  • purpose of breather box

Hi, there are two black rubber pipes which rise from the crankcase top and connect to a black platic box (located behind the left side toolbox). The manual names this as Breather Box. What is its purpose? Are we supposed to clean/ maintain it?

Hey! I have been riding the very same you are waiting for. I have been riding it for a months time. Me completely in love with it. I am sure you are gonna love it as well. And hey! Maroon is the best choice amongst the 350s. Thank God you did not go for the black one. Black does nt ooze out the retro feel as much as the Maroon or even the gray for that matter.

BTW... I think you would not go for alloys once you get to own your bike. The bike looks the best when in stock. And the normal spoked wheels always suits the best for any bullet. Especially for classic as each and every aesthetics have been intended to take you way back to 1940's. Congrats once again bro!

Yup, it should be cleaned every service... actually you could drain it every 3000 kms, and get it washed with petrol every alternate service

^^ alloy wheels spoil the look of the bike... here only villagers do it... dont spoil the spoked look of the bike.. unless its some mind blowingly awesome design

You're talking about the breather pipes. The pipe with the larger diameter will ventilate the crankcase by connecting it to the breather box/catch can. The catch can catches the oil and the vapors that the crankcase vent blows out. It is mainly meant to stop the bullet polluting the earth with oil which otherwise would be deposited on the ground/roads. The pipe with the smaller diameter is to bring back oil/oil vapours back to the engine through the timing chest, from the catch can. The catch can should be cleaned during every service although this routine is greatly shortened on Bulls with heavy blow by. The same applies to the hoses.

              Cheers,

              Jay

              • Prices of all Bullet models have increased by around 8 K.
Std is now costing 90K on road and Electra 5S is costing 1.07 lac on road.

Also Std is called Std 350 S Class.

Even the website of RE has changed. Now I can see a tab saying Retired Models. It is not opening now. Guess they are working on the same.

                  • Upgraded to Thunderbird

This is Pranesh from 'Namma BengaLuru'... I bought an used Thunderbird (2002) yesterday and the ride's been just awesome !!!

I'd bought a Honda Unicorn during Dec 08 and plan to keep both the bikes

The transition from Uni to Bull is unimaginable and its fair not to compare both the bikes... I might post the detailed transition sometime soon... The ride's been just too good till now (Just about 30 kms till now)... Any tips / engine oil from experienced bulleters would be great

                    Cheers,
                    Pranesh

                    • ^^ just put it thru a complete service, check condition of cams, oil pump shaft, rockers, tappets etc.

-Check primary chain, clutch, pressure plates, main chain, sprockets etc.

How many kms is the bike run???

                      - Replace spark plug if condition is old, and air filter as well.. better to start with new things so you know the replacement interval yourself.

                        • Engine shuts down while going downhill

Hey Jay, thanks for the info.
Folks, got another query: have observed several times that the engine shuts down if I am going downhill (long stretch, high speed) in neutral gear. Why does this happen? Does more air rush into the engine bacause of the speed, thereby making the mixture leaner?

                          • ^^ firstly dont do that, you will lose control of the bike if you have to brake suddenly or swerve to avoid something.

Secondly, if its shutting down when coasting downhill, and not otherwise at idle, then the float is getting stuck during the downhill orientation of the bike. Other wise your idle is simply set at a lower rpm, which causes the bike to shut down.

Thanks jd666. Hmm... will go downhill really slow a couple of times. That should clear up the float mystery, hopefully.
Ok, got other queries (yes, still more ). Bike keeps stalling if stuck in a long traffic jam. Is it because of the first gear - half clutch use for a long time? Is it acceptable, or some serious problem? Everything becomes normal as soon as i get a clear stretch of road again.
Also, can anything be done to the company-fitted long barrel silencer to get more thump and sound? I want more aural delight, but love the chromed expanse of the long barrel too.

                              • Guys, just an update. I contacted Dealer yesterday to enquire about my CL350 status (here in chennai). He said 2 more months without even asking me when I booked or what color. Then I gave him details & color (Maroon); He then said may be you could get yours sooner than others, as I believe black is most sought after. Anyway, no other option for me other than waiting.

                                P.S. I booked on 8th Jan 2010.
