• Re: Pulsar 200 DTS-i

I agree with tanay, 250 will be a small increment indeed.

I have owned CBR 250 for 18 month (sold now) and it is more powerful and torque is very much noticable,
I love Bajaj as a brand, but there is no comparison with Honda when it comes to refinement.

Mine is a case of downgrade from cbr 250 to 200 dtsi, but trust me KTM 390 series might be a better upgrade in IMO.
test ride both cbr and 390 back to back and see which serves u well in terms of power and ergonomics.

now, about the 200 clutch delay that i mentioned earlier was indeed clutch shudder caused by
worn out clutch assembly gear, thanksfully clutch housing wasok so i have replaced just the clutch assembly for Rs 1450 and bike is running much better, no cluth delay whatever, have changed oil to Motul 20w50.

next in line is a 220 carb, its just causing a lot of curiosity, i have to put it it once )

Also, the exhaust had some issues, unable to find it any where in ncr, have ordered it, lets see what happen,
till than it has been welded and doing the works, but looks plain ugly. will certainly need replacement down the line
once i go in for the complete cosmetic job .. but that will begin only after all engine/technical issues are sorted.

1) cylinder/ piston/ valves/ cam chain
2) clutch works (done twice, first 2 months back with just clutch/pressure plates change. and second one, last week with whole assembly)
3) chain set
4) brakes - master cylinder/ braided hose/ calipers
5) cdi along with coil
6) front suspension serviced and cone set changed

the second part is cosmetics.

front mudgaurd and fairing are the only things that have been changed for now. i might get the tank painted or go for a new one if pocket permits.

Parts painted at home

1) clamp( painted black)
2) front suspension
3) front/ rear alloys
4) coil cover/ sprocket cover
5) engine / head/ head cover

Paint used is formula 1, and its holding up for now, no chipping as of now. fingures crossed.

4) meter wire ( have ridden past 9k rpm, but it dosenot show speed)
5) tank/ rear cowl...
6) wiring

hopefully this should do.

Here a one pic of front angle, along with my 2003 p180 dtsi (proud first owner)

What should be the ideal price for a 2007 Pulsar 200. First owner. With 35k on the ODO. I have been offered 18k.
Also what are some common problems that I should look for?
Thanks in advance.

Proud owner of P200 since last six years and it is still my daily ride. But depreciation has taken a hit and machine has lost its charm. Engine is rough, faulty timing chain, carburetor float pin not very free, loss in compression. Need a total upgrade. Don't want to sell it

Change gears and race ahead!!

My opinion: don't buy it. You can see the effort it took to rebuild another bike in mehuel's posts above. This bike is has an unrefined engine, is not particularly powerful, average handling and FE. Plus its a Bajaj which is basically a dicey proposition even when bought brand new while you're contemplating a second hand one with 35K on the odo.

Of course if you still want to go for it try cut the price down to say 15K or so. There's no resale value at all.

18k is decent, as tanay said, see if you can bargain a bit further, say to about 15-16k.
as for things to check,

1) put the bike on stand, start it and see if it idle correctly. the engine note should be a continous beat like tik tik tik tik...

2) once engine has settled in idle, rev it gradually upto 7 - 8 k rpm a few times and and try to keep it there and see if it is emitting smoke,
also listen to engine sound/crank noise, and check for missing beats there too. if not sure show it the bike to a mechanic (engine rebuild can
cost upto 4-5k)

3) rotate both front and rear wheels and check for misalignment(new ones can cost around 4k each)

4) condition of tyres too

take it for a ride and chck for clutch operation, clutch release should be uncluttered leading to smooth momentum gain in acceleration, check for the ride quality/suspension, noise from handelbar, engine smoothness.

these are a few expensive bits.
other things would include front disk alignment and brake operation,
fornt fork oil leakage/alignment,
cone set noise/play,
chain set,
and this is important: ask the owner if the coil or cdi has ever been changed, there is a way to check the coil by looking at the wire coming out of the hub and the rubber cap, if there is gap between the cap and wire cover exposing the wires inside, its been changed with most like a local part
rusting around battery is a common problem, remove the battery cover and check for extent of damage. wiring harness is another thing, but is dont know how it can be checked, i recommend if you buy it, the first thing to do would be to get the wiring checked and replace if needed

i might be forgetting a some things, fellow bhpians please throw some light on it
hope it helps

and as tanay hinted, it can be tiresome. be prepared to spend on it, you can never know what surprise is waiting around the corner.

i know it sounds stupid but my philosophy was this:
i was retiring my 11 year old 100000 kms+ 180 from touring duties, and until recently it didnt have any issues, but 4 months back had an episode with it 30 kms before Chandigarh, so decided it has had enough and should spare it for office commutes and around town works.

always loved 200s, wanted one since it was launched, in red
i was able to find decent 200s in 32- 35 k bracket, but i just wouldn't be confident in taking a bike like that on touring and be stuck with some problem 100 of miles away from home. so i decided to buy the cheapest one i could find, didnt even bother if it started or not. i simply wanted to buy a lemon, a cheap lemon and lemon i found, to rebuild it from ground up. kept a budget of 20 k to rebuild(bike cost not included), not sure how much has been spent till now, but its much below that i am sure. i have all the bills, will add up some day.
with engine works done, i might have to set a new budget for cosmetics

but the journey so far looks promising.
will be heading to mountains soon.

Here is an ongoing thread on buying used bikes:

Here's another instance of the ever-persistent Bajaj niggles.
I was riding around when my bike's console decided to pop into the headlight assembly. It simply sunk in leaving a hole.

I opened it to find that all four plastic mounting points of the meter console assembly had broken.
Used four metal hanging brackets as jugaad.

A week before, the screws (2 on the left side) that attach the tail light unit to the plastic shell disappeared leaving an annoying rattle from the rear of the bike. I had to ask around four Bajaj spare parts offices before I finally got the screws and fixed them back.

A month prior to that I had to replace the front caliper assembly. The bite in braking was just not there. New one is the Bybre caliper.

A while earlier I also had to replace the front sprocket because a tooth was broken and was making noises.

These instances are just an example of the maintenance demands of a bike that is used mostly for office commutes and that too at a super relaxed pace.

50K Kms from 2008 to now, thats roughly 7142 kilometers per year. Rather less eh?

Yes the bike's doing fine and gives me about 60 km/l (not kidding) on the highways where I keep it at ~78-80 or at 6K rpm.
This April I'd done Bangalore-Gokarna-Goa-Kemmangundi-Bangalore and I got 900 kilometers from one tankful of (super-cheap) Goa petrol.

I just wish it could do all-day 100 KM/hr but as that isn't possible I'm looking for an upgrade and will keep this as a city bike. Perhaps the CBR 300 or some other *SMOOTH* engined bike.

Have you cleaned the tank as well? Maybe try a different petrol pump for some time?
Also you could look at the tank lid breather hole that can sometimes become blocked leading to vapour lock.
I think you could check these for a start.

One more thing guys, it is mentioned in the service manual that de-carb has to be done at 30,000 kms. IMO this is really a very short period which is not required. It can be done at around 50,000 kms, where you come to know the proper condition of the block/piston or earlier in case your silencer is smoking. Saying this from the experience with my bike, P200 - 2007 model which has done almost 1,40,000 kms with one clutch plate work, 2 chainset changes, 1 timing chain/tensioner, cam-shaft change and 2 tire changes during this period.
The chain-set change was due to rough riding where i broke the chain twice. Even my mechanic advices me against opening the head saying that this hampers the compression of the bike, although he is ready to do it since he is paid for it. One more thing i would advice is to change the clutch cable to that of P150 which is longer in length and provides a better play. P200 owners must have noticed the stock clutch cable is a bit tight around the T-Bar, which ofter hampers the clutch play and will lead to early worn out plates. Well this is just my experience with my bike. All the best to all the existing P200...one more thing, i use Motul 15W50 Mineral.
