Why would he get less mileage if his bike is running lean, AFAIK bikes running lean get more mileage and give less pick up.
But my knowledge might be wrong. Hope someone will come and clarify.

Also can anyone tell me the stock setting of the AFR screw of the apache 180, when my mechanic cleaned it a couple of days back he has tuned it to give more mileage, i want to use the stock setting. By stock setting i mean how many twist/turns of the AFR screw...

saipranav- i dont think my bike is running lean it has great pickup and top speed!

lean mixture = less pickup, top end and more mileage

rich mixture = good pickup, top end but less mileage

I did the carb tuning myself two days back.Number of twists/turns were 4 and a half. I guess,reading sometime in the same thread before that for a stoichiometric mixture( perfectly balanced air-fuel ratio;neither rich nor lean) the number of turns were 3 and a half or 4. Chicane must be knowing that.You can PM him or if he's around he can post directly here.

Battery has gone dead.I feel the electrolyte has dried up. Should normal tap water do? Or,need to buy distilled water from petrol pumps?

because i have a weird problem with my bike, bike is giving a petrol less feeling when ever i hold clutch and switching off, after this the bike just wont start until i try for a very very long time(and i'm guessing that my battery is going to be dead)... by the way this problem vanishes after driving for more than 5 minutes...
Last time i had this problem... it vanished when i gave my bike for servicing and came back after 1k kilometers or something...

Okay,I didn't mean it literally. The problem is when your bike is lying for days the battery or self starter will refuse to start at first. But once thing starts to roll it charges itself and there are no problems, if you are commuting daily.That's very natural.When you send your bike for servicing they top-up the electrolyte level (distilled water) and it's very rare that these kind of problems persist.

My problem is I haven't sent the bike for servicing for last 6 months.I do things like air-filter cleaning by myself or any nearby mechanic. Oil change is done depending on the condition. And rest of the things I take care of..There hasn't been something serious till this day and I am very happy about it. Last Sunday,took my bike to Chandigarh and back..the battery is acting weird since-not taking the self or horns.Even after riding for hours the problem remains unsolved. So,seems electrolyte level is low.

For your problem,try fiddling with the idle-screw.When you clutch it and engine kills itself on its own is probably due to lower set idle rpm. And it vanishes after 5 minutes is because by that time your engine is warmed up..

Yeah,i remember that and yes it looks like a carb setting problem.Get the bike tuned on a Co machine and it will go away.Bikes need a accurate digital tacho to tune the carb and you can't just play with the A/F screw to set it properly.It's tuned in tandem with the idling screw too.Then you have to be experienced enough to hear and make out whether the engine's pinging or knocking while doing it.So get her tuned on a co machine or the second best option is to get it done with a good mech with a digital tacho.My bike due to high compression used to blow out the stock carb(now it has ucal BS29) while starting and all it needed was a good carb tuning.

idling issues

guys i have got a weird idling problem on my bike...d bike idling isn't constant at all...in d morning whenever i start d bike it turns off unless accelerator is used...so if i increase d idling nd ride it sometimes idle's at as high as 3k rpm...its never constant...when it is on neutral d idling keeps on varying constantly by as high as 500 rpm...even when i try to change gears d bike turns off when d clutch is depressed!!
i had changed my oil to semi synth nd its been just a week...does d idling probs has nething to do wid this??

nd yeah this issue stops after i have run a few km's..ne ideas what it might be

Set your idle rpm at 1.3k when the engine is WARM (which means you must ride for like ten minutes before fiddling with the rpm screw)

However, idle rpm on cold starts (like morning) may drop to as low as 1k which may cause the bike to die. Warm the engine at 2k rpm for a min or so and things should be fine.

My two cents on carb tuning: Check the spark plug for the colour. Glazed means lean and black with carbon deposits may mean rich mixture. Brown means optimal mixture. Best is to rotate the a/f screw by 1/4 of a turn (clockwise to make it leaner and vice versa) and check for results by taking a quick ride (of course clean the plug before inserting it to get a good reading). If you are definitely sure about rich or lean mixture then you could even turn the screw by half a turn or one full turn (but never exceed one full turn). Again ride and check. You may need to reset idle rpm after adjusting the a/f screw.

And always make adjustments to a WARM engine.

This method has worked for me and gives me good mileage as well as performance.

Well,the idling rpm is not set correctly.Always set the rpm when the engine is hot.Set it around 1.3k,switch off the engine and cross check again whether the rpm needle hovers around the indicated 1.3k rpm!
What engine oil you are using now?

@ social thanks a lot mate... yeah will set the idle at 1300 rpm when the engine is warm..otherwise it just keeps hovering past the 2-3k mark
@ Drifty mate i am using motul 5100 semi synthetic oil as suggested by many here..however didn't get 10w40 grade so had to settle with 15w50

From what you have said it looks like the engine's 'missing' bike feels like it's stumbling right?
Was the carb setting changed?
Was any modifications done to the electrical parts?
Does this happen always,that is when engine's warm or cold?
When was the last time the carb was dismantled and cleaned?
When was the last time the air filter was cleaned?

Hey guys,I am going for the first service of my Apache 180 ABS,covered around 550kms.
I am unaware of what are the things I should b noticing while th bike gets serviced??
And what are the other things I shud take care of ?
I hav been riding bike with not more than 60kmph during this period,can I drive at a speed more than that after the tommorows service or avoid driving faster till 1k kms??
