• Re: KTM Duke 390 - Ownership Reviews and Experiences

Alright folks,

I recently changed my oil at 4500km (I know I know, but I've always done that with every motorcycle of mine) with Motul 10W50. I picked up a can at the KTM service center which came in a 1.5L capacity. But when I looked at the manual, it specifies 1.6L. Why so? I removed both the oil screens and practically emptied all the old oil (some would be left over though) and I still cant see the oil level in the sight glass. It shows when I tip the bike on my right. Any insight on this?

1.6L is the approx capacity a 390 takes in during an oil change! It shouldn't matter if the svc sells a 1 litre, 1.5 litre or a 100ml bottle. you should always fill up close to the recommended quantity and check the level and then top off till it reaches the recommended level. I know from experience that even a 400ml drop in oil will show the oil level below the minimum on a ktm 200.
When you drain the oil out, why would you see anything in the sight glass?! Tipping the bike (in either direction or up/down using a paddock) is NOT the right way to check oil level. And yes some amount of oil (could be as high as 200ml) is still left on draining it normally. The right way to check the engine oil is mentioned in the manual and also discussed on this forum a few times.

True. I was talking about not being able to see anything AFTER filling her up. These service center guys made me believe that a 1.4L is enough. I'll go ahead and buy another can and top it off.

You need to check the oil level correctly, idle the bike for around a minute then let it shut it off and check the oil level after 30 seconds by keeping the bike upright (ask someone to hold it) and then look at the level. 1.3~1.4L is for the 200's.

Did 3rd servicing today at 5,000 km. Changed engine oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plug, etc. Total cost Rs.1,300/-. And the end result is that she has become even more smoother and mushier than before.😊😊
Btw chip94 the recommended oil grade is 7100 20W50..
Some snaps:

Regarding my earlier Engine Oil Query, I topped up another 150ml and the level is fine now.

When I asked the Service guys at most of the service centers, all of them recommend to just use 1.5L for the Duke390. The manual available online says 1.7L.

Ya, but the service centres use 20W50.
