The biggest news that hit Indian motorcycling this year was all about the KTM Duke 200 and the Bajaj Pulsar 200NS and while this is indeed a step in the right direction for the industry and enthusiasts, it is but the starting point for much more on the pleasure and leisure motorcycling theme which India has been crying out loud for.
The essence of all these things has got to be affordable performance and the KTM -Bajaj Auto duo are well on their way to further this line of thought. Both partners are well advanced with larger versions of their tarmac terrors, all new machines pushing the envelope using completely different approaches while employing the same building blocks. Last year at a KTM dealer conference in the U.S. there was speculation of an all new small sized machine for Europe and the US which was then tentatively badged as a KTM 350. Things have now moved ahead to a possible launch at EICMA, a.k.a. the Milan Motorcycle Show scheduled for mid-November this year.
The new motorcycle will in all probability be referred to as the 390 Duke, staying in line withKTM’s policy of naming its models like the 990 and the 690. Powering the 390 Duke will be a 375cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled 4-valve engine and feeding it will be an advanced fuel injection system. The basic framework of the 390 Duke will remain similar to its younger sibling, the 200 Duke, employing the same lightweight trellis frame, the gorgeously crafted lightweight swing-arm as well as the same suspension components provided by noted suspension specialists White Power or WP suspension as it is presently known. For sure there will be a scaled up frame and beefed up suspension components as also a revised wheelbase while everything will be enhanced to make the bike a pleasure to ride machine in keeping with KTM's 'ready to race' DNA.
As was also the case with the Pulsar 200NS, one saw the basic engine architecture in theKTM Duke 200 and so should also be the case for the next larger Pulsar which Bajaj Auto officials have oft mentioned without divulging details. The new engine is a large single cylinder liquid-cooled unit with twin overhead cam shafts operating a four valve head. This new unit is expected to deliver, wait for it, 45 genuine Austrian thoroughbreds and while this is top draw there is even more when you factor in the all-up weight of the motorcycle. It is expected that the new Duke 390 will tip the scales at just 150 kilos making for a staggering power-to-weight ratio of 300PS per tonne making it quite simply one of the best lightweight pocket rockets in the world! While other details are sketchy, especially as regards torque and transmission, much of it would be on proven lines and I for one expect a six-speed transmission and supple tuning to make for a very explosive mid-range followed by a near 200km/h capability.

However, there is also the tasty thought on what might be when My mind keeps going back to what Joseph Abraham had answered when I asked him if he could take the triple-spark plug layout to other multi-cylinder units and he had suggested a vee-twin was in the realm of possibility. Just think about a vee-twin sharing the cylinder dimensions of the Pulsar 200NS on a common crankcase and you end up with a 400! In this day and age of downsizing without lowering the performance quotient, this sort of an approach could be just the ticket for KTM and Bajaj to hit the ground running all over the world. Fancy thoughts or fact, only time will tell on the vee-twin concept but the next Duke 390 and the larger Pulsar are closer than one can comprehend. Also Read: KTM 200 Duke gets custom race livery
And while we are in the mood to break out some inside info on upcoming motorcycles, we might as well hand you some more dope on the next big thing in Indian two-wheeler market – the 300-400cc class. Joining the bigger KTM 390 Duke will also be some interesting new models in the same segment from other manufacturers, namely Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki.
Ok, When I said 40-45 HP many guys suggested I am super optimistic. However The image of the engine show here is actually sourced from KTM 950 Adventure!
And expecting a 200 KMPH top speed is way too much. Let 690 Do that first!.
Now this is fantastic news, if true. 45 PS and 150 Kg will easily kill some 250 sales if this one is also packaged in a semi faired/ faired persona.
The second page of the link has an image of V twin engine and has bajaj name engraved on it. Is it the actual Bajaj Vtwin engine or is photoshopped?
It is , It will take at least few more years for bajaj to produce something like this!
The saddest thing is making fun with plug count, have you ever thought how a 200 NS makes roughly 10 HP mre than an FZ 153 and still returns better efficiency in most case , all with a carb!!
Yamaha definitely have some real smart tech, however the where not so good in efficiency and now in last MCN shootout of super-sport The legendary R1 produced 10 HP less than very young RC8 -R and that number of 148 Rear wheel HP is a whopping 24 HP less than the green machine. Before bashing the spark count, lets try to understand is there any purpose it serving.
In no means I am saying Yamaha or Honda is bad or something, Just that we should understand that Bajaj don't have the heritage of These Japs, and still they are giving us nice products in the smaller bike segment.Last edited by kochumvk; 10-26-2012, 11:56 AM.

But I think Duke 390 will be 2lac max On road, and Pulsar 375 will be 1.5lac max on road.

I hope the same too..2L for Duke and abt 1.5L for Pulsar (both On Road Prices)...since the frames and swingarms etc will be the same..with some extra strengthing for suspension etc parts...I am praying....if the specs are anything to go by then its definitely a mini-rocket with serious performance to even upset the bigger capacity bikes. I was reading somewhere and upcoming CBR500 is 47 bhp...but definitely weighting way more than the KTM...bring it on KTM...

Even the Ninja 250R was speculated to be priced at 1.5 Lakhs prior to its launch.. also wasn't the R15 also supposed to make 21 horses back in 2008..??
I hope one gets the drift?

The info in this thread is slightly inaccurate.
As per the new A2 EU Motorcycle license limitations (as mentioned below)
So if this bike has to be approved as an A2 bike, the power to weight ratio cannot exceed 200kW/tonne OR 272 Ps/tonne. This is the exact reason why the 500cc Honda we have been discussing in the other thread also makes just 47bhp.Originally posted by MEDIUM MOTORCYCLELicence category A2 (up to 35 kW, (47bhp) with or without a sidecar, a power to weight ratio not more than 0.2 kW per kg - NB: the bike must not be restricted down from a vehicle of more than double its power). The minimum age for category A2 is 19 years. There are two ways to get this entitlement: 'Staged Access' if you have two years' experience on an A1 motorcycle by passing another practical test. 'Direct Access' if you do not have two years' experience on an A1 motorcycle, by passing a theory test and a practical test.
In its current *speculated* form at 45 Ps and 150kg, the power to weight ratio is 300 Ps/tonne. So to be qualified as a Medium Motorcycle, either the *kerb weight* should increase to 165kg OR the power should reduce to 40.8 Ps (which would be more undesirable
).
Assuming a 14-liter petrol tank and 2 liters of oil, these 2 would add up to only 11-12kg. So realistically, the motorcycle could very well be ~155kg *DRY weight* and not 150kg as is mentioned by our source.
Coming to the pricing, this is about to populate the Medium Motorcycle or A2 Learner class. Pricing would be more than the 250s on any given day. The Honda 250 retails for almost ~1.75 lac for STD & 2lac for ABS these days, the 200 Duke goes for 1.5lac OTR. The A2 bikes are providing roughly twice the performance as compared to the 25Ps Honda/KTM and ABS has been made compulsary on all bikes to be launched after Jan '13.
Any guesses on what OTR prices these bikes should command?Advice is a form of nostalgia.

I think the 45ps and 200kmph claims are a little too tall.
Realistically speaking, I'd say 40ps, 170Kmph, 2.5-3.0L OTR!
Everything aside, my biggest hope from this bike is at least 12+ litre tank, anything 15+ would be ideal. But knowing how the KTM's are meant to be, 10-11 litres is the best I can expect. Would love for it to have an at least 300 Kms range on a single tankful._________________________

I will stick 160-165 max as top speed, since 170 is where the 690 struggles.
And yes 40 is good enough for a single. It is less likely that it will weigh more than 690 ie 150Kg I guess.

Antz: Isn't it easy to virtually bypass License Category A2 Power to weight rules?
Let a lightweight bike making 47 PS, be loaded with a large capacity fuel tank, and lots of unnecessary mud guards, leg guards, flaps, etc. which are user-removable, so much until it becomes the required weight for homologation.
Large capacity tank would mean that bikers would have the choice to fill in lesser fuel resulting in lesser weight than the one dictated by A2, and useless removable parts to decrease the weight further, thus staying far away from the true wet weight of the motorcycle.
I know very well that the EU keeps an eye on modifications sold by the company itself for license category bikes, but a large fuel tank and user removable parts won't land the company into trouble, will it?
Given that the Duke 200 also sells for around 1.4L now (after the hike), this bike might well be around 1.9-2.4L I expect. We know how Bajaj has exceeded Power to Money ratio among the competition, whether it was Pulsar 180 classic, Pulsar 220 or the Duke or NS.---

Also, anything above 150km/hr on a street bike would be very stressful for the rider.Originally posted by kochumvk View PostI will stick 160-165 max as top speed, since 170 is where the 690 struggles.

Please, keep it like that KTM... 150kgs would be just sweet.
and don't forget pillion rider comfort (keep the split grab rail plus give us wider seats, sort of like those on the 690).
Also, can we have an analog tacho?
