I am not sure whether the snorkel played any role. BTW it's too freaking hot nowadays here in Rajasthan & the air is too dry and hot. Could that be the reason, since I notice such knocking only with a pillion during the daytime, not at night.
Please suggest troubleshooting options for such knocking.
2.5k rpm with pillion would cause knocking because you're lugging the engine. Keep the revs above 3.5-4k and accelerate linearly. Also, since you've removed the snorkel, what is the condition of the air filter?

My mech does a decent job. But doesn't value your time. I shared his details few pages back.
Also, have a look at ZMR v2 thread. Abhi has shared good stuff about a new SVC near Yelahanka.

I intend to adjust the valve clearance myself coz the SVC mechs are way too shoddy and finding a reliable honest private mech in Bengaluru is next to impossible.
I was able to adjust the tappets to perfection on my CD100, but this is something that i have never tried, and it does not feature in the owner's manual either.
I have a tappet wrench suitable for CD100, along with a feeler gauge. I guess i would be needing a 10mm ring spanner to hold the lock nut and some wits to take apart the petrol tank from frame carefully to start working on em tappets.

Can the experts who have tried this earlier throw some light...

What is the importance of adjusting the tappets? I asked my mech and he told that tightening the tappets would reduce pick up slightly until it's loose again? Is it true? Is it adjusted just to get rid of th sound? In my previous bike RTR 180 I never adjusted tappets for 70k kms. Please do advise.

When you set the tappets too tight, the valves start to open/close earlier than usual. This will reduce your performance. Also there is a possibility for your rocker arms to get bent when the tappets are set too tight.
If it's set too loose, the valves open/close later than usual. Again this would lead to lower performance. Also there would be a constant buzzing sound from the engine.. Check your manual for the correct adjustment.

Bro tappet adjustment is a important part of the regular maintenance of your Steed.

            1. Loose tappet - noisy/rough engine.
            2. Too tight tappet - low engine performance.

Both scenarios can damage engine, therefore the standard tappet adjustment of 0.1mm is necessary.

No no it varies from bike to bike. That's why I asked him to check his manual

Looks like mrf doesn't supply vyde TL. Not seeing on their web for 18"

Having 18" seems to be a pain in finding tyre !!

The snorkel was put back withing 2 months of removing. And I checked the air filter, it's as clean as new.
I didn't describe it correctly, it's not knocking per se. When I drive solo or with a 40 kg pillion, while releasing the clutch at 2.5k to 3k, the engine jerks and misses a beat, like it's running out of fuel. I can't drive at 4k rpm in narrow streets, there I drive at around 3.5k, it happens a lot at such times. And this problem didn't occur in the past 5 years at all. Till now, my motorcycle had no engine related problems. Please suggest something.

Probably carbon deposits/clogged injectors. Use system g (1ml/litre) or go for injector cleaning.

How can we make sure the bike is well tuned and is in good condition. Any noticeable difference that a rider can figure out.
