Today I changed my engine oil & filter at 300kms for Duke390. This was not recommended by the manual but I insisted the SVC manager and he was very cooperative. The oil was very blackish and can see tiny metal particles around oil filter ring. Bike was on mineral oil from factory outlet and I have stick to mineral oil till first 1000km. Will change to motul fully synthetic ester compound oil at 1000km.

Just out of curiosity, what oil did you replace it with? 10W50? or 15W50?Originally posted by DRRAVINDERCHOPRA View PostToday I changed my engine oil & filter at 300kms for Duke390. A friend of mine did the same but still complains of some vibes. Did you notice a significant change in smoothness? Or maybe thats only after fully synt during the first service.Originally posted by DRRAVINDERCHOPRA View PostIt was 20w50 from Bajaj

The vibes are still same but I can feel a significant change in gear change sound. It's was like thud sound earlier but gear changes are smoother now. Bike is on mineral oil and this may be a cause of vibes. I think changing to fully synthetic will reduce vibes after 1000kms

Hi everyone
I have one concern. The tank looked too slim and the slope a little too much for a tank bag to fit on the bike. Any one tried mounting a tank bag with a dslr in it ?ATGATT! There are many wonderful riders/drivers out there who would intrude in your riding space without any notice. Be prepared. Stay Safe.

Re: 2017 Duke 390 Owners Reviews and Experiences
Finally got the bike today, had booked it on the 23rd of Feb and skipped 1st batch due to ECU Error and a few other issues. Just after getting out of the showroom, I got ECU error turned the ignition off then turned it on and everything was fine. Rode in pretty bad traffic for more than 30mins and engine heat went max till the 2nd last bar. Still, it was not very hot around my legs and thighs. The display rebooted on its own once. I feel that the rear brake doesn't have any bite in it. Is it same for others as well?
BTW, after mostly riding 150cc, the power in this bike felt amazing. It's fast, really fast. The seating position is comfortable along with well cushioned seat. I can ride it all day long.

Congrats on the new bike. Skipping the first batch did not help much I guess.
Question - When the Display reboots , did you happen to notice if the ODO values clocked back? or were they retained just normal?

Re: 2017 Duke 390 Owners Reviews and Experiences
10w50 or 20w50 doesn't matter more in my conditions in this season. The 10 or 20 shows the temperature for oil to attain suitable viscosity. We don't have very cold environment conditions so it doesn't matter much if we have 10 or 20 rated oil. Most important is that its mineral oil and mineral oils are best for break-in periodOriginally posted by reeavees View Postbut as per manual recommendation its 10w 50 for 390 and 20w590 for 200.

I was one of the first guys to trigger that issue. No matter what, if the Console resets, the ODO WILL go back to the last time the bike was started.Originally posted by r24x7 View PostCongrats on the new bike. Skipping the first batch did not help much I guess.

Re: 2017 Duke 390 Owners Reviews and Experiences
just another myth especially with today's engines/tech. do you know that in some export markets, these ktm's get a fully syn oil right out of the box?Originally posted by DRRAVINDERCHOPRA View PostMost important is that its mineral oil and mineral oils are best for break-in period
i've used fully syn oil right from the moment I took delivery of my D200.. it is now close to 29k km and I haven't faced any issues with the engine.
Just use common sense when running in the engine.. if in doubt just follow what is recommended in the manual and don't fall for some of them 'expert' advice's floating around on fb/youtube.
Going by your id, i assume you are a doc (or soon to be one).. how would you feel if some patient google's something and tries to interfere in your diagnosis ? Just too many misconceptions floating around the web.
10w , 15w, 20w don't really matter in our hot temperate weather conditions, as long as the second number is 50Originally posted by reeavees View Postbut as per manual recommendation its 10w 50 for 390 and 20w590 for 200.
just want understand what's difference between 10 w and 20w
The lower the number before W, the oil flows better at a lower temp (now don't tell me 20 C is low temp)
Unless you are riding in very cold conditions (like leh etc..) a 10w or a 20w should work just fine all year around.. just make sure the number after w is 50.
Motor Oil Viscosity Grades Explained in Layman's Terms
Oil Types, Weights & Viscosity FAQ - Valvoline®
Engine Oil Viscosity | Engine Oil and Lubricants | Castrol - Engine Oil & Lubricants | Motor Oil | Synthetic Oil | Diesel Oil | ATF - Automatic Transmission Fluid | Castrol India
Don't break your head trying to understand these and get in to the never ending oil war... keep it simple and stick to Motul 7100 (10/15/20W 50). What kills your engine is lack of oil or irregular oil changes/maintenance and ripping on a cold engine.
In an emergency (stuck somewhere with an oil leak/low oil level) just pour in whatever oil you can lay your hands on (motorcycle, car, truck oil..).. any oil is always better than no oil.

yeh, the rear brake would feel a little 'wooden' without much bite initially. the rear is a floating caliper and i've noticed that after a couple 1000km the bite begins to improve (or you could have them remove the pads and rub them down on coarse sand paper and remove around 1mm of material).Originally posted by kausarayub View Postfeel that the rear brake doesn't have any bite in it. but hey, the front brake can be used most of the times (barring sandy/slippery conditions) and once you get the hang of it, you'll hardly touch the rear.

Thanks bro. I have ridden ~240kms and it happened only once. Every value/setting was retained by the system.Originally posted by r24x7 View PostCongrats on the new bike. Skipping the first batch did not help much I guess.

Yeah, using both the brakes makes it easier to stop the bike. I'll wait till the first service to see if the rear one improves or not, after that I can get it scrubbed.Originally posted by s1d View Postyeh, the rear brake would feel a little 'wooden' without much bite initially. the rear is a floating caliper and i've noticed that after a couple 1000km the bite begins to improve (or you could have them remove the pads and rub them down on coarse sand paper and remove around 1mm of material).
