Except for a few tiny spots in mudigere, that stretch is a pleasure to be on right now.

Had done this stretch about 10 days back.

            further questions to you :P
            1)Did you take the Sakleshpur-Mudigere-Kalasa(via SH106)-Kuduremukh route ?
2)You remember where exactly the roads are bad ?

I did this a month back .. and I had a horrible time.. (a tanker had overturned and I had to take a 50kms diversion

              • Re: Updates On Road Conditions in South India

Bangalore-Srirangapatna-Byalkuppe-Suntikoppa-Madikeri: Overall good roads, except for the short distance before Yelawala if coming from Srirangapatna.

Madikeri-Bhagamandala-Karike-Panathur-Kanhangad-Bekal-Kasargod: Till KL border(Panathur) roads are okayish. Narrow roads with occassional bad patches, but very much rideable/driveable by any vehicle comfortably. Roads start becoming supergood as you approach towards Kanhangad. Once you you exit Bekal fort dont get to the highway directly, keep following the beach road as much as possible till kasargod, for a peaceful ride.

Kasargod-Manjeshwar-Thhokottu-Mangalore-Udupi: once you enter kasargod, its mayhem, feels like you are in the middle of a mental asylum till mangalore. Road conditions as worse as it can get. Adviceable to attend some meditation classes for patience before taking this road. Once you pass mangalore, its way better, as in the road conditions are better. Road widening work has started again and at many places the four lanes are operational.

Udupi-Kundapur-Maravanthe-Kollur-Nittur-Kattinahol-Sampekatte: Around Kundapur, the worst ever patches in the route taken. avoid as much as possible. From maravanthe you can either take the conventional route via Hemmadi, or proceed towards Baindoor from maravanthe Beach. About 6kms or so from Maravanthe, you will find a IOC petrol station, opposite to that you will find an arch(sorry forgot the name of the place). About 2 or max 3 kms the roads are average, post that its very good narrow roads all the way till Kollur. This saves some 15 kms than going back to Hemmadi. DO NOT DEPEND ON GMAPS, GOOGLE DOESNT SHOW THIS ROAD. ANY HELP REQUIRED IS MINIMAL, NOT EVEN A PETTY SHOP till you connect to Kundapur-Kollur road. From Kollur, roads are good till Shimoga District border, well cemented and is in good condition. POst this roads are average and become worse from Nittur to Kattinahole. Adviceable to avoid kattinahole and connect directly from Nittu to Sampekatte.

Sampekatte-Chakra Dam-Savehaklu-Mastikatte-Kimmane-Thirthalli: If coming from Sampekatte, turn right at the first "BYSE" location board(it has a small sus stop for Confirmation of turn) for Chakra and Savehaklu reservoirs.About 2kms or so, its bad roads. Apart from that rest is easily doable. Just make sure that you are slow enough to counter the gravel effect caused due to excessive rains in the season. Once you are on this road, you will hit a T junction, right goes to Chakra and left to Savehaklu. You need to turn right and come back to the same junction to go to Save haklu. On the way to Save haklu, you will hit a Y fork, right goes to reservoir and left for KPTCL Quarters. There is an inspection bunglow where you need to turn right. From Savehaklu you need to come back to the same IB junction and take the road going towards Kilandur and Karimane. From Kilandur, roads are good till Thirthalli.

Thirthalli-Shimoga-Tarikere-Lingadahalli-Chikmagalur: Good roads all the way.

Chikmagalur-belur-Hassan-Bellur cross-Bangalore: Four lanes "almost" completed till Hassan, except for Hirisave and CR Patna Bypass. Hassan-Nelamangala can be easily done in close to 2 hours.

For people seeking to avoid Shiradi Ghats- Charmadi ghat is in good condition. The intial stretch of ~10kms is okayish. Once Mangalore division starts the roads are excellent.

Hassan-Belur->Excellent as always. They seem to have removed some speed breakers which is good :-)

                  Belur-Moodigere-> Good two lane roads.

Moodigere-Kottigerehara->Okayish with some rough patches here and there.

Mysore channarayapatna : not sure of present condition , but was decent enough a year or two back.

Channarayapatna -Arasikere: odd potholes crop up out of nowhere. Otherwise decent enough.

Arasikere-Shimoga: good two lane roads , four lane post bhadravathi by pass.

Shimoga-Thalaguppa-Siddapura -Sirsi: Good roads till thalaguppa. Bad roads from the right turn post thalaguppa for few kms. Post that its good roads all the way till Sirsi.

Bangalore-Mysore-Gudalur: Old story, decent enough roads. Karakudi Potholes have become worse after rains.Apart from that nothing great about the stretch.

Gudalur-Nilambur-Pattambi-Guruvayoor-Chavakkad-Ernakulam-Moonupeedika-Potta-Chalakudy-Ernakulkam: Gudalur to Vazhikadavu: Bad roads, very time consuming. Post Vazhikadavu good roads all the way till guruvayoor.Guruvayoor to Meenupeedika, decent roads, need to be a tad careful if riding/driving in the night. No sign boards anywhere. We started to search for a place to have dinner and without knowing we were on Moonupeedika-Potta Road. Later thought we'll take the highway from potta and reach Ernakulam. Roads are good though, i mean from moonupeedika to POtta.Post Potta its good fourlanes further.

Ernakulam-Vytilla-Chertala-Alapuzha-Kollam-Trivandrum: Ernakulam to Alapuzha: Almost all existing craters are filled and was surprised to see the condition comparing to what it was a month or two back. Kollam to Trivandrum very good roads.

Trivandrum-Nedumangad-Palode-Ponmudi-Tenkasi-Madurai-Bangalore: Trivandrum to Palode good two lane roads, mostly traffic prone. Palode to somewhere close to Kulathupuzha roads are broken.Post that its good roads, goood roads, all the way till Bangalore/Chennai.

Has anybody rode from Hogenakkal Falls to Male Mahadeshwara Betta? Google Maps says the distance is 48kms and time required is 1 hr 40 mins involving a ferry. Just wanted to have a first hand feedback of this route.
