Increasing handle bar height will not help in bad roads !! Looking for long travel suspension.

Wanted a Impulse kind of bike with Karizma engine but that isn't street legal. So converting ZMA/ZMR to Impulse type was the idea

That would be tough.. Too much travel and dip in front will make braking a daunting task. Too long front and the bike will be tough to handle in bumper to bumper traffic. It's a balance.. Try to check the geometry of both bikes and try to get the optimal setting.

              Hi,
I am very late to join this thread. I have bought a used ZMR before 6 months for touring. I am using Mico 20w50 SM grade oil for the past 6 months. No issues till date and I always ride single. Yesterday I went with my brother as a pillion and I noticed very harsh vibrations in the rear footpegs after the bike crosses 80 kmph. Is it normal? how can we improve the power of the bike? have anyone did ECU remapping, sprocket change, or anything else? As I am touring mainly I want to make this bike to run in a taller gearing and also need some more power. Someone please help.

                Welcome to xBhp!

                1. 20w50 is too thick. Use 20w40 at max. In fact, 10w40 should be used if the sole usage is on highways.
                2. No ECM mods available or advisable.
                3. Fit a pulsar 220 rear sprocket to gain on top end, sacrificing the low end punch.
                4. I would rather advise you on fitting more powerful 55w bulbs if you haven't already.
                5. Get better rear tire if you're still on stock ones.

                  Thank you Divya,

I have already using Philips Xtreme vision 55w bulbs and light is good but throw is normal (philips claims 30% longer throw.) Also I have some observations.

                  1. The oil cooler fins all were bent down and black color paint sprayed on it. (by previous owner I think). Is there any problem in riding that condition.
                  2. When cold start the engine its very smooth and nice. after riding for some 20 km or more the bike becomes harsher.
                  3. The fairing rattles much. My mechanic says all the faired bikes will rattle. But I don't want that.

Also I am looking to buy a 390 for my brother. Is it comfortable for long travel (around 700 km in a day at the max)
or the new zmr is good.

Yes, the throw is almost same, maybe 10% more. You'd need a projector for longer throw.

Yes, please get the fins straightened. They are meant for cooling oil and bent fins would fail at any cooling whatsoever.

Please refer to my reply above. Get it sorted out first, then we'll look at other possibilities.

Use a rubber tube (cycle waala) and cut out small washers from it. Put a couple of these rubber washers at every joint containing screws.

or the new zmr is good.
Wait for the newer ZMR. ZMR v2 isn't very reliable. There's another one round the corner. D390 is a VFM bike but ideally not 'meant' for long distances. However, people have done >700 km on it in under 24 hours.

                        Wow,
Placing rubber washers is a nice idea Divya.

--> Yes, I am going to clean the oil cooler first using thinner and straighten the fins by using what??? plyer or cutting blade tool I don't know.
Let you know after the process.

I have zeroed in on duke 390 till now. AFAIK from 390 threads in our forum fitting windscreens would help in long drives.

                        Thanks abhi7013,

I was too inclined towards old ZMR but my brother didn't liked the design of the fairing. May some lucky person get the ZMR.

be careful with blade tool or plyer. the fins are soft so go easy.
and yes the windscreen will be better people usually opt for CBR windsceen else fazer (almost direct fit)

sometimes the fairing also rattle as the gap between 2 parts fairing/frame is less and while it resonate it also hits the other one in bumps and vibes. cut small 2cm x 2cm patches of double sided tapes and place between them. dont peel the sticker from both sides. stick only to one side. it will keep the gap intact and will also work as vibes dampener.

Use only a toothbrush and toothpaste! It works.

Does a toothpaste remove the paint from the oil cooler? I think the oil cooler is made of aluminium.

How to straighten the bent fins?

A new unit of oil cooler costs a whopping Rs. 13000 in Hero service center in Coimbatore.

Use normal white color toothpaste (no gel) like Pepsodent/Colgate.
It doesn't harm paint in any way. Wash the oil cooler with simple water first (don't use pressure washers as they bend fins). Use a simple mug and bucket funda.
After washing with plain water, use the toothbrush (with paste on it) and lightly scrub the whole thing. Don't put much force.

Wash it off. Repeat once more if needed.

After washing off the paste, use the same brush to re-align the bent fins with the minutest amount of force (opposite to the bend, obviously) possible! You'd be able to straighten most of the fins if not all!
