The phone was answered by a busy sounding girl who said that they could sell the bike to me under a temp registration and then I could register later at the Bangalore RTO. (This was also suggested by someone in this thread).

But she said that the 'minimum' waiting period was 3 months! That is too much time for a niche product like that. I can only see two reasons why:

    1) CKD orders are usually pain in the behind for global factories working hard to deliver their regular export commitments. Since this is a 2010 model, the factory must be busy with first being able to ship out the global CBU orders. And then when the production pressure eases out a bit, they would start looking at the CKD orders from Bajaj. If this logic stands true, then I rather wait for the Bangalore launch to happen in a couple of months, and then get my delivery in only a month or less after booking.

    2) Bajaj is trying to play safe by making the Ninja 250R only against confirmed bookings. If this is the case, then they are making a big mistake. A wait period of 3-4 months for a bike which comes off a mass production assembly line is just too long. I wonder if people will have that kind of patience. I could understand if this was a model which was selling like 50k units a year, but Bajaj plans to sell only a 1000 bikes in a year.

Though, in my personal opinion, it is point 1), with Kawasaki unable to deliver CKD orders in the few initial months of the 2010 250R production. Just my two cents...

I do feel too that Bajaj is playing safe, even in the city where the manufacturing/assembling happens. First few bikes in Pune got booked quite quickly and the people approaching the showroom for booking now are probably being given the time limit of 4 months or so. 4 months is an overwhelmingly long wait by any standards.

Regarding mine, as I have repeated before, I am yet not sure whether I will get it in the very first lot (as mine is a black so they hope a slightly quicker delivery) or it will take 1.5 months or so.

    • Imports are not that easy. They have to ship a certain quantity to cover the costs. They cannot send them in 10's or 20's.

and especially if the CKD's are coming from a plant that has to supply for the international market and be ready for the launch in 2 months, supplying good numbers to a new market with so many questions in mind about how many would really sell and how well the service can be delivered... and also uncertainties about the supply of spare parts... I am sure Kawasaki would want to watch their every step very carefully.

The Baby Ninja has the potential to do the same to Kawasaki & to Indian Premium Biking scene what the City did to Honda and to Indian Premium Car scene.

      • having ridden both, the GT250 and the Ninja 250 extensively, all i can say is that the Comet is still a compromise if you wish to own a thoroughbred international level true-blue sports motorcycle. (Please do not categories naked and sports here, as our Indian industry has a long way to go before we can do such categorization). The Comet does not move beyond 145km/h and the the 120 to 145 dash also takes considerable time compared to the Ninja.

The Ninja is an out and out sports motorcycle and though it is a beginners bike abroad, in our infant stages of motorcycling in India, its still the performance king. It is expensive on paper and the 2,80 plus tag DOES NOT get justified with its specs and overall performance.
But then again, this bike is the most suitable sports motorcycle for India because of its versatile nature to adapt to the rider's needs without a hitch. Be it Touring, Sport riding, stunting or even commuting and posing outside cafe's.

I think, all those who have the money or have been saving up for a decent 250cc bike, should go ahead and get themselves a Ninja without any second thoughts. After havin spent a lot of time on the saddle of the ninja, I have come to realise that it will be a lot of fun and each time you wring that throttle, you will only realise its (maybe a lil more than needed) money well spent... nevertheless.

You will get as many new theories as the number of calls you make in the Pune PBK showroom. They will be sure of what is happening only when 'Bajaj officials will come back after Diwali leaves'.

Some good notes there... thank you. But most people won't understand anything beyond Looks, CC, Mileage and BHP and in that order. Expect someone to pin your post up and comment on it

The showroom ppl are liars . I once asked (I knew the 2nd lot 220 had come) the person at the reception when can I buy the 220 , she said sir the bike is not available. I asked her to turn around and said "then what is that" . (Guy brings red 220 to the front of the showroom)

They lie through their teeth and still look innocent

Couldnt agree more! They did the same things for Ninja bookings also. After the bike was officially launched, they kept telling all those who called them up that the bookings didnt start and they were waiting for Bajaj HO to tell them when to start.
Later, I came to know that the bookings were started from 8th (or even probably from 7th) and yet they were not revealing it.

If thats the case, what should to be done then? Waiting doesnt seem to be an option.. Not for the Ninja atleast.

Ppl have also been asked to wait for 4 to 5 months too. The problem is that every pro biking showroom had a quota of X bikes. Once these are sold they have no idea when they are to recieve their next lot of bikes. ( I think a consignment of only 50 to 60 bikes made it into India ) No one, except a considerably responsible bajaj guy, knows when the next consignment is to be shipped to India again.

There is discrepancy in the delivery dates of Bikes belonging to the SECOND CONSIGNMENT and not to the Bikes belonging to the first consignment. The slight chaos regarding the delivery of the first consignment bikes is due to varied vacation periods of the RTO offices in diff states of India.

While that is true I know for sure that my bike is to be delivered on Friday the 23rd. I could have picked it up on 22nd but I cant due to my own personal reasons. My bike is already there with them. insurance and registration got delayed due to diwali vacations for the RTO guys.

Now I know of some friends who were told by the Showroom that the bike isnt for sale yet ! They had told me the same. You just gotta make small talk with them. Make your intentions of buying the bike very clear to them. I returned back home after talking to them and about an hour later the showroom guy called me and said " you are the second person we are calling since we thought you were genuinely interested. Till when can you pay the booking amount ? "
The problem is these showrooms are getting visitors by the dozens ( i saw it by my own eyes ). So much so that you just see a crowd of ppl encircling the bike to the extent that you dont see anything of the bike from any angle. And then some have stupid questions to ask in a derrogatory manner.
                        " wouldnt I rather buy a 500 cc for 1 lakh 17 Thousand than buy a 250 cc for 3 lakhs ?? "
I believe the guy was meaning to say an Enfield Machismo LB. Needless to say this comparision = epic Phail !!
Then there was this other guy who was wearing gold all over him. He said he had loads of cash ready in his pocket but he first insisted on a test ride of 10 Kms. While his demand was not irrational the guys at the showroom couldnt oblige him. So he pissed at them and went with an air.

The responses you are getting from the showrooms are a direct result of the number of morons that have walked in the showroom before you did with your genuinity.

Good luck finding a showroom who havent sold all of their first consignment bikes. I am sure there are some in some remote pro biking showrooms.

P.S. I spoke to the Vice President of Bajaj Auto India limited and he said they dont have a time frame for the launch of Ninja ZX 6R at all !
so dont expect it to be launched within 6 to 7 months.

P.S 2 : Oh yeah...when u r making the small talk with the showroom guy do not tell him that you need finance for the bike. There are 100s who are in the line who are ready to pay the full amount accross the table. He wont call you if you are enquiring too much about financing options.

Yes, I agree to the fact that they are checking how keen a person is in booking the bike but in this process, they might have already lost of couple of interested buyers. However, thats not a problem for them as they have got more than enough number of bookings with them.

Congratulations in advance on getting the delivery on 23rd of this month..
I am eager to know the tentative time frame when I will get mine (I booked it on 11th).
