if it's a new bike, then just top it up close to the max level. thereafter it will just keep flip flopping between the min-max level. the reason explained below.Originally posted by Mourya@ymd View PostHow long does coolant last on an average?? I did around 2800 kms and it is about to reach the min line.
for e.g. on my d200 i never have to top up (unless the coolant has been drained and refilled). the coolant level should more or less stay between the min-max lines in the expansion tank.
when the bike is new or has been drained and filled with coolant, it is normal to notice a drop initially.. once you top it off it will more or less remain constant.
this is how the coolant circuit works:
1. When the temp (and hence the pressure) rises in the radiator, the valve in the radiator opens to let the coolant in to the expansion tank (the white tank) -- this is why you might see the coolant level 'increase'
2. when the temp drops (and hence the pressure drops), the coolant is sucked back in to the radiator from the expansion tank -- hence the 'drop' in level.
so, after the initial flip flop in the level because (on a new bike or one that has been drained and filled with coolant).. it should more or less remain between the min-max level. if every-time you top up (Say to the max) and it ends up at the min after a few 100 km then it probably is leaking (externally or internally). Evaporation loss is negligible and will probably take a very long time to notice a significant drop due to evaporation alone (Since the expansion tank has a over flow pipe and that is the only path for evaporation)

Coolants don't have a set life per se, but it's always recommended to replace them periodically every year. The stock coolant that comes with the bike is Motul Inugel Expert, which is readily available at most KTM dealerships. Top up if required to the recommended level of between min and max.Originally posted by Mourya@ymd View PostHow long does coolant last on an average?? Cheers.....Originally posted by s1d View Postif coolant mixes with oil, it will turn greyish.
i suggest you drain both the coolant and the engine oil and inspect them individually. if it ain't mixing, then there is a leak/evaporation loss somewhere. 600km is too short an interval to notice significant coolant loss.

And change the coolant once in two years..same goes for brake fluid also.Originally posted by Mourya@ymd View PostThanks for the information.
for the coolant you can stick with what the svc provides (mostly the motul inugel expert @ rs.200 per litre, 390 uses around 1.1 litre iirc) or get the motul motocool expert (from a local store or online.. it costs around Rs.400 a litre). i switched to the motocool expert an year ago and haven't noticed any change in temperatures/fan running whatsoever.. works just fine.
for a little bit of top up or in an emergency it's fine to add/use water.. no issues. don't use just entirely plain water in the long term.

Thank you.. I got one more question,, how much engine oil should I top-up after a service?? At present my bike shows engine oil at minimum mark. Would it result in any bad consequences??Originally posted by s1d View PostAnd change the coolant once in two years..same goes for brake fluid also.

Re: 2017 Duke 390 Owners Reviews and Experiences
Top up is not required after every oil change. Top ups are required as a periodic maintenance of the vehicle, when one observes the oil level is below the manufacturer stated levels. It's always a good practice to keep an eye on the oil sight window. A tip here would be, always check the engine oil level when the engine is warmed up, this makes the oil flow well and is easier to read in the sight window.Originally posted by Mourya@ymd View PostThank you.. here is how you are supposed to check the coolant:Originally posted by Mourya@ymd View PostThank you.. I got one more question,, how much engine oil should I top-up after a service?? At present my bike shows engine oil at minimum mark. Would it result in any bad consequences??
usually after a service (assuming engine oil + filter has been changed), one might have to add/remove a wee bit depending on how much was actually filled.
if you followed the above method to check engine oil and found it at min level, then you probably do not need to top up (or just a bit more so that it is slightly above min. if you noticed the oil not appearing in the sight glass or checked oil on a cold engine and it was at min, then add little by little till its closer to the max level.
do not over fill engine oil.
there is no fixed amount that one needs to top up.. on a warm engine after shutting off and waiting for 30 seconds, the oil level need to be at/slightly above min level and on a cold engine it needs to be closer to the max level. and remember to add little by little and check, don't just dump in oil.

I completed my 3rd Service last week.
1st Service - 1600+
2nd Service - 1800+ (They changed the oil filter)
3rd Service - 2000+ (They changed Airfilter & Oil filter this time), along with this I had to replace my front break pads (1700 + labor charges)
Service Schedule as per manual is like this:
Hope it helps

Thanks leaf, it does help! I was just cross checking. I had heard that KTM like Benelli also levies exorbitant service charges but these charges for a 400CC seems quite reasonable.Originally posted by leaf View PostHi,

Re: 2017 Duke 390 Owners Reviews and Experiences
No way KTM levies exorbitant service charges like Benneli's. Benneli's are like maintaining a big brand image only by keeping low Service interval and keeping their service cost on higher side. KTM on the other hand is like maintaining a Bajaj Pulsar despite technologically advanced bikes.Originally posted by drive_angry View PostThanks leaf, it does help! I was just cross checking.
