    • Trip time!!!

      Guys need your help..

I am planning a trip for this Friday as it is a holiday. its about 200 km both ways incl. my bike is due for its first service on 24 Apr. i have run around 580 k on the bike so far. can i go ahead with the ride and then come back and give the bike for first service on 25 or is it better i service the bike on Thursday and then take it out on Friday. i am sure i cant go beyond 60 kmph on the bike as it would then exceed 4500 rpm. i dont want to exceed that mark till 1st service. you guys reckon the bike can take the ride???

(Seems like i have answered a few questions myself but i would like your suggestions too..)

Btw, Joel has some pretty good mods, you could check the FZ thread, he's made a FFE and custom bore kit for FZ and other bikes as well.
Our riding habits are totally different and mine will not be helpful to you. My belief is that wasting even a drop of fuel is a crime against mankind for I am involved in it. So, I cannot adopt your style and with the style you described, it will be difficult for you to adopt mine. Hence, let both of us go on with our own styles.

As you said, Joel may be a good bike modifier and may have done what you said but I am not interested in any kind of modifications as being almost satisfied with the present condition of my bike and therefore no need to visit the FZ thread to learn about it. Besides, a villager like me cannot play with the bike as if it is a toy.

          I'm still in College.
And the signals are because i travel within the central parts of the city, richmond road, residency road, KH road, siddiah road, JC road to name a few.

As you said, dont rev the bike above 5k rpm too much, its ok to rev occasionally since you've crossed 500kms, it would be good if you give it for servicing before going for the ride, reason being they'll change the oil which would have metal particles etc.

Well, i'm not going to modify my bike anytime soon either, i was just replying to someone who asked for help to make his bike louder, and i told you about the FZ thread just incase you were curious to see the mods.

I thinks that explains your low mileage. You must hardly be getting beyond 4th gear and all the stopping and starting and prolonged periods in low gear can drink up a lot of fuel. no matter how you ride. fuel will be burnt a lot.

The previous was 4643 kms in 71 litres, i.e. a total of 6543 kms in 101 litres of fuel.
Without any doubt, there is something faulty with your bike or your driving habit. Do a CO test and get the carburettor retuned by an experienced mechanic at the service centre. Besides, keep the tank full with fuel and polish your driving habits. This will give you an excellent mileage; I am sure.
I think blame is on my riding and the distance covered at one stretch.
My college is around 2kms from my place,so its just 2+2 everyday and weekly once i take her out for 50kms ride with speeds varying between 60-100kmph in 6th gear, even the traffic is less during my travel.[gear shifts between 4-6k rpms on highways]
When the service centre guys tuned i got below 40kmpl.After i tuned myself iam getting around 40-45kmpl.
              *calculating reserve-to-reserve.
*even changed petrol bunks few times to check the difference.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.

                  • Update

                    Hello friends,
I just crossed 20K [~20250] on the odo.

Last sunday morning when I started the bike for church, I sprang up to life at the first try as it was from the beginning. After the regular 60 second idle, I tried to move the bike on 1st gear. It stalled. I thought it was a faulty release of the clutch. I tried again, bike starts and stalls on 1st grear. Tried again, same result. Then only I realised that the bike was not revving more than 2K rpm. The moment I cross 2K , it stalls .[There was more than 4 ltrs of fuel]. Was just shocked to see that this was the first time [in 20K kms] something like this is happenning. I put the bike on centre stand and inspected the oil window. It was at the lower limit. I saw that I had crossed 2K Kms with this oil and its the time to change. But I did not understand why this oil level went down which never happened even after 2300 Kms on previous oil changes.
The previous day late morning I had a 70Km round trip in the hot chennai sun. The bike was not upto the mark in smoothness. But It was fine when I took it in the evening for another 30 Km city drive.

Another surprising fact is Sunday evening my bike started perfectly and going on fine till now .... I find a small difference on the smoothness and I did not cross 4500 Rpm from then on till I change my oil.

I feel I should shift to 15W50 grade as some one else also had the same prob as he shifted to Hydbd from Mumbai. I was using Motul 3000 4t Plus 20W40 mineral oil. Just bought a Motul 3000 4T Plus 15W50 Mineral.

As this is also an alternative grade suggested by the manual, am trying it. hope this is ok. Will try and update.

Can anyone let me know if there is some other problem with the bike other than low engine oil ? Also can someone throw a light on oil break ?

Put bike on center stand.start your bike and don't rev it. just leave it. don't touch anything. watch the tachometer. where ever it is pointing. that is your IDLE RPM.

well actually it is the engine speed when the throttle is not pressed at all. bike should run smoothly and not stutter. check if the idle rpm is what it is supposed to be with the user manual. too low and the bike will cut off. and too high, guess its bad for the engine.

The 15W50 would help your bike beat this summer heat easily.Though as with the mineral grade your engine oil has to be changed after 1500kms interval for best results from the bike.

On the other hand your can use a synthetic grade 15W50 for 5000kms with ease.

I too think that the stalling is due to improper release of clutch, insufficient acceleration or something hindering the movement of the bike but as you are an experienced biker, I cannot be sure about it. Anyhow, it is not due to the suspected shortage of oil.

Oil leak through the damaged piston ring or even gasket is not common in GS as it is in some other bikes. The suspected drop of oil level is because you have checked it immediately after starting the bike. To ensure it, keep the bike idle for a few minutes and check it again.

Check the chain slackness, air pressure, air filter and lubricate the necessary parts including the chain to regain the smoothness of the ride.

The recommended oil for GS is 20W40 in all weather, including the harsh conditions of some parts of Rajasthan, where the temperature is below -5 to above 56 0C. In case this oil is not available (see page 3-2 of user’s manual), the next suggestion is 15W40, then 15W50 and so on. So, the best oil you can use is 20W40 and if it is not available, 15W40. Sticking to W40 has some other reasons, mainly related to the proper flow and thus lubrication of the various moving parts. Remember that we are not running the engine too long without riding to overheat it.

But I don’t think there may be any considerable impact if you use 15W50 oil as Mach50 suggests. He is not a common rider as we are, but a dare devil who touch 125 kmh with pillion rider.

After all, my conclusion is that your bike is perfectly perfect. Change the oil, oil filter, clean or change the air filter and do all the other usual maintenance works.

The difficulty to rev beyond 2k was a dream or a dream in a dream. Forget it. All the best.

1.5k when warm is ok....but ur idling RPM should always be set when ur engine is warm...i guess for GS 150...1.3k when warm should be ok...I have RTR 180 and my idling RPM when warm is ~1.3k...

Apache idle @ 1300rpm is ok...for GS warm idle is 1500rpm and cold idle is 1100-1300 rpm.
