Either will do, even a 15W50 or 5W50 or 0W50 commonly seen in cold freezing places.
As long the 1st number is not greater than the recommended 20W and with 2nd number is not less than recommended W50, anything higher say W60 is also fine, as long as oil is synthetic and sticking to JASO MA2 or API SL and above standards.
Confused? Lost? Suggest you to read and understand everything about oils, cold and hot viscosity ratings and specification grades from the below link.

ideally try not to go above a w50. it might sap power and fe to some extent.Originally posted by kiran2508 View Post

for the weather in india and most motorcycles, stick to a w40 (10,15,20 W40) unless a W50 is specified. if a w50 is specified by manufacturer, it is better to stick to a w50 (the no. before it can be 10,15,20 no big deal)
i know these days many manufacturers recommend and use a w30, but personally i find a w40 well suited for all yr around with good protection.

by the way have you observed difference in smoothness of the engine by using Shell petrol or is it just me feeling it.
I filled back to back normal and shell petrol and observed the pickup and engine to be much more smoother.
Dont know how far it is true.

Re: 2017 Duke 390 Owners Reviews and Experiences
Hello All,
Can anyone give a brief information and experience about taking D390 offroad/very bad roads. I am usually the one who takes country roads/ internal village roads which are usually in bad shape at many places. I also like to find some trails and ride. Currently I own an Apache and it is serving me just fine. I have slapped on larger tyres just to increase ground clearance. So just want to know how much of this is feasible with D390? It definitely needs tyres with higher sidewall and an engine guard to protect from uneven roads. I am just confused about whether it will be a right decision for me to buy D390 considering my ride pattern.BLR-RAMESWARAM-KODIAKANAL-BLR http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/tourer/3...ing-hills.html

Put on some good rubber for your purpose and the bike won't disappoint.Originally posted by msuthar25 View PostHello All,

I took the bike to Leh and then to Zanskar on Metzellers and the bike never complained. Though having off-road type tyres would have made the ride more fun.
Ground clearance isn't an issue unless you ride it like a mad man.
Only thing I would want to change is slightly higher handle-bar. Handlebar risers should be ot help.
Take a longish test ride if possible and see for yourself how the bike performs.
Ride safe and have fun.

How did the suspensions perform in this case? did you had them adjusted on softer side?
I had took a 300km ride earlier but couldn't test it out on bad roads. It was absolute fun on straights and highways. Planning to take another one soon with some bad roads in mind.BLR-RAMESWARAM-KODIAKANAL-BLR http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/tourer/3...ing-hills.html

I kept the suspension at the factory position. No worries on that side for me.Originally posted by msuthar25 View PostThanks for prompt reply.

Re: 2017 Duke 390 Owners Reviews and Experiences
as nadz11.ns pointed out, the stock suspension setting should be ok to go over bad roads. the tires maybe you could shift to something like the michelin psr in the same stock size, these are harder compound that metz, and very puncture/cut resistant with good grip levels. Or maybe you could even slap on the michelin in 140/70 for a higher sidewall ratio.Originally posted by msuthar25 View PostCan anyone give a brief information and experience about taking D390 offroad/very bad roads. on another note, if its mostly the kind of roads you mention, why not pick up the 200 ? that might be sufficient for the kind of riding you intend to do. for the tires, again you have the michelins or maybe even the timsun tires.. use the stock mrf for a couple 1000km and see how it fares before changing tires.
mrf/metz are soft compound and prone to cuts and punctures.

I tested out GS310 as well and those metzelers are good to serve my kind of riding. I guess they can be fitted on D390 as well which would be great.Originally posted by s1d View Postas @nadz11.ns pointed out, the stock suspension setting should be ok to go over bad roads. the tires maybe you could shift to something like the michelin psr in the same stock size, these are harder compound that metz, and very puncture/cut resistant with good grip levels. Thanks for the suggestion, I was thinking of 200 but then I am sold on D390 for its looks. 250 looks the middle man for me right now.
I also got to carry a pillion sometime so that's again a bigger dilemma. I am going to get a really longish test ride with pillion as well to make sure everything is fine.
Well no bike fits all of our criteria's I m just looking for one which can tick most of boxes in my list.

Re: 2017 Duke 390 Owners Reviews and Experiences
if you frequently carry a pillion, better to bump up the suspension one step higher or two depending on payload . it's not pillion friendly beyond a certain payloadOriginally posted by msuthar25 View PostI tested out GS310 as well and those metzelers are good to serve my kind of riding.
