Well to tell you the throttle cable is quite new and the throttle grip was oiled and it feels ok while the engine is off. I guess it must be the dirt in the tank... I recently had to do a gas welding job on the tank due to a leakage problem. I might have to get the carb opened and cleaned properly. Also after the welding job, the bike seems to cough a bit (as if choking) at low speeds. I might have to adjust the air/fuel needle of the carb. It feels as if the bike responds less to revs.

After the weld did you not clean the tank ? If you have not done it,then do it ,and also strip and clean the carburetor . The rust which punctured the tank will be spreading like cancer inside.If you want to avoid future headaches..Just replace the tank.Originally posted by chief ashman View Post================================================== =====

The welder said he cleaned the tank ... I took his word ... I was in a big hurry so we just installed the tank back and I was on my way... guess I will have to go for a cleaning job.

Chief go for a new tank...Once the rust starts inside it will keep giving you problems forever.The petrol we get from most bunks have high level of moisture..Trust me I had the problem in my KB 100 initially and replaced it with an improved tank with tin plating..Till now (20 yrs after replacement),I have no issues.Originally posted by chief ashman View Post================================================== ======

Bro, what's the cost of a Fiero tank? still available? mine is the classic 2001 Fiero. I also want to change the side plastic pannels and have the chasis repainted.

Hey guyz i have one question to ask.... How many of u fill up your bikes petrol tank upto the brim (full tank)?? and if yes do u fill up on regular basis or occasionally? because my weekly travelling is 300-350kms, so i prefer to fill up almost upto the brim. is it a good practice??

@Tintin
Till date,i've never filled up the tank to the brim.If you fill it to the brim,it should keep the tank's inside from rusting ,other than that there's no benefit from it.
@chief
If no one else knows the price of a new tank,then i'll ask and let you know about it.The side panels of the fiero costs 850 Rs each.Life begins, once you hit the power band !!

@tintin708: gixxer_junkie_m is right, all it helps is in preventing loss of petrol though evaporation&also delays rusting. I used to tank up till it was my only bike-ever since I got my R15, I've been filling only fill half a tank at a time.
@chief_ashman: Tank is costly-around Rs.3750 IIRC.
@gixxer_junkie_m: Come on GMail, let's talk!Quench my thirst with gasoline!

Acha ok< but i have also heard many saying that if u tank up full, it gives u a 5 to 10% increase in the overall avg. well whats the logic behind it?? i cant understand and neither have i experienced the so called "Increase in average"!!
but yes, having a full tank, u tend to ride ur bike more and more!!!!

@cheif_ashman. dude if u have the Suzuki fiero, make sure whether the tank is available with the TVS company. i am 100% sure that neither of the TVS SVC or even the parts godown would keep/stock an extra tank. tanks, silencers are parts which hardly anyone replaces, except if there is a genuine reason such as in ur case.
dude u know the F2 silencer is no longer available!! even if u order it from the company, the company itself does not have the stock!!

I am used to filling up my tank to the brim on a regular basis, particularly because we out here regularly face fuel shortages... so just to be on the safer side, we rush to fill our tanks. However, the rusting thing happens ... I blame the phenomenon upon the adulturated fuel available here. out here petrol has a lot of moisture (water) mix, so it sits at the bottom and slowly lets rust in and eats up the metal. Fiero tank seems quite sturdy, because Hondas and other brands bought at the same time rusted 3 years earlier. A host of other problems faced by relatively new bikes makes me feel quite satisfied at being a Fiero owner.
@ Sarvajit and Gixxer - Thanks for the info ... it does seem quite costly.

In that case, the best thing to do is to give it for a gas weld job in which they cut out the rusted parts and properly weld in new metal and give the tank a new paint job. The tank appears quite new and the marks do not show. The silencer is of good quality... no problems faced yet.

Well, we out here in the hilly regions with bad roads cannot expect the mileage to be particularly good. I must be getting close to 40 kmpl now. Which I think if great.
The logic behind is that it minimizes evaporation... so more mileage.

the overall metal build quality (tank, silencers etc) of both suzuki and TVS are excellent! but one day when i was at my svc, this fellow wit a red f2 came and asked for a silencer replacement (it had rusted both from the inside as well as outside) its quite rare, but ya it happens, and plus his bike seemed to be in a very bad shape, he didnt maintain it properly. so thats how i came to know that silencers aren't available anymore!!
Man, my bike is more than 7yrs, 79,000kms, still no problems either!!! i mean its amazing!!! i think i could use this bike (if hopefully part availability is not an issue) i could use it for another 7 yrs!! i dont know what to say!!

Finding spares has become more and more difficult. There is often long waits for parts to arrive. If the supply didn't cease, we could easily maintain a Fiero for 10 more years.
Tell you what! the silly mech had fitted the tank back and in the process had sort of squeezed the throttle cable restricting the movement (free play). So everytime I turned towards the right all the way, the rev would automatically go up, even when I did not touch the handlebar. So I just lugged on the cable and set it free and now the bike revs well and settles back when let go. How silly ... It really made me wonder because I know he did not even touch the engine or anything ... just opened the tank for the weld job.
@ Everyone ...
Guys!!! we are nearing the 100 page milestone ... good to see this forum move in the right direction. Keep posting & Cheers!!!Last edited by chief ashman; 11-17-2010, 12:07 PM.
