• wheel bearing greasing

hello all,

My dazzler just completed my 3 years of ownership with 42K on odo. So I thought may be I should open & get both front & rear wheel bearings re greased as I have never done this before in all those 42K kms of running. Actually both my wheels are running fine (freely) & also there isn't any find of looseness or play in them. So, mechanic suggested that there is no need to open them unnecessarily for greasing.

Now, should I get them greased right now, or will it be better to clock some more kms & then directly get them replaced. Has any one done this? If yes, then at what odo reading?

Similarly, I am also thinking of lubricating/replacing the swing-arm bush though I am not having any kind of issues with swing-arm or bike's handling. Still will it be wise or is it necessary to do this at 42K kms?

Appreciate the preventive maintenance kind of attitude in you

Regarding the bearings, if they are lubricated for life-time kind of bearing, greasing is not required until they give up. But personally I'd suggest greasing. It certainly helps.
Check if there is play or wobbling in the swing arm and you'll know. But swing arm bushes need not be replaced and it does not give up so easily.

You both can try out the Osram Silverstar bulbs. I am currently using them and they are 100% stock replacement, 35/35w HS1 bulbs, retail for MRP Rs125/-. The bulb claims 50% extra light and 20meter extra throw on high beam. My personal experience would be probably 20% extra light at low beam and a proper 20m or more extra throw at high beam. The bulb glows a bit brighter at the cost of filament life and because the filament is smaller, it is closer to a point source and hence can throw a much longer and focused beam. You will notice that the light cut off becomes very sharp (almost akin projectors) at low beam due to better focus and lower scattering. This is the probable cause for better light intensity. Light colour is yellow, same as stock.

Ok so that was my personal experience.

There is one more bulb in the market, very newly launched so I don't know whether it will be available or not. Its called the Osram Night Racer - again 35/35w but H4 bulb. But it will fit dazzler just fine and because there are no electrical changes required, I will call it a stock replacement (I have previously used H4 bulbs on my bike and they fit perfectly fine). It is retailing in bangalore for Rs 565/- . This bulb promises a 50m longer beam throw. And 90% more bright light. The light output has a slight white colour tinge to it. A friend of mine is using it on his RTR and is happy, I have not seen the light or used it personally so YMMV.

Make sure you get original Osrams.

I would say don't try to fix what is not broken. 42000 kms is not that high a mileage and if you live in a place where there are not many pot holes or like if you commute on good highways mostly then there is no reason why you should do bearing greasing or swing arm bush replacement. Let it run for 50-55k and then do these preventive maintenance. For all you know the mechanic might just botch the job and ruin what was a perfectly good part previously.

So I replaced the whole carb unit, bled my front brake, replaced the swingarm bush - one of them was totally busted, I just cannot figure out the reason; Chain Sprocket set at 14K Kms. Hopefully, I don't get to do more maintenance. Fingers crossed.

AFAIK, it would be next to impossible unless you have a secret affair with any of the service advisers or mechanics working there or at least with the spares manager.

Yes that is the ideal way to get things done. You either find out few names and email addresses of your regional service manager's contacts and use it in your conversation or develop a friendly rapport with the SA and mechanic. A classic method of getting things done at service center is purely pestering them around but it requires patience from your end.

Okies.....so as long as there are no issues with the wheel bearings or may be after 50K or so odo reading, I will go for this preventive maintenance. Thanks

Btw, today I inspected my front disc brake pads properly with a help of a small torch. I noticed that the inner pad (one which is closer to the wheel & away from brake piston) has worn out a lot compared to the outer pad.
Last time also when I changed my front disc pads (@ 25K odo) the inner pad had worn out completely while there was very little wear in the outer pad.
At that time my mechanic checked the brake pistons & made sure that both the brake pistons are moving freely.

So, what could be the reason behind this uneven front disc brake pads wear? What should I do now?

I went for Dazzler Air filter replacement today as it was nearing the 15K KMs mark and surprise, surprise when I asked for it, they gave me the Yellow air filter. I read here somewhere in this forum that Dazzy has green one and when I enquired about it, they told me that it was from Unicorn and fits in Dazzy. Also it was cheaper than Dazzy's.

yesterday i had been for a ride of about 190~km i noticed that when i dont accelerate and let the bike go on its own theres a vibration on the right foot peg and sm sort of a noise like smthng is rubbing like the sound of wind or may b like a non lubricated wheel...i cant describe it properly
is something wrong with the bike???
it was a ghat section ride where i noticed this...is some part not lubricated or broken??

The stock filter which comes on dazzler is a green color one which is of viscous type. This filter doesn't requires any type of cleaning & should be periodically replaced @8K-10K kms.
The yellow color filter from unicorn is normal paper filter which requires cleaning by compressed air at every @2K kms.(even this should be replaced at every 10K-12K kms) As this yellow filter is non viscous type, it is cheaper than the green filter.

amitmalve OK, so then nothing to worry about. I generally do my servicing at around 1800 kms, I will ask them specifically to clean the filter as well then.

Also, does nobody have any idea on putting the hooks as I put in the last pic ? CB600F has those hooks but I don't want to take my Hornet for touring. I want to use the little one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If hooks can't be put, are there any alternatives like top-boxes ????

It could be related to brake system, rear worn out or misaligned break shoes, in appropriate tire pressure or even a trivial damper bush missing just below the footrest. If it is a disc break system, you could check the damper on caliper set though this is a remote possibility.

Check the bearings!

Thats a possibility with drum brakes. Dazzy has discs rite?
