Re: updates on my extreme
Hi Guys,Originally posted by nishesh.kumar View PostI got my xtreme serviced. I'm providing full details below.
1. Engine oil: Changed the engine oil to Gulf pride 4T plus SS 10w30. Took a 10 km ride, found nothing special, but the important thing is it's grade is as per company's recommendation and I have also heard good reviews. Even if it lasts till 1500 kms, then also its full paisa wasool
2. Got the carb cleaned and AFR retuned. I had instructed the mech not to touch the TPS. So he just opened the float bowl, and cleaned all the jets and other parts using compressed air and petrol. I changed the AFR Screw as well with OE.
3. Changed the spark plug to NGK G-Power CPR-8EAGP9. Tip of this plug is way better than the OE.
4. Air filter was throughly cleaned with compressed air.
5. Rear wheel damper were also replaced with OE, since old one were @ their end of life.
I'll post the performance and mileage once it clocks some substantial distance on this setup.
My xtreme is still having a few problems even after the servicing.
1. Rear wheel is not moving freely when rotated manually. Chain was throughly lubed with fresh gear oil and dampers were replaced as well. But still, upon rotating, it stops at one particular point
2. Even after cleaning the carb and air filter along with spark plug replacement, I am getting mileage of 40-42 kmpl
3. RPM was increasing automatically whenever the handle was being tilted. However, mech fixed this issue by providing some free play at the throttle end. Is this method is correct or should I check something else.
4. Previously, I had to use the choke always to start the bike during morning hours, but after the servicing bike starts without choke in 1-2 cranks. Can't say whether the AFR ratio is correct or not.Last edited by nishesh.kumar; 08-01-2013, 10:16 AM.

1. your chain might be over tightened. Loose it a bit from your local workshopOriginally posted by nishesh.kumar View PostHi Guys,

2 & 4. Might be on the rich side, try setting between 2.5 -3.5 anti-clockwise turns from the leanest side
3. Yes that's correct method to adjust RPM increasing when handle is turned either to left\right sideHero Honda CBZ- 2007-2007 Hero Honda CBZ Xtreme- 2007-2013

1. Rear wheel is not moving freely when rotated manually. Chain was throughly lubed with fresh gear oil and dampers were replaced as well. But still, upon rotating, it stops at one particular point
1. Check for Hub/Bearing running dry (under greased) or damage.
2. Check chain freeplay/tension at the point where the chain seems to 'jump' when wheel rotated with hand.
2. Even after cleaning the carb and air filter along with spark plug replacement, I am getting mileage of 40-42 kmpl
Carb Cleaning and replacing spark plug is no guarantee of good mileage. Try tuning the carb as shared by sibun and other members on this forum. Also, if you're running your air filter for more than 8k kms, it is surely time for a replacement. Just cleaning won't do.
4. Previously, I had to use the choke always to start the bike during morning hours, but after the servicing bike starts without choke in 1-2 cranks. Can't say whether the AFR ratio is correct or not.
Why use choke if not required? I am close to 10k kms on my Hunk and it has seen 2 summers/monsoons/winters and nevber ever have I used the choke. The way I warm up my engine is crank and let it idle while I wear my riding gear. I have always followed it as a thumb-rule and it is still going great without any probs. The bike starts on just a light 'touch' of the self-starter. Not even half touch!
@all : I am facing some peculiar electrical(?) issues on my Hunk of recent. When I thumb the starter in the mornings and/or when returning from office in the evenings, (meaning the bike is in rest for some hours) it just refuses to start. The horn/tail light/brake light/high beam/indicators work fine. There is just a light 'click' sound. I have to wait and thumb it 4-5 times for the self to crank up. When it actually starts, it takes just half-push to make the engine come alive. Also, the green (neutral) light/parking light momentarily dims down as I thumb the starter.
My observations:
- it not might be a starter relay problem, as the crank sound is fine and coherent.
- the SVC guys had suggested a battery issue - like battery draining the charge fast, but today on checking the voltage and amperage, the charging and discharging were found to be OK.
- Still to clear any doubts regarding the battery, I got it replaced under warranty. (18 months is due to expire)
- The SVC manager suggests that there might be some wiring issue wherein some wire might be grounding itself.?
Any inputs/suggestions from your end guys?

Re: updates on my extreme
It is the starting relay. Get it changed. I had faced this problem and have changed the starter relay. What happens is the coil which activates the relay that is inside the relay has gone weak, so after 4-5 clicks it is getting enough magnetic field to operate the relay. Change that and problem will go.Originally posted by BloggingWheels View PostAnswers in bolds.

nishes- for rear wheel not moving freely check the rear chain must have been excessively tightened by the svc.
You might be running rich. Tune the carburettor according to my guide.
yes free play was correctly adjusted.
Choke use is not a compulsory requirement. In winter choke needs to be used.
vrm_venkat1- Check whether the spark plug is correctly tightened and also those idiots would have fiddled with carburetor tuning. 1. What happens if I let it be? I mean what are the long term implications of having such a faulty relay?
2. How do I check the same (or magnetic field) at home? Any special instruments apart from a multimeter needed?
3. I wish to have the relay changed under warranty but the service guys are not willing to do it
- What the the price of the same?
4. After installing a new battery, the engine starts at once I thumb the self-starter. But the neutral light and/or the pilot light still dims simultaneously. Members please confirm if they face a similar issue of dimming of the neutral 'green' light / dimming of other lights when cranking the motor.
5. Is it possible that there is some grounding of any wire happening? (I don't think so, still need a second opinion)
Thanks

Re: updates on my extreme
Here's an update:
Found ime to visit the Spare parts dealer. The relay costs 222/-
The reason why the SVC guys won't change it is they suspect that the relay is absolutely OK. The also agree a bit to the fact that there might be some some issues with the magnetic field induction. My question is how will the field induction get rectified if I change the relay? Members please share your two pieces on this for the benefit of other members (and me too :P )

Relay uses an electromagnet to mechanically operate a switch mechanism.Originally posted by BloggingWheels View PostHere's an update:

Low current from the starter button powers the coil of the electromagnet, due to this induction- a switch is activated which allows high current to pass from the battery to the starter motor
If the relay sticks/ takes a lot of current to activate then it must be replaced. Some relays can be opened, cleaned and sealed carefully, replace yours with a new relay and try to open and clean the old relay. Usually it is the mechanical part and not the coil which goes bad.
A relay basically switches high current "ON & OFF" with the help of a relatively small signaling current.
Dimming of the neural switch is normal as starter motor is the only electrical equipment in the bike which draws high current.
Get yourself a suitable heavy gauge wire of 20cm length and a DMM.
Turn on the key, make sure the gear is in neutral and on main stand.
To eliminate the possibility of weak battery, while cranking- use a DMM check the voltage of the battery. At no point of time it should fall below 9 volts(while cranking).
Carefully connect one end of the wire to the +ve terminal of the battery and the other to the +ve terminal of the starter motor (which is covered with a rubber sleeve ) by taking extreme care not to touch the ends of the wire anywhere else (especially unpainted surfaces) . Remove the wire as soon as the test is finished.
If the starter turns as soon as it is powered then the battery and starter are fine.
Now do another test by pressing the starter button, if it takes time then you know that the starter relay is faulty as we have eliminated the possibility of faulty starter in the previous step.
Another way to test the relay is, by powering-up the relay and checking the continuity.
Call me tomorrow for any clarification.Last edited by shoeb2015; 08-02-2013, 10:29 PM.

Re: updates on my extreme
Shoeb: thanks for that info. Could you please enlighten me on the points I have raised in my previous post. I am not sure but I think prior to this issue, while thumbing the starter, the neutral light never went dim. Agreed that the starter motor draws high current, but still. I'm quite confused. Any new xtreme/hunk owners please check and confirm whether the neutral light / the pilot light goes DIM momentarily when your crank the self-start?

Mine also dims slightly for a moment while the self is operated .Originally posted by BloggingWheels View PostI am not sure but I think prior to this issue, while thumbing the starter, the neutral light never went dim. Can you upload a video of the problem you are facing(delay in starting etc...) ?

Re: updates on my extreme
My neutral light too slightly dims on operation of starter.
My front disc pads had worn out heavily and started producing sound.
Changed to ANL pads for Unicorn (asbestos), costed Rs.160 for the pads. Asked for KBX, but was not available.
Bite is less now, hoping it'll improve with time.
Another thing that surprised me was, he showed me pads for Uni from NISSIN, costed only 150/- :O They were wrapped in a transparent polythene cover. I was not sure if it is original.
