  • Re: TVS Apache RTR 200 4V Ownership Experience

I recently rode to my home town in Thrissur, Kerala from Banglaore. Thought, I would share my experience here.

The distance was about 500 kms one way.

During my onward journey, I took the highway route. 95% of it was nicely paved higway. I could easily maintain speeds between 80 - 100 kmph for hours without any issues. Mileage - 41kmpl

While returning I took a different route which involved 27 hairpin bends, forest roads and about 100kms of highway. Almost 70% of it was single lane traffic. The bike was as easy as it was on the highways. Enough power for those quick overtakes. Perfect suspension setting for those occasional bad patches of roads. Mileage - 37kmpl

All together, my bike upkept very well during the whole trip!!

The only issue I had was that, during my onward journey after sometime the clutch started slipping. Just few days before the ride, I had got it serviced. They overtightened the clutch and messed it up. Got it adjusted once I reached kerala.
I had got it serviced at around 2100kms where as the actual 2nd service interval is between 2500 and 3000. Soon after the service I had informed the ASC guys about this. They told me that they have overtightened it intentionaly, or else it would become loose before the next service. I some how halfmindedly accepted it.[emoji52]

So guys, never ever allow the ASC guys to overtighten the clutch. Tell them to adjust it to the to the optimal setting irrespective of the service interval.
I have now learnt to adjust it myself.

The fuel sensor error still keeps showing up whenever I fill the tank fully. This shows up for a few kms untill the fuel level goes down a bit. This happens even if I fill below the neck level.

Another thing I noticed is that, even though I have cold start issues here in Bangalore, when I was in Kerala I had none. I did not even have to use the choke in the morning!! So weather matters! Maybe i'll just try tuning my carb myself.

Kollam - Bangalore was my usual route during college, good memories.

If you pay attention you'll notice that under load the clutch lever pulls back a bit, which is the reason why clutch play is recommended, keep it within the recommended range and you're good to go, anything less and clutch would slip under load, happens on all motorcycles, a little less on motorcycles with an external return spring.

Digital meters have their qualms, not a matter to be concerned with, though if you're in the mood for some warranty replacement then go ahead.

Happens, on the CT100B I never face the need to use the choke when I'm riding down south, the only instance when I'd had to use the choke was when I was riding through Rajasthan, as it was freezing cold in the morning.

But that isn't enough reason to tune the carburetor, in fact I'd suggest you leave it alone. Unnecessary fiddling with the carburetor would invite unnecessary problems.

SVC guys did tighten my cluthch, after 1st service, I had take the bike back to them to adjust it again. Fuel sensor error also comes after re-fuel, and cold start issue is still there even though the temperature is above 30 degree. SVC guys are really poor and inexperienced. My bike was serviced by a boy who was hardly 18. If I can see someone in that age servicing my bike, I can only doubt the quality in servicing. Really don't know how someone can hire such a small boy for such places, where it has to be near perfect, I doubt even if it is legal to hire someone so young.

Procure a small can of wd 40. Is about 75/- odd. Give a very short spray on the part and let it sit for few min, sometimes even a few hrs if too much rust/gunk. Best not to use force on that screw.

A Bajaj Discover 100 4G for the good part of 2 years before upgrading to a Bajaj Pulsar 220F.

In the process of finding that exact setting now!
Its there in the owners manual, most probably within the first few pages.

Thumb rule is to maintain 2mm at the pivot, I basically wedge my key in the pivot and tighten the cable, this leaves enough play for things to work fine.

Will check with ASC once more. If it still keeps on happening, planing to raise a complaint. I do not want leave it and live with it !! [emoji16]
Do confirm with other owners, if it is a common thing then better not have the SVC mess with a motorcycle that is otherwise working fine.

Shady workmanship is a trademark when it comes to a majority of ASC's in India.

Yeah, completed the GQ Circuit on my CT100B last year around this time, covered under 8000 km's in under 2 weeks.

After 1000 km, my first two mileage test results:

Semi-Highway (noticeably high traffic and constant gear changes though out 600 km trip) - 45 kmpl
City (Always high Chennai traffic) - 39 kmpl

I haven't tested the mileage, as I never really cared for it. Just wanted to look into figures how it is.
Really impressed with the results, even my splendor used to give me 45 kmpl with the way I ride.

I'm starting to get issues while shifting from 1st to 2nd gear.
Neutral comes in between, even though when I try to shift from neutral to 2nd gear, It still goes to neutral after some 2 to 3 seconds in 2nd gear.
This issue is just popping out recently, and the frequency is increasing.
Also the gear feels really loose while in the first 3 gears.
Anyone faced the same issue? any suggestions?

                          Hi guys,

This is gonna be my first post here. After silently following xbhp all these years I finally took the plunge and joined it.

Got my RTR 200 ABS back in Jul and must say it's been absolute fun last 7 months. I do regular highway rides and bikes already clocked 5.2k km.

Lately I've been experiencing a drop in performance and there is a noticeable lag when I open the throttle fully in 3rd and 4th gears. Especially in the range of 3.5-4.5k rpm. I can feel the bike struggling to pick up. Also, the exhaust note seems different and not the same roar it was earlier.

I have already visited the ASC wherein they were reluctant to admit there were any problems with the bike. After much persuasion, they merely tightened the chain and adjusted clutch. This of course did not solve the problem.

After much persuasion, they opened the air filter. It looked totally spent up and hence I got it replaced. I also got the spark plug checked to which they said it was fine and no change required to AF screw. They did adjust the idle speed (increased to about 1750rpm). Again, which did not solve the problem.

I am still facing the performance issue on the bike even after filter change. The bike was in for 3rd service just month back at 4.8k km.

The last experience at TVS ASC was terrible. So much so that I have raised a complaint with the TVS Customer care. Awaiting their reply on it. The SA was outright rude and incompetent. He simply could not digest the fact that my hunch with air filter was correct and kept on treating me like a noob.

Any idea on what might be wrong here?

                          Thanks,
                          Agney

Was your oil changed during the 3rd service? If not, get it changed ASAP. The TVS oil is not good for 6k kms as mentioned in the manual. It comes for max 4k or so.

The AFR may also need correction as mentioned by by Rahul.G

Or it may be just that you got used to the power of the bike.

Had the exact same issue with my bike. Had a blank spot between 4 to 5k rpm. Your fuel screw needs to be adjusted. Follow the sporztourer on youtube, he has a video on how to adjust it, super easy. He also rides a rtr200
