After the roaring success of the Baby Ninja 250, Kawasaki is turning on the heat in the superbike market along with Indian partner Bajaj Auto.
It’s been merely six months and already 500 such beauties are plying on the Indian roads to excite the market.
The top officials of Kawasaki told NDTV that there will be atleast 3-4 new super bikes launched over the next 12-24 months, either as completely built units or in a knocked down form.
According to sources, the next in the line could be Kawasaki 600 cc super bike.
With the opening of the new office, Kawasaki will be able to offer a whole host of offerings to the super bike lovers in a short span of time and as far as Ninja 250 goes, the company is already talking about doubling the production capacity to 200 units a month within a year’s time.
Hiroshi Takata, Sr VP of motor cycle and engine at Kawasaki Heavy Industries Limited, said, "IKM is expecting its release of several super sport, sport and cruiser models, primarily in the 250 cc class or greater, to drive sales up to around 1,000 units in 2010.”
These super bikes will be sold through Bajaj's Probiking showroom and will be assembled at the company's Chakan plant.
Now since the company’s new office would be located at Pune, both partners will look at bigger localisation opportunities to lower costs and also, the partnership in not restricted to India. Bajaj and Kawasaki are exploring various options of joint manufacturing, assembling and capitalising on each other’s distribution network in South East Asia, Africa and Latin America. Rajiv Bajaj, MD of Bajaj Auto, said, "We are studying a lot of different options. There are a lot of opportunities in the market of Indonesia where both companies have operations. There are opportunities in the markets of Thailand as well." Well, the opportunities are plenty and the superbike market is also expected to grow. With this recent move Bajaj will expand its presence in the super bike segment and Kawasaki will benefit from assembly, sales and distribution network. However, the duo will have to make sure that prices stay as attractive as the bikes.
