Went around asking many shops, nobody had it. Settled for 5100. the ktm's from the factory come prefilled with bajaj dtsi 10000 oil.which i doubt is a fs oil considering its pricing.Originally posted by akshaygopan View PostD390 comes with fully synthetic oil right? KTM recommends to use only fully synthetic oil in 390's. Service guys use Motul 7100.
this oil is made by hindustan petroleum (so is the brake fluid too)
Co-Branded Lubes | Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited
Bajaj
you could safely run the motul 5100 or 7100 (in the grade XXw50) right from day 1 without issues. Just keep the rpm's within the recommended range and it doesnt harm taking it beyond for a few minutes during the run in.
I for one have been using the motul 7100 (10w50 or 20w50) right from day 1 (yes, during delivery had to have the oil replaced for other reasons), and have covered almost 12000 km in 9 months now. Am impressed and very satisfied with the motul.. holds up pretty well for 5000km.
with the 5100, i would suggest you not push the oil beyond 3000km.

Although the query has been answered, I'd like to take this opportunity to give a brief insight into the world of scramblers. Around early 1920s in England, regular riders use to race from one place to another without the route being defined. The focus was more on skill and torque rather than top end. People started modifying their riders to cover all types of terrain. From Tarmac to grass, rocks, sand anything. The exhaust was kept high to avoid damage, the design became simple to reduce weight, higher CG and off road tires. As cafe racers came from normal street bikes to racers, these came from street bikes to dirt. Current motocross bikes are now specifically made for that purpose but cannot be called scramblers as they are not for streets. Pretty much any street bike can be made a scrambler provided you make the right mods.Originally posted by drive_angry View PostAnother quick question.. Would you say D390 is a scrambler? Certainly looks like one? But then experts advice are always welcome

Below are some of the characteristics of scramblers I got off a random website:
A higher mounted exhaust for ground clearance
A shorter, padded seat
Torque over top end power
Visual simplicity
Lightweight components
Smaller tanks
Mini guages, and a tucked in light.
Chunky off-road tires with spoked wheels.Just because you haven't seen it doesnt mean its impossible...expect the unexpected.

That's an over simplification to almost wrong chief! Fact is, synthetics are added after to change the dynamic viscosity and manipulate thermal decomposition rates. (No, I'm not a chemist, just did some research on the difference between viscosity ratings within motul engine oils) Conclusion, since the synth additives are the quickest element of engine oil to decompose, motul 7100 should give one a slightly better initial power but run rougher and last for less time than the motul 5100. I know! I was pretty surprised too! I've been using motul 7100 since my first change, did that at about 80kms (motul 5100).
Course, I could be wrong. It's a bit like new cylinder run in discussions.
Also, my EU manual says that the Duke 390 should be run with semi synth oil!! I'm actually planning to go to semi synth oil now. Since the SVC's don't stock them, I'll have to by them online.
Finally, I love these discussions, so healthy!
@R-series Nice stuff you got there bro! Made me think of one more think that would need to be done to make the 390 into a scrambler. Since it already pumps out so much torque (gotta love that high ratio single!), changing the sprockets to reduce the top end and stretch the first 3 gears would be pretty sweet.
Damn, I wanna convert Dizzy into a scrambler now. :PYou can prise these keys out of my cold dead hands.
Raleigh Steel-Body. 1945. (It's a bicycle. :D)
Kawasaki Bajaj Eliminator. 2001 (Ps. Just found her after she'd been lost for 7 years!! You may now go crazy.)
KTM Duke 390. 2014
The essence of practically every love song/poem ever - I think you look fit, lets go out? Not hanky panky, I promise. Unless you want to.
