I have gone through most of the posts and seen you active in replying to most of the queries which everyone has on this particular thread. Good job.

What I have seen in most of the posts in this thread and other thread is people have praised and highly recommended Motul 3000 4T 20W40 and Gulf Pride 4T Plus 20W40 Other good options are Elf Moto 4 Gold 20w40 and yamalube 20w40(which is made by Motul as mentioned by someone on the forum) when it comes to mineral based oil for bikes. Will use Motul 3000 4T 20W40 at the next oil change and see how it is.

The service center had 2 engine oil which could be used Bajaj engine oil and Gulf pride. Gulf Pride 4T was used in the Bajaj Disco by the Bajaj service center and it is running fine. The mechanic at the service center said that use Gulf pride and not Bajaj engine oil and to replace it at 5000 km.

The bike has only run 2500 km as it is hardly used and the engine oil was replaced in Feb 2011. I wanted to replace it at around 4500 km but I read in a few posts that one should replace the engine oil in around 6 months.

My query is should the engine oil in the bike be replaced at a frequency of around 6 months or at the 4000-4500 km are done on the odo even if it is a year or more in the bike. Also for those who have mentioned that the engine oil should be replaced at a 6 months period is there any scientific basis for this(I searched online to check if there is any topic related to this but could not locate anything) or people are sharing according to their experience or what they have heard.

      Thanks for the appreciation..

Regarding your query.. One should always change the engine oil(mineral oil) every six months on a bike.. If you have got FS oil you can even extend to around an year (if you ran the bike at moderate speeds for 2-3Ks only in an year)

There is no particular 'in the book recommendation' regarding this, purely based on experience/logic.

If you plan to keep 2-3 k mileage per year, always run your vehicle for atleast 30 mins continuously per week. this will take away the moisture that condenses in the oil and will lubricate the engine parts and will prevent corrosion. If you are riding the bike for 30 mins per week, you will need to change the mineral oil after six months. If you plan to go out and the bike remains untouched for 3-4 months. Before going out, change the oil and keep fresh oil in the bike. The reason is - Whenever i drain some used oil from the bike and keep it for more than a month, the jar's bottom accumulates a lot of carbon, which is very hard to redisperse and if it happens in the engine it may get entrapped in places you dont want it to. In addition, all mineral oils oxidise in presence of air and the oil will get oxidised even if the bike is standing.

      • Splendor, passion, joy,cd,or any other Hero 100cc bikes does not have a replaceable oil filter.
They have a centrifugal filter and a filter mesh which can be cleaned by draining oil and removing the clutch cover.

I don't know how many of you have seen that but I have seen it when I was emptying all the bottles filled with used oil into a bigger can to dispose it safely.
A thick black colored substance was settled down which is most probably carbon and other suspended particles,so just imagine what would happen if it is left inside the engine for long time unused .

Ok will check it next time , but problem is the oil dealer in my area don't have any kind of Synthetic oil , even he don't know what is synthetic oil He ask just tell me which oil you need 10/30 or 20/40 ( those are his shortforms for 10W30 & 20W40 respectively . )

          • If storing the bike for long periods, its better to drain and fill with new oil and store it, then before using again, drain the oil inside the bike and then refill.

See Fardeen'jee ... we have no hard tests done that oil goes stale on the 186th day of filling on so n so forth etc etc . If that is what you mean by scientific fact . So I'll tell you my rule, the one I follow myself .
With mineral based oils in air-cooled wet-clutch bikes in the Indian plains (most of our bikes) , drop the oil and refill with fresh new oil every 2000 kms or 4 months , whichever arrives earlier , irrespective of frequency of use etc .
You can possibly extend this to 3000kms or 6 months max , again whichever comes earlier . But certainly no more at all .
And 100% as Ashwin has already said , for long storage without use - drop the oil once before storage and fill , and once again before you run it again .
No one's engine has got hurt yet because of quicker oil changes .

              • @ Fardeen,
you better change oil every 2000-2500km/6 months (in case using mineral oil, whatever brand) if you want your engine to last (long). I dont think any xbhpians has examined any oil scientifically, but there are few scientific articles on the web, (Google it!!) mostly which concludes, changing oil at frequent interval is better on air cooled, wet clutch bikes.

                  • Hello, I just got myself a new HONDA CBR 150r almost a month back. Anyways I went in for a oil change at 620 Kms, to tell you the truth the engine started whining a bit nearing 600. I don't know why, but I was expecting the same thing when I took it out of the ASC today, but to my utter surprise and amazement, it rode smoother than butter even at 7-8k RPMS. But on the bill it says THROTTLE 100% Synthetic Engine Oil, is that a problem should I ask them to change it again? Please answer quickly because I do not want to damage my Baby.

well, as per bill, they poured Honda full throttle, which is a synthetic oil.
And there won't be any damage or any problem, continue using it.
                      Congo for the bike btw

Thanks, I was confused because someone at the Ownership thread said that synthetic oil should not be used during run-in period of the bike.

                        • ok how does a 15w40 differ from 10w40 grade at higher temp? which oil will have lesser viscosity at high temperatures?
in long drives if given a choice which will have more operating efficiency? i mean in long drives more than pick up the engine should have better cooling....

it is not that it should not be used. there is no such rule but it delays the time period for your engine to set in properly.
there are manufacturers that fill fs right from the start in their engines.

                              Thanks for bringing this up.

Most of the talk here happens on what oil to use, but no mention of how to dispose of the used oil properly.
There was a post in FZ ownership forum that we just cant dump oil anywhere (drainage/garbage area) as it'll damage the environment

Would like to know the procedure that people here follow to dispose/recycle used oil.

                              • My bikes (CBZ Star) service is due. I would like to know out of the following three oils which one should i go for.

                                Motul 3100 20W40
                                Gulf Pride 4T Plus 10W30
Yamalube 10W40 All purpose performance oil

Regarding Yamalube can i only get it from a Yamaha service station or can i get them in normal shops as well. Also how much is the cost for Yamalube?
