Hi guys,

Just returned from Spiti and the Karizma Top chain cover cracked from its bolt (near the rear shocker) a few days back, resulting in a lot of rattling noise when going over small potholes/bumps.

Is it a good idea to remove the chain cover altogether? What difference in maintenance will removing chain cover cause?

Please advise. Thanks.

I've removed chain cover two months ago. I'm using grease- used engine oil mix to lube the chain. You will have to clean the chain frequently. Chain might won't last without a cover like with a cover. But with frequent cleaning and lubing, you'll get chain life almost near to using it with cover. Cleaning becomes super easy after removing cover. I cleaned it only after riding through flood affected roads in kerala. Lube won't last without cover. If you can clean and lube it frequently, I think it'll be ok.

Thanks rydergeorge! The plan is to stick to grease+engine oil mix as well. By lube, do you mean those chain lube canisters?

I've been reading a bit about chain life, does the Karizma R have an O-ring chain or not? I'm not sure as I replaced chain+sprocket at ASC 4500 kms ago. What's a reasonable life expectancy of these Rolon chains?

The rattling sound and chain clanging sometimes against the cover drove me nuts. Bike is much quieter now. Next up on the removal list is the saree guard.

AFAIK, Only version 2 karizma comes with o ring chain. I won't recommend those fancy chain lubes. In my experience, it is better to stick with grease+ engine oil or gear oil. They are really cheap when compared to the so called chain lubes. I'm on the same chain and sprockets thatt I got when I bought my used zma. I've clocked 15 k kms and when I took my bike to my mechanic last time, he said the sprocket hasn't ran more than 8 k kms. That might be because I don't usually rip my bike.

Chain and sprocket life depends on our riding style. I've posted pics of a modified karizma in this forum. The owner of the same bike told me that his chain and sprocket kit lasts for 20k kms without chain cover. Take care when you have a pillion wearing saree or something like that. A saree guard surely helps but there can be problems with open chain if the pillion is not sitting properly.

Chain lubing is just as controversial as engine oils, so to each his own, my thumb rule is;
1. Don't bother cleaning, the debris that can cause harm gets flunged off in action and the debris that sticks behind helps retain the oil.

2. Use only fresh gear oil, during the GQ ride since I skipped packing gear oil in the hopes of keeping luggage minimal I had to depend on roadside mechanics, one chap at Bubaneswar gave me a can of used engine oil and I lubed my chain with it, by next day morning after covering around 800 KM's the chain developed some noise and on observation a couple of links had seized, hence why I always recommend using fresh gear oil. I'm still using the chain in question, runs noisy and runs against something on every cycle but I'm cheap so would keep it for 2.5k more km's until I hit the 25k mark on the odo.

The ngk plug code for karizma is dpr8ea-9
If you are planning to use g power from ngk, it'll be dpr8egp-9. I'll highly recommend to use ngk g power for karizma. Engine will be smoother and a bit more mileage. Buy ngk dpr8egp-9. Available at flybhp.com for 194rs.

Hello Guys,

I have a 2011 Karizma ZMA and want to change my tyres since I again had the fishtailing experience recently even when I was riding quite slow and braked.. at just about 20-25 kmph in the rain.

I am running stock tyres and want to improve the wet-tarmac riding conditions, and preferably improve some cornering confidence too. Current ODO is about 30K kms.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Akheel Delvi

P.S: I posted my query on the tyre-upgrade thread for the Karizma too. But I find this thread more active, hence re-posting here. Please excuse if you think I shouldn't have done that.

Hi Akheel,

I know what you mean. I am not a corner jumkie but grip ( even in rain) is important to me. Plus I wanted make a switch to Tubeless for the convenience of removing the punctures.

With minor modification to the rims, I switched to MRF Messeters and it has been 10k km since then. Absolutely happy with it.

Thanks Rushikesh. Will check them out.

Can you elaborate on the modification that you had to do? Will the local guys be able to do it? Will the tyre shop folks be able to do it?

If you are going for Messeters, then get them fixed from a MRF Authorised outlet which has tyre removal machines.

1. The rim should not have any bends, else the tubeless tyre walls will not have a air tight bond with the rim.

2. Tubeless tyres have a bigger valves(in diameter). So the existing vavle holes on the rim need to be filled (with care) so that it accomadate the bigger vavle.

I checked their price on line.

The front costs 1400/- something.

The rear is

2100/- something.

Karizma shares the same size as New Hunk

Price at mrf outlets are usually higher than listed in site in kerala. Don't know about other places. Messeter has very good reviews. I'm using zapper kurve f 90 section tubeless tyre in front and it has excellent grip.

I replaced my stock tyres to Tubeless Michellin City Pro 2.75 x18 front and 110 x 90 x 18 Michellin Sirac Tubless Rear just a month back.
I have done it from a popular Tyre Dealers in Bangalore named Tyre park. They have all essential tools & machinery to remove & fit tyres to rims.

I had to change the Airvalve to make it compatible to Tubeless tyres as previously i had Tube Type Stock .

Total Costed me Rs.4600 /- including valve /labor charges.

The tyres feedback is tood good . Dry & wet grips are both a lot better than stock. In terms of cornering ; i felt it is way better than stock .

Only the cons i see is .. a thread thin contact is happening with swingarm for rear tyre. ( negligible and can be ignored.)

Now i have moved to different level of PSI Front : 30 ; Rear :40 (Previouly it was F:25 ; R:33)

Anybody suggest ; what should be the PSI with Tubeless tyres for ZMA.
