went for a ride around Bangalore yesterday. covered about 320kms on the ride including some highway + country roads. odo now reads 500+ kms. A few observations:
* The bike is a pleasure on the smooth highways, and smooth country roads, including smooth twisties, especially 3rd gear onwards.
* Well balanced, very good grip, firm, holds the line nicely coupled with good brakes.
* A bit tough to ride on broken and patched country roads, as speeds comes down to 20-50kmph, gotta keep it in 1st 3 gears, which means jerks on the body resulting from constant acceleration and engine breaking, eventually taking a toll over a period of time. Although the suspension does a decent job of absorbing small undulations of the road, Its not the same like my C5 for which these type of roads hardly mean anything.
* maybe i am used to touring (ergonomics) of the c5, i did find the foot rest position on 390 a bit uncomfortable, after riding for a while. Also, the slight forward inclined position from the torso upwards gave me a bit of discomfort at the end of the ride.
* the seat for some reason feels hot after sitting on it for a while.
* No heating issues when on open roads, no starting issues whatsoever.
* RVMs have scope for improvement wrt visibility.
* On my bike, there was this constant chain slapping sound highly pronounced on broken roads, to the point that it became bothersome. Its something that took a part of the pleasure away from the ride.
* turning radius feels larger compared to the C5.
* horns suck big time.
* Small tank capacity is a bit of concern as the fuel level indicator always playing with peace of mind. cannot fill it, shut it and forget it.
* verdit: i am happy but would be happier if i could mate the riding ergonomics and a bit of weight from my c5 with engine, handling, braking, and performance of the 390. I guess that really asking for a lot

UPDATE: for the first time, went to the AUTOSERVICE @ banashankri today. Its a nice little place with a small garden with a pond with fishes, and busas and ninjas being serviced around, and ofcourse a whole lot of ktms and other bajaj bikes. I had gone there to get the 3M PPF (paint protection film) done on the 390. I was under the impression that ppf would be like a stretchable film which could be laminated all over the painted surfaces of the bike. But its just pre-cut generic films much similar to screen protectors, and can only be applied at selected, and straighter surfaces, as it does not stretch greatly. Got a piece stuck on the area where usually tank pads are placed. Expensive, as that little piece of material costed 600 bucks..
While i was there, got the chain checked. It was loose according to them. Got it tightened, and hoping it will resolve the slap sound greatly which really was the biggest bummer on yesterdays ride.

Pls let me know which are those places in your pics, esp the one were bullet & 390 are parked f2f. Looks like lot of ppl are facing chain issues. One more thing for me to look out for while taking delivery.

THE46FAN - Thanks bro for the support. I did the break in text book style. During the 1000kms took it to 161 kmph @9500 rpm just once. I guess that should matter. Lets see when I can get my baby beast back. So bored without it right now.

Looks like Bajaj needs to seriously look into it and KTM needs to make sure that it is done.

Couple of incidents I read:
1. Grab rails broken
2. Brake calipers improperly bolted
3. Radiator fan not connected
4. Low coolant levels
5. And may other PDI related issues
6. Dealer trying to sell test bike.

:O
riazmomin - My duke felt pretty good until this incident. Checked the bike thoroughly with a friend from Honda. He is an expert since he has worked with Honda. Don't know may be the specific part was not fabricated properly. Anyways KTM Service told they will try their best. Hope the performance will remain the same.

deepak82 - during both the oil changes @ 500 kms and @ 1000 kms I went along with the recommended synthetic oil according to the KTM 390 Manual.

Anyone noticed any change in the exhaust note of the bike after 1st service?
I'm noticing a kind of clatter, which wasn't there before.

Picked up my 390 2 weeks ago. Just finished 950km and gave it for 1st service. Notes from my exp below

1) I am facing some vibes near the headlight /visor at around 4-5k rpm. I am also facing a deeper vibration sound at around 3-4k. Easiest way to reproduce is to engine brake at on 6th gear at around 3-4k rpm. This way there is no loud engine sound and 6th gear means that the bike will slow down slowly and stay in the rpm range for a while. I had demostrated both to the the mechanic before giving it... will find out in a day or 2 if he managed to sort it out. (Will take sometime to get it since i asked for some paiting works to be done too)

2) One other note : I am able to start the bike hot or cold within 1 try. I use the starter with no acceleration for 2-3 cranks and then just barely twist the throttle 1-2 cms. The engine immediately comes to life. It hasnt failed even onece in the last 2 weeks for me. Came naturally to me since thats what i did with my p220 earlier. You could try and see if it works for you!

3) Heating issue was pretty bad initially (eventhough i was wearing knee pads). Reduced in the second half of run-in. But i definitely wouldnt try riding it without knee pads. Its still to hot in stop and go traffic.

4) And for folks looking for good service centers in blore. I have been going to Auto Service in Bansankari for the last 6+ years (P220 before this). Very very good setup and the boss Venkat Shyam is a model for customer orientation like no other i have ever met. Period! If you have any issues (bike or service), talk to him! Its the only service center i have been too (older bikes/car stations included) that i am happy with.

I had the same headlight/visor vibration issue at 5-5.5k rpm. The SVC guys adjusted the visor, and it went away. I'm using the KTM Powerparts touring visor though.

Found a quirk about the bike - When you have the side stand down, the bike in gear and the clutch pulled in, the bike wont start. Either get the gear to neutral or else, pull up the side stand. This I guess also contributes to people facing "starting issues" with the bike.

Another thing, has anyone use some thing like Slime/RideON on the D200/D390? if yes, please provide a short review.

The side stand thing is a safety feature mate...it's not an issue...i think it's there is the 200 duke too.You can never ride these bikes with the stand down. They'll just stall.
