    • hi friends.

got first service Done, last week. and mech told me that now i can go like 60 kmph. as i am doing run-in. so slowly going towards 60. n really enjoying the thump.
about the silencer colorize thing. that day there were 3 electra and 1 std at the service center. i noticed 3 of them having similar brown colour. so there is nothing to worry i guess.
and today i visited to the service center to check engine setting. it was quite Fast. so he made it slow. bytheway i saw there that they removed the name Electra and its price from the board.

So.. i guess now Std n Electra are no more

        • Congrats to the new Bull owners. My Electra 5S walked out of the showroom on 23rd October 09 and clocked 2200 km in the first month. The second month I took easy so it has totalled around 3700-3800 km odd. Mileage is coming to around 39-31, the last time being an exception at 35. About the changes undergone:
          * TB type backrest to accomodate two healthy persons
          * Headlight assembly change to accomodate H4 halogen bulbs. Much needed mod!
          * Diamond crashguard fitted 2 days ago
          * Rough surface seat cover added
          * (Planned) Fork full gaiters to complete the macho look! (they look sissy now)

You can find the service and mod details in the link in my signature below.

            • Engine breather pipes

Hi, I can see two black rubber pipes rising from the crankcase top (behind the engine block). One of the pipes goes into the right side air filter box. The second disappears somewhere... What is the purpose of the second pipe?

                • Guys - a lil dated reply... but about the golden colour... mine is a STD 350 and got this colouring in the first three months... got the timing check done and after that the colour spread stopped..

But it is permanent colouring and if we don't want that now - gotta change the silencer only... no other option...

                  • winter tip for all Cast iron engine bike owners ( std, electra ). remember to keep a decent amount of play in the decompression cable, and also in the clutch cable, or else with the cold, the cable will contract, and will cause the valve to remain open, and you wont get any compression.

Also the clutch cable if too tight, will cause the clutch to slip, again the bike wont start.

I just helped out a couple stuck in the cold because of the decompression cable being too tight.

Thanks for the tips JD. Does the drop in compression result in sudden power losses at low speeds? Coz I am experiencing that for around 15 mins after cold starts.

                        hi.
sorry for late replying. about the golden colour, my electra is one month old and i am posting a image so we can get it correct. is this colour is same as in your bike. right now it is like that but its getting darker. even first service is done. but this colour is still growing. i don't know about the timing check which you are talking about.
i think the colour is permanent. and we have to change it. but i don't know who will pay the cost. we or Royal Enfield..

Hey, mine too has the same color at the same spot. Got my first service done. The engine was fast and now have made it slow. The coloring is permanent and let it remain. Also after service, the bike gave me couple of back kicks

                          • ^^ I think your bikes are running rich, hence the color. If you see black spots, it could be bad --- they are mostly cos of overheating ( excessive clutch use being the primary culprit from what I have seen).
Running rich is not really bad, but it would be good to get ur bull examined by an experienced mech.

                            • Standard-350

                              Hi friends

I am a fan of RE Std-350 for a long time; as long as I started riding some 20 years ago. My first two bikes were 1995 Suzuki Samurai (sold 2003) and 2003HH Passion (sold 2009), both good in their own way. When I heard that Std-350 will not be available from 2010 onwards, sold the HH passion and presented myself with brand new Standard in Aug 2009.

After a long wait of 23 days after booking, took delivery of the standard-350 on 31st Aug 09. Even though I had booked the "Punjab' version with Electra handlebars, seat and indicators; that model was not in the 14 bikes my dealer received from RE in the weekend. So, I changed my decision and opted for the basic version, which is having higher seat, normal low handlebars and orange color indicator lamps. The total cost of the vehicle + tax + Insurance + 'other charges' came to Rs. 79,472/-. Rs. 1000 was also paid for crashbars, saree guard etc.

I went to the dealer's service center in the morning and selected the bull with the help of an experienced mechanic. After selection, came to the dealer's office and paid for the bullet. As instructed, I went to the dealer's office at 5pm to take delivery.

My tryst with my bull started the moment after it was taken delivery. The bike would not start. The horn and indicator would not work. The ammeter was showing only tiny deflection; there was no problem with the fuse. A small crowd gathered and soon, all sort of opinion was floating around like 'dead battery, rectifier problem, blown fuse, short circuit, water in the starter unit etc'.

Soon the mechanic from the service center was called and he identified the problem as dead battery. The battery was removed and another was replaced and "presto", the bull started smoothly. The whole drama took one hour. Next day started the vehicle with the second kick (with choke on) and took the vehicle to temple and prayed really hard. Also went to the dealer for replacing with now charged original battery and fixing of crash-bars & Saree guard.

Religiously obeyed the instructions from Cybersteering.com of Shri. Gurunandan on running-in the bullet. Minimized the use of bullet in the city to the minimum and took her out on the highway in slow speed everyday in the morning 6 am-7am period for about 20-25 kms with some rest in between. Kept the speedometer under 40 for the first 200 kms; and slowly increased to ~45 till 500 kms, the first service period. After first service, slowly increased to 50 kmph till 1000 kms. Then took her up slowly to 60 kmph; it reached some 1400 kms on the odo, when speedo touched 60. Completed second service at 1800 kms (3 months) and now after four months and some 2400 kms still have not crossed 60.

Initially I used to find false neutral between second and third on a regular basis. After some thought, decided to strictly follow the speed limits mentioned in the owner’s manual; below 20 in first; 20-30 in second and 30-40 in third and above 40 in fourth. Now after second service, almost all such hiccups are gone. Now very rarely I find the false neutral between the gears.

The problems encountered so far are:-

                              1. Battery dead on the first day; charged and replaced by dealer next day

                              2. Footrest wobbling after two days; tightened at ASC

                              3. The transparent tube coming out of air filter unit was found hanging; ASC mechanic pushed the other end to carburetor with a smile when I took her for tightening the footrest.

                              4. Distinct clattering noise heard from the CB points; corrected at the first service at ASC. This problem did not go away completely and during second service ASC removed the points and did something to the cam; now the clatter is gone.

                              5. Some noise from the primary drive chain unit; my local bullet mechanic identified the problem as loose chain; corrected at the first service at ASC.

Initially around first service I used to get a mileage of 22-25 kmpl which increased to 28-30 kmpl after second service. Last week, checked the timing and ‘tuned’ the bullet with the local mechanic. It was running rich; there were some black deposits in the plug. Will again check mileage in a week.

So, my friends, I have some (stupid?) doubts.

                              1. Some tappet noise is heard from the beginning and now I feel the volume increased. The ASC as well as the local mechanic advise me to wait till the third service for adjustment. What to do?

                              2. The engine oil level is not decreasing with use. Changed the oil at the time of first service and second service. However never felt the need to top it up. How to check whether oil is circulating well?

                              3. I have not ridden the bullet for a long trip (>50 kms one-way). Can I take her out now or wait till some 3000 kms?

                              4. I feel the engine and exhaust are getting hot. But how hot is really hot? How to know engine is overheating? Or am I paranoid? There is a brown mark on the exhaust some 2 inches long and some 3 mm wide. Other than the above the exhaust is really shining.

                              regards

ps: Mods, This is my first post and I am really sorry you find the post too long.

                              • Thanks guys for replying.

hey subushady i also think that the colour is permanent. when i was at service center for first service. i asked so many times to the head mech about this, but it seems like the common problem for them. no reaction nothing. (i was the first one there on that morning, and then later i saw 5 electra which of them 3 had the same colour). so i thought its normal.

well no back fire yet i think its electra thats why. but yes my bull's battery is like dead in the morning. i have to kik start. but before the first service i used to start it in like 3 kiks. sometimes only one . but now every time it takes like 10 kiks. every time. i dont know why ? b-coz engine was bit faster before the first service.
and everytime the bike is parked and i start it again (after any amount of time - any time of day, even in the afternoon), it still takes around 5-8 kiks to start. no use of the self - battery is dead

also when i bought my bull the mech had told me to avoid giving throttle immediately on starting - to leave it as it is. but now whenever i start it i need to warm it up by pushing the throttle otherwise she stalls.

                                any ideas why this happens?
